Mapping For Accountability: Decolonizing Land Acknowledgment Initiatives, Salma Monani, Sarah E. Gilsoul

What does it mean to map Indigenous presence onto lands that have been appropriated by settler colonial nation states? This chapter examines the challenges and potentials of re-inscribing Indigenous land relations through a digital mapping project, Indigenous Pennsylvania: Past, Present and Future. Situating itself within the growing scholarship of Indigenous cartographies, the chapter presents Indigenous Pennsylvania as an example of d-ecomedia, a shorthand we offer for ecomedia projects that foreground decolonial methodologies. Such methodologies prompt us to attend to a storied sense of Indigenous place-based relations through attention to Indigenous spatial and temporal modes of mediation.

Comments on sports news published on the digital platforms of newspapers have turned these spaces into forums for debate in which homogeneous social communities are established. At Bucknell University and Gettysburg College, an increasing focus on supporting creative undergraduate research as intensive, high-impact experiences has resulted in both institutions implementing library-led digital scholarship fellowships for their students. Gettysburg’s Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship began in 2016, and Bucknell’s Digital Scholarship Summer Research Fellowship in 2017. While academic libraries have emerged as leaders on college campuses for digital humanities (DH) services, the programs at Gettysburg and Bucknell are distinctive in their structured curricula, a focus on independent student research, and the development of a local community of practice. Archival research and reading from the archives have long been embraced as a scholarly research practice in humanities disciplines. While scholars may spend weeks or months poring over hidden treasures found in archives, undergraduate students are often not exposed to these materials in a hands-on way. However, college and university libraries often have archival collections tucked away that can facilitate learning when used in thoughtfully crafted assignments. This research is an experiment in perspective. Using the four commonplaces (Schwab, 1978), I practiced letting the Savannah River teach me what there is to know about the water, the land, the people, and the other entities that depend on ki through artistic, ethnographic, and ecopedagogical lenses. The ethnographic findings describe the social actors that depend on ki and give a voice to the River. The a/r/tographic findings display the River on a canvas map through two hundred years using paint, clay, photography, video, abstract acrylics, and fabric. Since its release, ChatGPT, a chatbot specialized in writing content and answering questions in response to user prompts, has posed an unclear threat to liberal arts institutions. Can it serve as an effective tool for cheating? Can its responses replace work done in the liberal arts? This thesis argues that ChatGPT’s limitations—particularly its inability to think critically—prevent it from replacing real liberal arts work, which involves questioning, critique, and re-examination. If anything, this thesis suggests, ChatGPT can push liberal arts institutions to better promote critical thinking by serving as a litmus test for liberal arts-level work.

Rhetorical discourse has long been characterized by patriarchal systems, and this reality has persisted in online spaces. How might today’s scholar dissect and better understand the nature of online communities, specifically those that engage in women’s rights discourses? I argue that using Thomas Farrell’s notion of “rhetorical forum”, James P. Zappen’s outline for digital rhetorical theory, and Sonja K. Foss and Cindy L. Griffin’s feminist understanding of rhetorical practice, one can account for the current state of such discourses on Twitter. This dissertation traces the persistent threads and values of white womanhood from the nineteenth-century British Empire to modern American popular culture. The figure of the white woman was significant to upholding colonialism and empire in the literary mass media and culture of the nineteenth century, and I argue that this figure continues to be used in popular media and online content today to surreptitiously uphold white supremacy and obscure race and gender inequalities. This thesis aims to explore the significance of this question in a contemporary context by cross-examining the two genres in terms of creative agency, accessibility, and aura. Through various interviews and case studies with global artists, I examine similarities and differences in materiality and engagement in public and digital art and the implications of my findings under broader, theoretical frameworks. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสำรวจหนังสือหายากในคอลเล็กชันหนังสือส่วนตัวของพระยาอนุมานราชธนภายในหอสมุดแห่งชาติด้านจำนวนตัวเล่ม ข้อมูลทางบรรณานุกรม ลักษณะทางกายภาพ และประวัติการครอบครอง รวมทั้งลักษณะสภาพการชำรุดวิธีการวิจัยเป็นการวิจัยเชิงสำรวจ ใช้วิธีวิจัย 2 วิธีในการเก็บข้อมูล ได้แก่ การสัมภาษณ์เบื้องต้น (Preliminary interview) เพื่อให้ทราบข้อมูลที่เกี่ยวข้องกับห้องสมุดอนุมานราชธนในช่วงเวลาที่ผ่านมา จากนั้นจึงดำเนินการสำรวจ ซึ่งผู้วิจัยแบ่งขั้นตอนการสำรวจออกเป็น 2 ครั้ง ได้แก่ การสำรวจเบื้องต้น (Pilot survey) และการสำรวจแบบเต็มรูปแบบ (Full survey) โดยใช้แบบฟอร์มการบันทึกข้อมูลเป็นเครื่องมือวิจัยในการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับคอลเล็กชันหนังสือส่วนตัวของพระยาอนุมานราชธนผลการวิจัยพบว่า จำนวนตัวเล่มของหนังสือหายากในคอลเล็กชันหนังสือส่วนตัวของพระยาอนุมานราชธนมีจำนวน 1,226 เล่ม โดยมีจำนวนหนังสือที่ไม่เคยลงรายการบรรณานุกรมในฐานข้อมูลห้องสมุดอัตโนมัติ Aleph จำนวน 215 เล่ม มีลักษณะทางกายภาพส่วนมากไม่มีภาพประกอบหน้าปก และภาพประกอบในเล่มเป็นภาพชีวประวัติบุคคล จำนวนหน้าที่พบโดยส่วนมากคือ 100 หน้าขึ้นไป และขนาดหนังสือเมื่อวัดตามความยาวที่พบมากที่สุด คือ 23 เซนติเมตร ส่วนขนาดที่เหมาะสมของกระดาษไร้กรดต่อขนาดหนังสือ คือ A4 (23*29.2) ส่วนประวัติการครอบครองที่พบสามารถแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ การแสดงความครอบครองโดยบุคคล และการแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของหรือกรรมสิทธิ์โดยห้องสมุด โดยลักษณะการแสดงความครอบครองโดยบุคคลที่พบมากที่สุดคือ หนังสือฉบับที่ผู้แต่งหรือเจ้าของเดิมลงชื่อกำกับไว้ และลักษณะการแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของหรือกรรมสิทธิ์โดยห้องสมุดที่พบมากที่สุด คือ การประทับตราที่หน้าหลังปกใน และเป็นลักษณะตราประทับแบบที่ต้องกรอกข้อความ สำหรับลักษณะการชำรุดที่พบมากที่สุดของคอลเล็กชันนี้ คือ มีร่องรอยการกัดกินของสัตว์และแมลง
