BRIGGS B.A., Romance Languages and Literature, Boston University, 1964 M.A., Spanish, The University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, 2002 Ph.D., Spanish and Portuguese, The University of New Mexico, 2009 ABSTRACT Spanish poet Rafael Alberti of the Generation of 27 claimed that 'Surrealism had been practiced in Spain since time immemorial as part of the tradition of popular song and folk poetry' (Rafael Alberti qtd. in Harris 34). Valkyrie-A Film Review, Barry Maxfield
Swiss American Historical Society Review
It is uncommon for a historical fact to be so compelling that Hollywood would make a movie of it. It seems fictionalized history i~ the product that sells, with Saving Private Ryan being one such example it was a blending of fact and fiction into a blockbuster seller. Histor~ has accounts which are riveting yet overlooked. However, for writer Christopher McQuarrie and Na than Alexander one of those stories camt to light, a story that could be put on celluloid and sold.

Golo Mann: A Literary Historian, Axel Fair-Schulz
Swiss American Historical Society Review
T he German Postal system honored the 100th anniversary of Golo Mann's birth in 2009 with a new stamp, which displayed his face with the caption Literarischer Historiker, meaning literary historian. This apt description captures much about the essence of his thinking and work as a historian, as he was a uniquely gifted writer and thus bridged the gap between scholarly historical research and thoughtfully composed literature. In addition to Germany, Switzerland also lays claim to Golo Mann , as he had lived there for many years after returning from American :xile, when Nazi Germany was finally defeated by the …

The Battle Of Murten, Albert Winkler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Frequent warfare was a harsh political reality in central Europe in the late Middle Ages as ambitious states tried to extend their power and influence by attacking and subjugating other territories. As a result of this frequent aggression, success on the battlefield was necessary for the survival and independence of many nations and peoples, including the Swiss Confederation. The most critical threat to the existence of the Swiss alliance in the fifteenth century was the invasion in1476 by Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, one of the most powerful rulers in Europe. In two stunning victories, Granson (Grandson in German), …

Sexuality And Human Rights (Fall 2010), Robert D. Tobin
Syllabi
What happens when we think of sexuality, with all of its transgressive and individualistic energies, in terms of rationally established universal human rights? Literary texts that focus on individual cases in the context of larger cultural and social traditions with a particular attention to the power of language can help us sort through some of the complex ideas that emerge from a discussion of sexual rights. In this class, we will focus on controversial issues--like sadism, masochism, male homosexuality, lesbianism, age of consent, prostitution, polygamy and transsexuality—that bring rights conflicts to the forefront.

The National Imagination (Spring 2010), Robert D. Tobin, Belen Atienza, Alice Valentine
Syllabi
What images make people think of the United States of America? Cowboys? The flag? And are there similar icons in other cultures that help define cultural identity? The National Imagination explores the concept of a national community as constructed and critiqued through literary and cinematic narratives, as well as other cultural texts.
Our underlying premise is that national languages and cultures promote the identity of particular communities. We are interested in examining those subjective expressions of culture—images, symbols, narratives—that lead people to feel that they are members of the communities we call nations. We are also interested in discovering points …
The Cultural Memory Of German Victimhood In Post-1990 Popular German Literature And Television, 2010 Wayne State University
The Cultural Memory Of German Victimhood In Post-1990 Popular German Literature And Television, Pauline Ebert
Wayne State University Dissertations
My dissertation analyzes the representation of Germans as victims of the Third Reich and the Second World War in post-1990 German memory. After unification, there no longer were two states that could each blame the other as the heir of National Socialism and this past had to be renegotiated. The claim that many Germans had been victims became central as evidenced by the vast number of popular literature, commercial cinema and television programs of this subject. I argue with Wulf Kansteiner (2006) that to understand collective memory, we should explore mass media representations. As the majority of highbrow artifacts do …
