Several aviation accidents from the past, such as the Asiana Flight 214 crash at San Francisco International Airport in 2015, have highlighted possible effects of Korean hierarchy culture on the safety of flight. Previous research conducted primarily with the use of surveys revealed that Asian pilots are less likely to report an unsafe condition out of fear that it will damage their relationships with coworkers and superiors. Western pilots see reporting as dealing with the problem and not a person, thus they feel more open to it. This study looked at student pilots’ ability to recognize and deny an unsafe …

Bella figura—beautiful figure—is an idiomatic expression used to reflect every part of Italian life. The phrase appears in travel books and in transnational business guides to describe Italian customs, in sociological research to describe the national characteristics of Italians, and in popular culture to depict thematic constructs and stereotypes, such as the Mafia, romance, and la dolce vita. Scholarly research on bella figura indicates its significance in Italian civilization, yet it remains one of the most elusive concepts to translate. The “ethic of care,” according to Sander-Staudt, is built on the “motivation to care for those who are dependent and vulnerable, and is inspired by both memories of being cared for and the idealizations of self”. Research on teaching behaviors that make a difference to student learning implies that good relationships with students and the ethics of care are important practices of teaching. However, these are not overtly stated, “possibly because the concepts are nebulous and more philosophical than pragmatic”. This chapter focuses on an exploratory study of the language and literacy practices of undergraduate students within our Hispanic-Serving College of Education (HSCOE). HSCOEs must first understand and approach the language and literacy practices of bilingual education preservice teachers from an asset-based perspective. The creation of the Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) designation resulted from decades of advocacy efforts to ensure access to resources and recognition as institutions that served many Latinx students. Texas was at the forefront of efforts to create the HSI designation due to long-term lack of access to quality education, and negative stereotypes about the Latinx population, and an expectation for individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to assimilate into the dominant culture. Given that institutions of higher education achieve the HSI designation based on meeting a predetermined threshold, HSIs are highly diverse and serve a variety of missions. In …

This chapter aims to establish Hispanic-Serving Institution Special Interest Research Group (HSI SIRG) initiative as one way to become consciously skilled at addressing the question of what it means to be an Hispanic-Serving College of Education. While a fundamental component of the SIRG initiative was the need for accountability, the opportunity to provide various kinds of support was equally important. One common issue was overambitious research plans, with SIRGs proposing projects that would realistically take several years to complete. Starratt’s work on ethical leadership, which called for an ethic of care, an ethic of justice, and an ethic of critique as necessary for authentic leadership in PK-12 settings. While essential, she found them insufficient in that they focused on the individual. The Hispanic-Serving College of Education community as a whole includes all our students, faculty, and staff, but people also belong to communities in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) beyond the university. Stories can be a powerful medium through which to simultaneously reinforce and counter oppressive discourse. This article examines Gloria Anzaldúa’s children’s book, Prietita y La Llorona, as a counterstory method within the larger genre of Latinx children’s literature. Counterstories are a powerful method used by Critical Race and feminist theorists to center the delegitimized experiences of marginalized communities. Drawing on theories around discourse, representation, and intersectionality, the article explores the ways in which Anzaldúa counters cultural narratives that diminish community cultural wealth and women’s positions as agents of knowledge through the characters of Doña Lola and La Llorona.

Although service-learning can support the development of intercultural competence, it has also maintained power differentials, reinforced privileged perspectives, and strengthened deficit thinking. Recent research has investigated the conditions within service-learning associated with positive change in diversity-related attitudes. We extend that work, conceptualizing a reciprocal service-learning (RSL) approach that integrates conditions posited by contact theory and the process model of intercultural competence into service-learning’s core features of reflection and reciprocity. In an RSL approach, transformational reciprocity at the participant level supports cultural awareness, interdependence, and parity between participant groups. Caribbean Literature is credited with the purpose of writing an existence for the people of the West Indies, or the Caribbean, with an identity outside of colonialism. The seminal novels by pivotal writers of the Caribbean such as C.L.R. James and George Lamming are groundbreaking texts that engage with the histories of Caribbean colonial subjects. Drawing on contemporary anthropological approaches used by scholars of well-being and medical anthropology (i.e. Michael Jackson and Lisa Stevenson), I explore how indigenous healers in New Zealand blend “traditional” and “modern” elements to establish a creative and inclusive system. Specifically, I explore the use of herbal treatments, ritual chanting, and ceremonies that encapsulate Māori cultural values. I also explore the impact of biomedicine and New-Age wellness approaches on indigenous healing. I argue that Māori healing moves beyond the binary of “tradition” and “modern” as healers merge the past and present and combine the foreign and native. My research is based …
