Art In The Data-City: Critical Data Art In The Age Of Surveillance Capitalism, Conor McGarrigle 2021 Technological University Dublin

Art In The Data-City: Critical Data Art In The Age Of Surveillance Capitalism, Conor Mcgarrigle

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter considers the role of digital art practice, with an emphasis on the Irish context, in what is described as the data-city, that is a theorisation of this contemporary urban condition so infused with opaque data-driven systems that almost every action is described by and enacted through data. The ubiquitous deployment and action of data assemblages – the networks of hardware and software that enable data-capture regimes – in urban space are changing the nature of the city itself in ways that are not readily apparent. Critical data art practices it is suggested, provide a method to highlight and …

Critically Imagining A Decolonised Vision In Australian Poetry, Cassandra Julie O'Loughlin

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

Postmodern ecocriticism, given its broad range of perspectives, offers an agreeable platform for articulating a new, advanced and inclusive framework for a decolonising theorisation of literature and the environment. This article seeks to identify Australian Western decolonising poetry that sits in harmony with Indigenous aural and literary versions of communicative engagement with Country. The concept of human embeddedness in ecological relationships and biological processes as part of a complex matrix of interdependent things is embraced. In particular this article focuses on inclusivity and interconnectedness of all life forms to illustrate aesthetic and conceptual interfaces between Aboriginal Australia and Western poetics. …

Ivan Puni's Berlin Period: 1920-1924, Elena Kakuriev 2021 CUNY Hunter College

Ivan Puni's Berlin Period: 1920-1924, Elena Kakuriev

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is dedicated to the work of the Russian Avant-Garde artist Ivan Albertovich Puni (1892-1956): an artist, a theorist and writer, an organizer of exhibition, a teacher of art, and above all, an innovator. This thesis presents an account of the artist's Berlin period (1920-1924), which has so far lacked scholarly attention.

The thesis begins with a close analysis of Puni's Russian period (1914-1919). In this time span,

Ivan Puni demonstrated his ability to adopt a wide gamut of diverse artistic styles. Puni first elaborated works akin to Cubist constructions. However, starting from 1915, the artist became a major …

Collective Memory And Arab Jewish Identity, Maya Yadid 2021 CUNY Hunter College

Collective Memory And Arab Jewish Identity, Maya Yadid

Theses and Dissertations

Within this paper I will explore my Arab-Jewish identity by confronting the historical development of that term. I will look at the ways in which collective memory and photography are utilized to construct images used as colonizing tools to assimilate Arab-Jews into Israel and Palestine after 1948 as part of Zionist Ideology. In an effort to explore productive forms of collective memory, I will investigate the way food and hospitality are used as a vehicle to strengthen this cultural diaspora. I will conclude by discussing my thesis installation in which the gallery is activated by food preparation and consumption, ceramic …

Geometric Times, Linguistic Spaces, Johanna Strobel 2021 CUNY Hunter College

Geometric Times, Linguistic Spaces, Johanna Strobel

Theses and Dissertations

If the loop is the trademark of our times and truthiness the reversal of the uncanny, what is the correlation between logic and information? This writing investigates the role of repetition and motifs in the production of meaning, how kitsch and neutrality function as modes of signifiers and how authenticity relates to the banal.

Color And Composition: Twelve Letters To Val Hall, Johannes H. Von Gumppenberg, Janet Von Gumppenberg

Johannes von Gumppenberg Books

From 2008 through 2013 Johannes led an extracurricular seminar in the Circle of Scholars at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. As usual, every year and for every presentation he prepared full teaching notes and copious slides and handouts. In the middle years, from 2010 through 2013, he started these Letters underlying the seminars: "As I thought about my own work as an artist and my eyesight weakened, I ventured to write down my understanding of Visual Art, and decided to write the essays as personal letters to my fellow artist."

Johannes often said this would provide the needed …

The Last Prisoners Of War: How Nazi-Looted Art Is Displayed In U.S. Museums, Monica May Thompson

Geifman Prize in Holocaust Studies

How art museums approach NLA is important today because much of the public relies on museums for their education. NLA cases are especially controversial because they are not only legal battles, but ethical ones so museums have to be extra careful approaching them. Even if the museum has won the legal battle the public may not see them as winning the ethical one therefore they might want to avoid displaying this information to the public. However, as we can see with the previous websites, it actually looks worse for museums not to be open and honest about their NLA pieces …
