COVID-19 Graphic Design: Data Visualization and Information Design

In this project, students were asked to produce 10-by-16-inch digital posters responding to the challenge and stress of the COVID-19 pandemic. After reading Professor Misty Thomas-Trout’s handwritten letter, the students used the design tools Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign to highlight positive messages coming from the present circumstances.

“You have one meta-objective with this project: Focus on the positive messages only. If negativity is weaved in or comes across your thoughts, jot this down somewhere. Be aware of that thought, but continue to block it out with positivity.”

• Current legal gray area for digital collections: An exception for public libraries and archives as educational tools exists for copyright infringement, but digital archives are not currently protected by this exception unless they can prove that the content is transformative.

• Benefits of archiving scholarship together: Grouping like scholarship together regardless of genre or authorship allows for unique cross-purpose or interdisciplinary connections to be drawn from the collection.

• Humanists of today must devote time and resources to the educational tools and platforms of tomorrow: Without the successful building and completion of means to ensure digital archives can be …

Grand Lake St. Marys Archive And History, E. Adams, Mark Cubberley, Christine Junker

Lake Campus Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This poster will present an overview of our proposed project related to the Grand Lake St Marys archive, as well as the initial local history findings. The objective of our broader project is to create a publicly accessible archive (including newspapers, magazines, historical documents, photographs, maps, oral histories, diaries and letters, and ephemera) related specifically to Grand Lake St Marys and other regional history. To accompany this archive, we want to be able to create and maintain online thematically based exhibits (using tools like Omeka, for example) that would make visible the important environmental, cultural, and regional history of the …

Encoding Prose: The Complete Letters Of Willa Cather A Literary Project In Digital Humanities, Gayle Lynn Rocz, Simone Droge

UCARE: Research Products

The purpose of this study is to further the progress of annotating and sharing renowned Nebraskan author Willa Cather’s correspondence through digital means. I will do this by assisting the current team at the Willa Cather Archive with their project titled The Complete Letters of Willa Cather. The team behind this project has made about 1,600 letters available to the public, and they estimate that by 2022 over 3,000 letters will be accessible through their website. Many libraries, foundations, and collections throughout the United States have cooperated with the project to allow Cather’s work and life to be understood more …

I walk into the room and the smell of burning wood hits me immediately. The warmth from the fireplace grows as I step nearer to it. The fire needs to heat the little cottage through the night so I add a log to the fire. There are a few sparks and embers. I throw a bigger log onto the fire and it drops with a thud. Again, there are barely any sparks or embers. The heat and the smell stay the same. They don’t change and I do not become habituated to it. Rather, they are just a steady stream, …

Silver Lining: A Letter To Students From Misty Thomas-Trout, Misty Thomas-Trout

COVID-19 Graphic Design: Data Visualization and Information Design

This is a handwritten letter from Misty Thomas-Trout to her Graphic Design I (VAD 411) students in March, sent the day before classes resumed following spring break. Initially, virtual education was a precaution, set to last for two weeks; however, it extended for the remainder of the term and the summer term. By the time the fall semester began in late August 2020, more than 5 million cases had been reported in the United States.

Following the handwritten letter is a typed version. The indents of the paragraphs reflect the way the letter appeared on paper.

The letter was the …
