This critical performance ethnography presents the theory, methodology, and practice surrounding the fieldwork, scripting, and performance of Baton Rouge SLAM!: An Obituary for Summer 2016. As participant-observer, director, and co-performer, I unpack social drama, performance ethnography, and slam culture by employing a lens rooted in critical race theory. Local poets permitted me to de- and re-contextualize their interviews into ensemble scenes and theatricalize their slam poems about the recent summer’s charged events. My research project involves how photography affects Guatemala. Following the Spanish invasion 500 years ago, several issues began to occur in Guatemala. Despite Guatemala being Central Americas’ most industrialized country, several issues were highlighted from the past towards the present. The Antioquia Negra Digital Archive presents diplomatic transcriptions and partially modernized reading versions of colonial–era and nineteenth–century documents related to Africans and those of African descent in the Colombian department of Antioquia. These materials are housed within the Archivo Histórico de Antioquia (Medellín) and the Archivo Histórico Bernardo Martínez Villa (Santa Fe de Antioquia). Led by Dr. Clayton McCarl, the project involves undergraduate students from UNF as primary collaborators. The project examines Pérez Galdós’s views on social regeneration of 19th-century Spain in one of his most acclaimed novels, “Misericordia”, by documenting the wanderings through 19th-century Madrid of the main characters of the novel through geolocation tools. The novel’s main character is a quixotic and self-sacrificing beggar who does not only challenge the cartographic power and the conceptualization of space imposed by a middle class seeking to control urban growth but also reappropriates civic values that had been robbed of all meaning by Spanish society at the time. The project focuses on the personal correspondence and other documents of Eartha M. M. White (1876–1974), the founder of the Clara White Mission and a leader of Jacksonville’s African American community. Participants create, encode using TEI-XML, and edit transcriptions of the items from the collection, connecting them with White’s personal history and the African American history of Jacksonville. There are 70.8 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, cumulating in the largest international humanitarian crisis since the Second World War. The resettlement and integration of these people is a transnational challenge that must be placed at the forefront of the global policy agenda. In Poland, discursive shifts fueled by false, advantageous, political narratives are leading to an unprecedented level of violence and discrimination towards both refugee and immigrant communities. This chapter presents lessons for the English language arts and reading classroom using the Question-Answer Relationships (QAR) strategy with the book Separate Is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez and Her Family's Fight for Desegregation. Both the book and the lessons presented center on historical and contemporary issues surrounding school segregation, desegregation, and resegregation. Thus, the lessons presented in this chapter are also appropriate for the social studies classroom and may be used to address curriculum standards set forth by the National Council for the Social Studies. The Pyramid Lake Reservation is about an hour’s drive northeast of Reno, Ne- vada. As such, it lies close to the major isogloss boundary that separates Oregon Northern Paiute (including Bannock) from Nevada Northern Paiute (Paviotso). The lake, a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan, is home to the endemic Lahontan cutthroat trout, known locally as kuiyui, and is a popular fishery.

Wuzzie George (b. ~1880, d. December 20, 1984) was, by all accounts, a true keeper of traditional knowledge. Over the course of more than three decades, she provided detailed ethnographic information about her people, the Toidɨkadɨ (Cattail-Eaters), for ethnographer Margaret Wheat (1967) and anthropologist and historical linguist Catherine S. Fowler (1992). Wuzzie also had an ongoing working relationship with the intrepid folklorist Sven Liljeblad, as evidenced by this prayer, which she composed for him in Fallon, Nevada, during a time of illness.

This volume of Northern Paiute texts is the result of continued collaborative relationships between members of several Northern Paiute (Western Numic; Uto-Aztecan) speech communities and two linguists who have nearly 30 years of combined experience working on the language. The resulting documentary resource provides varied samples of naturally occurring speech—narratives recorded and analyzed by the editors as part of their own fieldwork as well as materials recorded of earlier generations of speakers. With a shared history of British colonialism, India and South Africa are two countries with levels of ethnic and linguistic diversity that have contributed to previous and ongoing language policy issues. Though each country has enacted policies in attempts to combat language difficulties, many of these policies have been largely regarded as ineffective, as they have either not been properly upheld or received repeated pushback from citizens.
