Fashioning The Flapper: Clothing As A Catalyst For Social Change In 1920s America, Julia Wolffe 2022 Rollins College

Fashioning The Flapper: Clothing As A Catalyst For Social Change In 1920s America, Julia Wolffe

Honors Program Theses

Fashion has been a catalyst for social change throughout human history. Fashion in 1920s America in particular reflects society's rapidly evolving attitudes towards gender and race. Beginning with how corsetry heavily restricted women for nearly four hundred years up until the twentieth century, this thesis explores how clothing has acted as a tool for societal progression following World War I and Women's Suffrage and during the Jazz Age and The Harlem Renaissance. Specifically, this thesis examines how the influence of jazz music and dance that originated from Black American communities led to the creation of the flapper evening dress. The …

Augmented Reality: The Challenges And Opportunities Of This New Medium, Zijun Liang

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Augmented reality is a technology that pushes the boundaries of media art and cyber security, expanding the potential and challenges of each. By combining computer graphics and realistic visuals, a new medium category was created that increased the classic realistic experiences. Traditional realistic sensations are the ordinary senses humans use to respond to incoming information, such as seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling—this viewpoint is based on a combination of visual anthropology and media theory.

It is vital for a media artist and software developer to understand how immersive technologies can improve the production and presentation of relevant content in interactive …

A Dancer's Image, Sydney Baker 2022 Central Washington University

A Dancer's Image, Sydney Baker

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Dancers are amazingly dedicated athletes who train for hours a day to try and perfect their craft. In doing so, they can become hyper focused on the details, picking apart every aspect of themselves and their technique. With so much time spent training, it can be difficult to take a step back and analyze the role the mirror plays in a dancer’s training and everyday life. There are many factors that can affect a dancer's body image, including the social environment between educators and peers, social standards and social media, dance clothing, and so much more. This report and creative …

Objectified: Forced Marriages And Bitter Reality Of Violence Against Women In India, Anurag Wallace 2022 Virginia Commonwealth University

Objectified: Forced Marriages And Bitter Reality Of Violence Against Women In India, Anurag Wallace

Theses and Dissertations

Domestic violence against women is an ongoing problem in India. With cases rising ever higher, the time has come to talk openly about the uncomfortable truths behind arranged marriages, which foster injustice and often lead to violence against women. The wedding dress is a symbol of purity in traditional Indian weddings, but in the case of marriages that turn abusive, it can become a symbol of oppression and patriarchy. During the research phase of this investigation, women once stuck in abusive marriages—treated as objects—talked about the objects that made them feel trapped and explained how these everyday objects became silent …
