Operating since 2004, the Pierre Auger Observatory has led to major advances in our understanding of the ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. The latest findings have revealed new insights that led to the upgrade of the Observatory, with the primary goal of obtaining information on the primary mass of the most energetic cosmic rays on a shower-by-shower basis. In the framework of the upgrade, called AugerPrime, the 1660 water-Cherenkov detectors of the surface array are equipped with plastic scintillators and radio antennas, allowing us to enhance the composition sensitivity. To accommodate new detectors and to increase experimental capabilities, the electronics is also …

We describe a search for gravitational waves from compact binaries with at least one component with mass 0.2 –1.0M⊙ and mass ratio q ≥ 0.1 in Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Advanced Virgo data collected between 2019 November 1, 15:00 UTC and 2020 March 27, 17:00 UTC. No signals were detected. The most significant candidate has a false alarm rate of 0.2yr−1 . We estimate the sensitivity of our search over the entirety of Advanced LIGO’s and Advanced Virgo’s third observing run, and present the most stringent limits to date on the merger rate of binary black holes …

The Vera C. Rubin Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) holds the potential to revolutionize time domain astrophysics, reaching completely unexplored areas of the Universe and mapping variability time scales from minutes to a decade. To prepare to maximize the potential of the Rubin LSST data for the exploration of the transient and variable Universe, one of the four pillars of Rubin LSST science, the Transient and Variable Stars Science Collaboration, one of the eight Rubin LSST Science Collaborations, has identified research areas of interest and requirements, and paths to enable them. While our roadmap is ever-evolving, this document …

Recovering Lost Exposure From The Majorana Demonstrator And Testing Data Selection Assumptions, Thomas Lannen
Theses and Dissertations
The Majorana Demonstrator recently concluded its search for neutrinoless double beta decay using an array of up to 40.4kg of germanium detectors, 27kg of which were enriched in 76Ge and housed inside a copper and lead compact shield located at the 4850 foot level in a clean room in the Davis Campus of the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota. This search proceeded from June 26, 2015 until March 3, 2021 and 64.5 kg yr of enriched active exposure was acquired while achieving a world leading energy resolution of 0.12% FWHM at 2039 keV, one of …
A Field-Programmable Metamaterial Using Memristor As A Stable Switcher, Taekuk Hong
A Field-Programmable Metamaterial Using Memristor As A Stable Switcher, Taekuk Hong
Theses and Dissertations
Before the memristor was discovered, there were RLC circuits as representative passive devices. However, the fourth fundamental two-terminal circuit has been discovered by Dr. Leon Chua in 1971 and has been called a memristor. The memristor is a compound word of memory and resistor, and is an element whose resistive value is not constant and whose resistive value changes depending on the applied voltage and is recorded as a memory. It is mainly used in resistive switching and is the center of this research theme. A metamaterial is artificially created material that has never been found in nature. The theory …
A Method For Single-Particle Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy With A Nanofabricated Coplanar Stripline, Jacob Martin
A Method For Single-Particle Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy With A Nanofabricated Coplanar Stripline, Jacob Martin
Theses and Dissertations
Drawing from magnetic particle imaging principles, magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS) serves as a valuable tool employing superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) in diverse applications ranging from medical imaging to biosensing and the comprehensive study of magnetic particles’ characteristics. MPS leverages the nonlinear response exhibited by SPIONs when a external magnetic field is applied, enabling a highly sensitive method for examining biological systems and more. However, conventional MPS setups demand a high particle concentration of approximately 10^15 particles per liter to generate a detectable response. The first objective of this work is to simulate the dynamics of a system with the ability …

Faster, Cheaper, And Better Cfd: A Case For Machine Learning To Augment Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes, John Peter Romano Ii
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In recent years, the field of machine learning (ML) has made significant advances, particularly through applying deep learning (DL) algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI). The literature shows several ways that ML may enhance the power of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to improve its solution accuracy, reduce the needed computational resources and reduce overall simulation cost. ML techniques have also expanded the understanding of underlying flow physics and improved data capture from experimental fluid dynamics.
This dissertation presents an in-depth literature review and discusses ways the field of fluid dynamics has leveraged ML modeling to date. The author selects and describes …

Physics Theses & Dissertations
Energy recovery linacs (ERLs), focus on recycling the kinetic energy of electron beam for the purpose of accelerating a newly injected beam within the same accelerating structure. The rising developments in the super conducting radio frequency technology, ERL technology has achieved several noteworthy milestones over the past few decades. In year 2003, Jefferson Lab has successfully demonstrated a single pass energy recovery at the CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, they conducted successful experiments with IR-FEL demo and upgrades, as well as the UV FEL driver. This multi-pass, multi-GeV range energy recovery demonstration proposed to be carried out at CEBAF accelerator at Jefferson …
Perception Of Nuclear Security As A Barrier To Female Representation In Africa, Primerose Ruhukwa Ms
Perception Of Nuclear Security As A Barrier To Female Representation In Africa, Primerose Ruhukwa Ms
International Journal of Nuclear Security
Women are strongly underrepresented in the nuclear energy sector, particularly in the field of Nuclear security. Regardless of several government efforts to increase the number of women in this field, which include gender balance polices, education, and awareness campaigns, the nuclear security industry remains a male-dominated field. The reason why nuclear security is shunned by most women in Africa is because of an incorrect perception of what nuclear security is. When a lay person hears the term nuclear, the first thing that comes to mind is nuclear weapons, and many are quick to judge, saying that Africa does not …

The increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotic agents is a main global public health problem. The use of nanoparticles is one of the promising ways to overcome microbial resistance to antimicrobial agents. Metal nanoparticles are increasingly used to target bacterial strains. Advances in nanotechnology, in particular the ability to synthesize nanoparticles of specific size and shape, are likely to lead to the development of new antibacterial agents. The antibacterial activities of nanoparticles are largely influenced by their sizes and large surface area/mass ratio. The antibacterial mechanisms of nanoparticles are poorly understood, but the currently accepted mechanisms include oxidative stress induction, …

We Demonstrate That An Interferometer Based On Modulated Magnetic Field Pulses Enables Precise Characterization Of The Energies And Lifetimes Of Efimov Trimers Irrespective Of The Magnitude And Sign Of The Interactions In Rb85 Thermal Gases. Despite Thermal Effects, Interference Fringes Develop When The Dark Time Between The Pulses Is Varied. This Enables The Selective Excitation Of Coherent Superpositions Of Trimer, Dimer, And Free-Atom States. The Interference Patterns Possess Two Distinct Damping Timescales At Short And Long Dark Times That Are Either Equal To Or Twice As Long As The Lifetime Of Efimov Trimers, Respectively. Specifically, This Behavior At Long Dark …
