This piece is a celebration, an interpretation, and translation of Lao words and of the Lao language as poetry. This poem dissects and discuss the differences between how the word "understand" is conceptualized and embodied in the Lao language versus English. Further, it shows how in Lao, there are even deeper nuances between what it means "to know" versus "to understand" in Lao.

This study seeks to contribute to a gap in our understanding of retranslations through a case study, specifically one that focuses on Domingo Faustino Sarmiento’s Facundo. This book, widely held to be a Latin American literary classic and cultural touchstone, took shape in the late nineteenth century. It was translated from the Spanish into English by Mary Peabody Mann in 1868 and Kathleen Ross in 2003, providing a rare instance of a retranslated work of Latin American thought. The present study will specifically focus on two aspects of retranslation: production and reception. It will consider production by focusing on the …

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อจัดทำประมวลศัพท์เรื่องกาแฟพิเศษ โดยรวบรวมคำศัพท์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับกระบวนการแปรรูปกาแฟ การคั่วกาแฟ การบดกาแฟ การชงกาแฟ ตลอดจนการประเมินคุณภาพกาแฟ จุดมุ่งหมายหลักคือเพื่อศึกษาทฤษฎีทางศัพทวิทยาที่เกี่ยวข้อง รวมถึงระเบียบวิธีและกระบวนการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ พร้อมทั้งจัดทำประมวลศัพท์เรื่องกาแฟพิเศษอย่างเป็นระบบ เพื่อให้ผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องในศาสตร์กาแฟพิเศษ รวมถึงผู้ที่ทำงานด้านกาแฟ นักแปล ล่าม และผู้สนใจสามารถนำประมวลศัพท์นี้ไปใช้เพื่อการอ้างอิงได้ในการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์นี้ อาศัยการศึกษาและนำทฤษฎีทางศัพทวิทยาและแนวทางการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ของนักศัพทวิทยาหลายท่านมาปรับใช้ โดยกระบวนการทำงานแบ่งออกเป็น 5 ขั้นตอนสำคัญ ได้แก่ (1) การกำหนดหัวข้อ ขอบเขตของการวิจัย กลุ่มเป้าหมาย และวัตถุประสงค์ในการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ (2) การศึกษาทฤษฎีและระเบียบวิธีในการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ (3) การรวบรวมและศึกษาข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับกาแฟพิเศษเพื่อนำมาจัดทำคลังข้อมูลภาษาและคัดศัพท์จากคลังข้อมูลภาษา (4) การกำหนดมโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์ระหว่างศัพท์ที่คัดเลือก และ (5) การจัดทำบันทึกข้อมูลศัพท์เบื้องต้นและบันทึกข้อมูลศัพท์เพื่อนำเสนอศัพท์เทียบเคียงในภาษาไทยผลลัพธ์ของงานวิจัยนี้คือ ประมวลศัพท์เรื่องกาแฟพิเศษซึ่งประกอบด้วยศัพท์ทั้งหมด 37 คำ โดยนำเสนอเป็นกลุ่มมโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์และลำดับของมโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์ โดยการนำเสนอแต่ละศัพท์ประกอบด้วยศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษ ศัพท์เทียบเคียงในภาษาไทย คำนิยาม ประเภททางไวยากรณ์ หมวดหมู่ บริบทอ้างอิงที่พบศัพท์ดังกล่าว มโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์พร้อมประเภทของความสัมพันธ์ รูปทางภาษาอื่นของศัพท์และข้อมูลอ้างอิง เพื่อให้เห็นลักษณะและความสัมพันธ์ ตลอดจนรูปแบบการใช้ของศัพท์ดังกล่าวอย่างชัดเจน อันเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการใช้ศัพท์เฉพาะในเชิงวิชาการและการสื่อสารในแวดวงได้อย่างถูกต้อง

Round's new book follows in a line of intellectual enquiries over the last 20 years, including Hilary Wyss’ Writing Indians (2003), Lisa Brooks’ The Common Pot (2008), my own Red Ink (2012), and Round's previous monograph, Removable Type (2010), that delve into the nature of the written word and how it worked within the context of settler colonialism to transform Indigenous lives on the North American continent. As established by these previous works of scholarship, western literacy was not the miraculous portal into civilization that settler colonial agents often purported it to be. Lost In Translation: The Absence Of Untranslatable Words In The English Classroom, Ashley Boledovic

