Milbank LLP announced a significant expansion of its partnership with the Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice at Cardozo School of Law, increasing its charitable commitment to $2.5 million through 2029. The expanded funding will strengthen the Milbank Exoneration Review Unit, support additional staffing, and advance post-conviction advocacy for wrongfully convicted and excessively sentenced individuals.

The Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Foundation announced an additional $500,000 gift to the Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice at Cardozo School of Law, along with a four-year matching commitment of up to $2 million. Qualifying local taxpayers will again have help navigating federal and state tax returns this spring, as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program returns to the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.

Both U.S. and certain international taxpayers are eligible to utilize the free services, which will run on Mondays and Tuesdays from 6:30–9:30 p.m. beginning January 26 and continuing through March 24. Services will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in Room 121 on the first floor of the Law School, located at 211 South Indiana Avenue in Bloomington.

Historical Revisionism And Public Institutions: The Smithsonian’S Dilemma, Natalia Palacino Camargo

On August 10, 1846, President James K. Polk signed legislation establishing the Smithsonian Institution, created from the bequest of British scientist James Smithson, as “an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” Structurally, the Smithsonian occupies a unique legal status as a trust instrumentality of the United States: it is governed by a Board of Regents and a Secretary, is separate and distinct from governmental branches of the national government, and holds no regulatory authority beyond its own premises.  While courts have held that it is not a governmental agency, it shares immunity from state and local regulation and …

Lela P. Love, Professor of Law (Emerita) and Founding Director of the Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution, received the Charles M. Newman Award from the New York State Bar Association's Dispute Resolution Section in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the fields of mediation and dispute resolution. The announcement also highlights her pioneering role in establishing Cardozo's nationally recognized dispute resolution program.

Women In Law And The Draft, Thomas Helgerman, Benjamin David Pyle

Faculty Scholarship

Between 1964 and 1973, women’s representation in full-time law school programs rose fivefold, from 3.7% to 20.1%. This paper examines whether Vietnam War draft policy contributed to this increase. In 1968, men enrolled in law school lost eligibility for 2-S student deferments, threatening law schools’ tuition revenues and incentivizing schools to admit more women to stabilize enrollment. To test this mechanism, we construct a school-by-year dataset of enrollment counts split by women/men and full-time/part-time status. Using a uniform adoption difference-in-differences design, we find that women’s representation rises by 2 percentage points in full-time programs relative to part-time programs (which were …
