Tradition Innovations in Arts, Design, and Media Higher Education

Today’s AI systems are not built to have reciprocal interplay with their environments and thus they demonstrate little interest in emergence, adaptation or developing mutually productive relationships with the natural world. Is a different kind of AI possible? How can artists contribute to its development? In this essay, I will discuss ways in which the arts might help guide us towards a new kind of AI, built upon adaptive conversation (i.e. shared construction of meaning) with nature. This thesis explores my artistic journey of creating work that centers on personal identity and the complexities of history and representation. Through research and creative practice, I have moved away from making art for an external viewer, turning to a deeper internal exploration of my lived experiences. Focusing on the color indigo as a personal and historical symbol, I challenge conventional portrayals of race in art, particularly those rooted in Western ideals. I created this drawing for my Drawing I class, where I was introduced to the cross-hatching method. Through this technique, I aimed to physicalize emotion through the beauty and expressiveness of the human hand. The title, A Handful, represents not only the literal handful of hands shown, but also the handful of emotions and experiences behind each one.

In this art lesson for upper elementary students, we study the art of Jeffrey Gibson from the Zuckerman Museum of Art exhibition Jeffrey Gibson: They Teach Love, from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundations and analyze his contemporary post-modern artistic contributions alongside contemporary traditional Native American bead weaving and historical Native American bead weaving. We consider how to make visual patterns from aspects of our cultural identity and how how to make a bead weaving art project in the elementary art classroom. This lesson plan pairs Georgia Visual Art standards with third grade Social Studies standards.

Susan Loesl is an art therapist and art educator with over 40 years of experience. A potential 17^th century Anglo-Dutch military portrait painting from the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York arrived at the Garman Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State University for conservation research and treatment in 2022. The painting’s title, date, and artist were unknown and the subject was initially referred to as a “17^th Century Dutch Cavalier.” Little information existed on the provenance and history of the artwork. The painting was in a state of structural instability and aesthetic disfigurement and showed evidence of a past restoration campaign. This master’s project attempted to broadly …

I loved writing since I was 12. I learned putting words on paper solidifies the human experience, whether it be through poetry, music, stories, or simply free-writing one's thoughts. Attending medical school has broadened my experience with other realities to an unexpected degree.