This qualitative study explores the impact of lexical gaps and untranslatable words on self-expression and communication in English-speaking classrooms. Seven interviews were conducted with bilingual or non-native English speakers representing a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including Arabic, Portuguese, Marathi, Hindi, Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese. Each interview investigated how language impacts self-expression, or the ability to communicate thoughts, emotions, and identity within the classroom. The findings suggest that untranslatable words and cultural concepts from participants’ native languages offer insights into cultural perspectives, which are often undervalued and not represented in English-speaking classrooms. This thesis is a documentation of the Oral History of the commemoration of Muharram and celebration of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (ﷺ) within the Memon community residing in Karachi. The thesis traces a shift in scale from Muharram commemorations to Eid Milad-un-Nabi (ﷺ) celebrations. Using seven oral-history interviews from Kharadar and Hussainabad, it reconstructs the rituals affiliated with Muharram and Rabi-ul-Awal and analyses their meanings through hermeneutic phenomenology. It then analyzes transformation via Van Manen’s four lifeworld existentials: spatiality, corporeality, temporality and relationality. This thesis explores the entangled relationship between language, memory, and technology through the lens of immigrant experience. Moving from programming to visual storytelling, I investigate how dyslexia, bilingualism, and cultural displacement have shaped my ways of reading, writing, and coding.

Beginning with personal reflections on switching from computer science to art, I trace how code offered a form of clarity and expression where written language had once failed me. Yet as I ventured into real-time simulation and XR storytelling, I encountered new forms of mistranslation—where narratives dissolved, mutated, or resisted coherence altogether.

Words And Stardom: Modernist Poetic Responses To Asta Nielsen, Karl E. Toepfer

This essay discusses how four modernist poets portrayed the Danish movie star Asta Nilesen (1881-1972). German Hans Schiebelhuth (1895-1944) describes the "demonic" power of Nielsen's image to awaken dark aspects of his adolscent personality. For the Flemish poet Paul van Ostaijen (1896-1928), Nielsen's cinematic image provokes a radical shattering of language into extravagant "word-images." Danish writer Rudolf Broby-Johansen (1900-1987) linked Nielsen's image to a radical (Marxist) critique of oppressive sexual politics within a capitalist society. German Franz Behrens (1895-1977) composed a lengthy, expressionist ode to Nielsen from the perspective of one who actually worked as a screenwriter in the German …

A study was done to examine the explicitation and compression strategies used by interpreters working from American Sign Language (ASL) into spoken English. To date, most research has focused only on their work from English into ASL. A review of the literature identified several expansion and compression strategies that interpreters and translators utilize, and these served as a model of coding the data and for triangulation. The methodology for this study was qualitative and descriptive. Twenty-two interpreters volunteered to simultaneously interpret four ASL recorded texts into spoken English, for a total of 88 target texts. The researchers identified 9 expansions …

This article examines the concept of schizophrenia as a cultural metaphor in order to analyze the Hindu Right’s contradictory language-framing politics within the public domain, particularly in relation to building mega dams on rivers Narmada and Bhagirathi. Conversationalists and critics alike continue to take delight in Tom Bombadil, yet remain perplexed by his enduring enigma. Interpretive positioning appears to be determined by the semantics of the term enigma deployed and how it intersects with any of the several textual standpoints adopted. The primary contention of this article is that the enigma is intentionally both a riddle (noun) and a riddling (verb). Reading the enigma through literary features of the Old English riddle-song can yield an alternate interpretation of Tom Bombadil that has received scant attention in critical commentary. Semantic change refers to the process by which words acquire new meanings over time or in different contexts, particularly as they transition between disciplines. This shift in meaning, especially when words are adopted as terms in multiple academic areas, often leads to confusion and ambiguity. This study focuses on the terms "agent" and "ontology," tracing their semantic evolution over time and across disciplines to understand how their meanings differ between fields such as philosophy, law, and artificial intelligence. Drawing on insights from Boon and Van Baalen's metacognitive framework, the analysis demonstrates how understanding these differences can help prevent miscommunication.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the state of Ohio speak a language other than English, and communication in a predominantly English-speaking state can prove not only cumbersome, but dangerous as well. Patients who have difficulties communicating with their healthcare providers experience higher rates of medical error, adverse medical reactions because of improper drug use, longer hospital stays, and more hospital readmissions than the general population. Additionally, they experience high rates of anxiety and frustration when receiving medical care, which causes resentment and mistrust of the healthcare system.
