Teaching is not just delivering lectures but anything we might do that helps and encourages students to learn.

Envision your typical business law or legal environment of business classroom, filled with students. As class begins, most students are alert and attentive to the instructor. However, after class is under way, some students have diverted their attention elsewhere. This Article presents a brief summary of the available research on those students who have used computers throughout their entire educational careers, including their strengths, their weaknesses, and how they differ from their instructors-many of whom did not use computers to any significant degree for research during college and law school. This Article asserts that these differences are cultural and argues that, in the interest of better educating and preparing our students to become lifelong learners who are equipped to self-assess their research, law school teachers must adjust their teaching styles to not only teach to these students' strengths and …

Hamline University School of Law recently launched a medical-legal partnership (MLP) with United Family Medicine (UFM), a community clinic on West Seventh Street. UFM is a nonprofit provider of primary health care that strives to meet the needs of the medically uninsured, underinsured, and underserved residents of Saint Paul. One of the main components of the partnership is a law school clinic that will provide legal assistance and educate student attorneys as part of a holistic approach to medical care.

Intergrating Skills And Collaborating Across Law Schools: An Example From Immigration Law, Anna R. Welch

This Essay discusses the design and implementation of introductory Immigration Law courses taught at two different law schools, Western State College of Law in Orange County, California and the University of Maine Law School in Portland, Maine. Although the courses took place on opposite coasts and did not engage in a formal partnership that was visible to students, the authors deliberately planned the courses in close collaboration with one another behind the scenes. In doing so, the courses shared the explicit goal of increasing students’ exposure to practical lawyering skills while reinforcing students’ understanding of the substantive immigration laws. This …

With the challenges facing law schools because of declining enrollment and lower job placement rates, there has been an increased push for more practical training in law school. In fact, a number of law schools are now using the phrase "practice-ready" to promote the practical training provided to their students. Additionally, the new accreditation standards from the ABA Section on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar ("ABA Section on Legal Education") focus more on teaching students professional skills. The New York Board of Law Examiners (BOLE) proposes adopting the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), substituting it for the current New York Bar Exam (NYBE). The BOLE proposal is currently under active consideration, and it is the subject of public hearings. This article examines some of the issues the proposal raises. First, we look at the history of the proposal, and at the differences between the UBE and the NYBE as it is currently administered. Then we look in detail at the proposal for New York: a combination of the UBE plus a stand-alone one-hour multiple-choice New York test. Finally, …

In this Article, the co-authors confront one of the next generation issues for underrepresented groups in legal education: what happens after tenure victories, especially for the victors in a war wrought with gender and racial inequities? Even if all is fair in love, war, and tenure battles, it remains most troubling when, even in this century, acts of racial and/or gender aggression are targeted at qualified tenure candidates. Many professors in legal education have noticed increased angst in students, who fear that well-paying jobs are scarce. Often, that angst is manifested in the classroom. Some educators blame the phenomenon on the distractions of technology—but more specifically, the author finds that technology has brought all of our stressors to the fore, affecting concentration and the ability to absorb information. As legal educators consider how to improve the outcomes of legal education, maximizing the knowledge, skills, and values taught during the law school experience, consideration should be given to increasing interprofessional learning opportunities in the curricula. As Best Practices for Legal Education suggested, the creative thinking necessary for effective problem-solving includes an understanding of interprofessional dimensions of practice, but interprofessional opportunities are still the exception rather than the norm in legal education. Interprofessional legal education intentionally asks law students to blend the knowledge, skills, and values of two or more professions in order to address complex legal problems. Placing students …

Recent pedagogical, economic and technological changes require law schools to reevaluate their resource allocations. Although typically viewed in terms of curricular changes, it is important also to focus on the very significant investment in legal scholarship and its impact. Typically this has been determined by some version of citation counting with little regard for what it means to be cited. This Article discusses why this is a deeply flawed measure of impact. Much of that discussion is based on an empirical study the authors conducted. The investigation found that citation by other authors is highly influenced by the rank of …

Immigrant Lawyers And The Changing Face Of The U.S. Legal Profession, Ethan Michelson

In this Comment, I extend Lazarus-Black and Globokar's analysis further downstream to consider the stakes for the U.S. legal profession as a whole. Gatekeepers to LL.M. programs are doing far more than determining individual fates and collectively shaping the future of U.S. legal education. I will demonstrate in this Comment that their work helps shape-in concrete, measurable ways-the demographic composition of the U.S. legal profession. In so doing, I will contribute to the emerging field of legal demography, which refers to the study of lawyers through the analysis of data not collected for this specific purpose.
