Storytelling In Motion: Rhetorical Approaches To Autoethnography, Critical Pedagogy, And African Filmmaking, Sethunya Mokoko

This dissertation exposes the marginalization in the education systems of my country Lesotho, South Africa, an injustice that still survives long after the plague of Apartheid. Drawing on the values in African epistemologies of storytelling, I describe and illustrate their principles, then show how storytelling can transform composition pedagogy and thus help eradicate the residue of colonization. The methodology draws from auto-ethnography, narrative, spoken word, traditional oral wisdom, and African filmmaking as counter-story and resistance to the ideologies plaguing the minds of colonized South Africans. The Realisation Of Grammatical Tone In Cigogo Verbs, Amani J. Chipalo

This descriptive study aims to investigate how grammatical tone is realized in Cigogo verbs. The information was gathered through interviews and oral history techniques in the villages of Muungano, Ilolo, and Ndebwe in the Mvumi division. The replies from the interviews and the storytelling were captured using an MP3 recorder. The verb forms were then evoked for the analysis of the tone patterns based on the autosegmental theory. The findings show that Cigogo uses a grammatical tone to convey the perfective aspect, imperative mood, and reflexiveness in the past tense (immediate past). Mozambique is a multilingual country that adopted Portuguese as the language of official communication right from Independence Day in 1975. Later in the 1990s it adopted 19 Bantu languages as the media of instruction in lower education. This move opened an avenue for Bantu languages to be used in public domains in the country. This article shows both the contact of English and Kiswahili with Datooga and how noun loans from the two languages are nativized in Datooga. Through elicitation, extraction from oral narrations and reviewing existing documents, English and Kiswahili noun loans were identified in Datooga. The article shows that, regardless of their source, loanwords from the two languages are all integrated into the Datooga noun structure in a uniform way. Phonologically, the loanwords are nativized through replacement of foreign sound with a native sound that has almost similar features in the recipient language, voicing of foreign sounds, vowel heightening and the change …

A discussion on knowledge independence or knowledge-production decolonization with the assumption that an epistemological base for knowledge creation exists in most African societies by drawing from indigenous praxis which includes language and history.

The background to this study highlighted the usage of colonial languages by post-colonial African Societies as the language of knowledge transfer in schools and educational institutions, to the neglect of the mother tongue and local language. This prevents an intellectual dislocation that negatively affects the identity, creativity, and works of learners.

“Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race,” “The race that long in darkness pined,” “To heal and save a race undone,” and “Sanctify a ransomed race” are a few examples of many references to “race” that exist in English-language hymnody. Throughout the nineteenth-century, hymns containing lines such as these, were exported from Britain into mission fields where translators had to find new ways to conceptualize notions of race and, in effect, created new group identities. This article highlights the complimentary weather elements with the emotional turbulence experienced by Irene as she tells the story; Clare’s warmth and beauty to Irene’s cold and lack thereof. This article also explores the skills of Larsen to write these ambiguous complimentary weather elements in Passing by highlighting her other novella Quicksand, published the year before.

Colonialism is a long, brutal process, where natives’ identities are uprooted as colonizers establish their influence in a foreign land. Consequently, through the exploration of the natives’ response to this upheaval throughout the precolonial and colonial eras, the psychological toll that is placed on the colonized is evident.
