Guy Boothby’s Pharos the Egyptian, published in 1889, employs the category of the Gothic to discuss various anxieties plaguing the late Victorian society. It deals with issues such as the Gothic Other’s ‘magical’ capabilities, revenge, disease, and the colonial extraction of wealth, among others. The novel overwhelms the binary between the rational European self and the Gothic colonial other by presenting the Egyptian Pharos not as an opposite but as an excess of the European self. Pharos is as rational as he is Gothic and in this excess of being both, he destabilizes the hierarchy and binary at once. …

This research thesis project focuses on the benefits of legal professionals being bilingual and my support of utilizing bilingual legal professionals over language translators. This focuses on the communities they support, including their clients, other legal professionals, and all American citizens. There are analyses of language used in English-speaking and Spanish-speaking legal systems, as well as previous bilingual integration attempts. As a pre-law student that speaks both Spanish and Portuguese, I want to know how to advocate for myself as a future attorney and how to advocate for future clients who will need the assistance of a bilingual legal professional. …

El presente ensayo examina el discurso del narrador en el cuento “El niño proletario” de Osvaldo Lamborghini como una reflexión ideológica sobre la complicidad entre literatura y violencia. Mediante la inspección del estilo lingüístico del narrador asesino, este trabajo propone que el cuento de Lamborghini presenta la escritura como una forma de expresión vinculada a la violencia y acusa a la tradición literaria hispanoamericana, específicamente al naturalismo y al modernismo, de participar en la violencia social que el relato denuncia. In this essay, we address Boyle’s A Friend of the Earth (2000) and Atwood’s Oryx and Crake (2003) as climate fiction that plays out equally devastating yet realistic futuristic scenarios. In creative thought experiments, science fiction helps us to recognize humans as a collective force, a force that conquers, shapes, destroys, and rebuilds the planet in pre- and post-apocalyptic bouts not unlike the pre- and post-pandemic times we are now experiencing. Our focus on these two science fiction novels is on the intersectionality of emergent environments, extinctions, and diseases within the framework of climate change.

Abstract: In Goethe's works, plants abound; as such, they offer many insights for this critical plant studies project on plants and humans in the early Anthropocene. From Werther and die Novelle to Hermann und Dorothea, Faust and his scientific writings, we find three categories of plant depictions: first as embodiments of green vitality that elicit emotional responses; second, as humanly-shaped cultivations or horticultural realms; and third, we find inklings of the promise of actual vegetal agency establishing the very world in which we human beings and all other animals live. This thesis applies the glocalization theory to a comparative study of the Disney theme parks in the United States and Shanghai, China. It argues that Walt Disney’s glocalization through integrating Chinese culture into the Shanghai Disney theme park brought commercial success to the company. In the last decade, the feminist and LGBTQ+ movements have shown the challenges transgender people face in different countries of the world. Specifically, Brazil and Argentina have proposed different regulations and laws that protect these individuals from violence and that intend to incorporate them into the job market. Fictional representations of the female concierge frequently underscore her negative attributes, above all her meddlesome discourse. The female concierge character in Georges Simenon's 1933 novel, Les fiançailles de M. Hire, however, provides an exception to the rule as local law authorities give credence to her word and base their investigation on her testimony. However, in two filmic adaptations of the novel—Duvivier's Panique (1946) and Patrice Leconte's Monsieur Hire (1989)—the female concierge character is practically absent. This article demonstrates how, from page to screen, the concierge's role is dissected, disembodied, and displaced in Duvivier's and Leconte's films, and finally reflects …

This essay examines the De Subventione Pauperum treatise (On Assistance to the Poor, 1526) by the humanist Juan Luis Vives as a humanitarian narrative of early modernity. Contradictorily, the plan to help the indigent population presents a derogatory view of poverty that reflects the inconsistencies of the civilizing project of Renaissance Christian humanism and reveals the biopolitics of the nascent modern state and humanitarian imperial reasoning.
