Getting Graphic: Depictions Of Single Stories In Non-Fiction Graphic Novels About Israelis And Palestinians, Matt Reingold 2020 TanenbaumCHAT

Getting Graphic: Depictions Of Single Stories In Non-Fiction Graphic Novels About Israelis And Palestinians, Matt Reingold

Peace and Conflict Studies

Six recent non-fiction graphic novels about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict are analyzed in order to understand how narratives are constructed and presented about each community. What emerges when considered together is that while complex narratives that challenge hegemonic stereotypes are depicted about the community that the authors favour, their depiction of 'the other' often relies on either stereotypes or omissions and these depictions present single stories of entire communities. I argue how the inclusion of alternative narratives within graphic novels can enhance the text, provide opportunities for readers to gain deeper knowledge about the conflict, and begin to appreciate and recognize …

I Hear You Now, I See You Then, Quinn Hunter 2020 Ohio University

I Hear You Now, I See You Then, Quinn Hunter

Art + Design Masters Theses

In the research driven project I Hear You Now, I See You Then, I refer to the contemporary and historical erasure of the labor of African American women using research gathered from the southern plantation economy to create an art installation. The objects in this installation are primarily made with artificial hair integrations and utilizing labor intensive methods that are similar to those used to install the hair on the Black body. The objects I make reference the luxury items in the domestic spaces of historic plantation sites that have been re-branded to be used in the wedding /tourism industry. …

An Exploration Of Provenance And Ownership History And The Critique Of Curatorial Practice., Sacra J. Fallen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the art world, the artwork is under evaluation to determine its worth from its historic value to its monetary value. One of the primary strategies used to evaluate the artwork is the work's provenance which can be broken down into the work's collector history and the authenticity of its authorship. The first question to be addressed is: does knowing an artwork's collector history and provenance add to its historic value? The second question to be addressed is: does knowing an artwork's collector history and provenance add to its monetary value? These questions will be supported by two case studies …

Paper Making: Finding The Scaffold, Tino Ward 2020 Southern Methodist University

Paper Making: Finding The Scaffold, Tino Ward

Art Theses and Dissertations

Paper making combines my proclivity towards using found materials and the need to produce my own painting supports. This first part of this thesis chronicles the reasons I arrived at paper as my chosen medium, the objects I began to produce, and the projects that stemmed from those early experiments. The second half outlines my final work, a 1:4 scale model in paper of the 1966 exhibition 10, held in New York at the Dwan Gallery, which showcased the early minimal works of Carl Andre, Jo Baer, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, Robert Morris, Ad Reinhardt, …

"A Place For Us", Dillon M. Bryant 2020 University of South Dakota

"A Place For Us", Dillon M. Bryant

Honors Thesis

“A place for us” explores constructions of the home in relation to the LGBT+ experience through reappropriated and recontextualized found images sourced from articles of print culture such as newspapers, advertisements, publications such as Better Homes and Gardens, National Geographic, Time and others printed from the 1960’s onward. As of 2020, there are no federal laws that provide universal protections against housing or employment discrimination faced by LGBT+ people in the United States. LGBT+ youth and elders struggle with securing housing and this is compounded for LGBT+ people of color. Homelessness increases exposure to trauma, drug abuse, developmental …

Virtual Yearning, Isa Sabraw 2020 Washington University in St. Louis

Virtual Yearning, Isa Sabraw

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

Do you feel who you are? The answer to the question is pursued but not captured.

The pursuit consists of a rowdy but skilled team of investigatory video works. The videos possess research, evidence, beauty, wit, and a healthy dose of humor.

The research is made up of books, films, and archives. The evidence is pilfered from the internet. The beauty is much the same. The wit is something you are born with. The humor is hiding something: sincerity.

Patterning A Home, Zoë Finkelstein 2020 Washington University in St. Louis

Patterning A Home, Zoë Finkelstein

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

The question driving my constant impulse to create is this: how do the places in which we spend our time transform the four walls around us into this larger entity we call “home?” I begin to answer this question with an investigation into the use of repetition, time spent, and memory in my own body of work. In order for a space to become a home, one must build up a collection of experiences in that space over time. To show this, I explore the relationship in my work between repetitive mark making, pattern, intense labor, memory, comfort, and my …

Reclaiming Images Of Black Women: An Investigation Of Black Womanhood In Visual Communication, Taylor Simone Thomas

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

This thesis investigates how Black womanhood has been visually represented in hopes to either recognize Black women as full, nuanced, and legitimate participants of society or to reinforce monolithic representations built from the constructs of social, political, and economic oppression. It also gives an analysis of Black feminism and how Black feminist thought can be applied to the creative process in hopes of challenging visual misrepresentations of Black womanhood. The aim of this thesis is to show that artists and visual communicators do have a responsibility to be conscious of the messages conveyed in their work. In addition, they must …

Alfred Hitchcock As A Cinematic Architect Of Suspense, Hannah Both 2020 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Alfred Hitchcock As A Cinematic Architect Of Suspense, Hannah Both

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

Film has the ability to evoke powerful emotional reactions from its audience through the emotional atmosphere it creates. This almost intangible quality is difficult to quantitatively describe. Architecture, to the learned few, has a similar ability to evoke emotional reactions to the spatial atmosphere it creates. Broadly, the goal of this research is to investigate the emotional influence of suspense in cinematic space and how it might quantitatively be described through a series of definable principals or space making strategies evident through an analysis of Rear Window. The medium of film allows space to be released from the physical …

A Lesson In Art: Understanding And Questioning Distraction, Play, And Human Nature, Joshua L. Newbend 2020 Columbus State University

A Lesson In Art: Understanding And Questioning Distraction, Play, And Human Nature, Joshua L. Newbend

Theses and Dissertations

In making artwork using stuffed animals and video performance, I have been able to construct visual means of questioning society and its focus on interaction in nature and adolescence and adulthood. The videos in the body of artwork seek for the viewer to question the repetitive, distracting, and anxiety-inducing notions within the artwork. From Dadaism to artists like Bruce Nauman and Mike Kelley, the art world has changed and grown from times of crisis and absurdity. This set of artworks not only fits within this area of the art world, but also seeks to expand it into a contemporary light …

Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez: The Casta Paintings, Jonathan Orozco 2020 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez: The Casta Paintings, Jonathan Orozco

Student Work

Colombian-born Lincoln-based artist Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez has grounded her recent art production within a wide art historical and Pan-American discourse. This interdisciplinary and interethnic practice is particularly exemplified in Chapter 6: Casta Paintings, a series of work within her “visual novel”, started after a significant move from New York City to Lincoln. This paper intends to describe and analyze her casta painting works in detail, from their intellectual inception to the minutiae of the work’s creation, providing a context in which a reader can understand the historical and artistic significance of her works within two methodological approaches; critical-race theory and postcolonialism. …

Requisitioned: American War Art Of The Second World War, Spenser Carroll-Johnson 2020 Chapman University

Requisitioned: American War Art Of The Second World War, Spenser Carroll-Johnson

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

The United States requisitioned artists to assist with military objectives and servicemen requisitioned art as a form of rhetoric. This research reexamines the role of “official artists” and thereby extends its definition to include the multitude of art they produced during the Second World War. The underpinnings of this thesis reside during the economic crises of the 1930s that brought about American emergency relief initiatives for artists under the direction of Holger Cahill and, by extension, Edward Bruce. For the first time in history, the American public engaged with state-sponsored art. Due to a symbiotic relationship that formed between the …
