Shimmer: Introducing And Workshopping A New Methodology For Practice-Led Research, Lola Montgomery

This presentation examines a new methodological approach by introducing shimmer as an embodied epistemological state that frequently appears within creative-practice research but is rarely named, scaffolded, or assessed. Emerging at the intersection of feminist philosophy, phenomenology, affect theory, reflective practice, and practice-led research, shimmer describes the moment when insight coheres somatically before it can be articulated conceptually. Rather than positioning intuition as unrigorous or accidental, shimmer reframes embodied emergence as a legitimate site of knowledge production. In the action-packed, visually-oriented market for modern media, some may assume a 2,400-year-old Greek tragedy to be slightly past its expiration date, especially if it features little to no action onstage like in Euripides’ The Trojan Women. However, it is important to remember that literature is lost when the world fails to cherish it, so if a text survives that long, it may be worth another cursory glance. Something in his youth must have sparked an interest in the arts because he earned a bachelor and master of fine arts, both with an emphasis on painting and printmaking. His bachelor’s was from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and his master’s was from the Rochester Institute of Technology. After graduation, he embarked on a 26-year career as an independent studio quilt designer and maker. At the end of the interview, Boakye explains what he wants for Kwasi Paul in the future, both in the Bronx and in the fashion industry. For the Bronx, he wants it to represent Ghanaian fashion, something Ghanaians in the Bronx can be proud of. The lyrics are GPT, Claude and Google Translate versions of Richard Rolle’s The Fire of Love, rendered into liturgical Latin, Russian and Spanish, along with elements of canonical Mass lyrics. This dissertation addresses gaps in understandings of looking in research and practice by creating and defining sociolooking. Sociolooking is a theory of looking together and choreographing looking experiences. Researchers, educators, and practitioners across many fields value close looking and have offered step-by-step strategies for facilitating looking. While these strategies and related research are instrumental in understanding discrete aspects of looking and learning to look, they do not fully acknowledge or explore the underlying social and dynamic ways people engage in looking in everyday situations.
