Over the past decade major public policy concerns over the environment, national security, the economy, and climate change have converged, creating significant pressure to reform America’s energy system. The result has been a tremendous increase in the use of renewable energy sources with growth only expected to accelerate. This new development represents a radical shift for a nation whose electricity system was built to run on fossil fuels and hydroelectric dams. The electricity grid is a complex interconnected system requiring constant balancing of supply and demand. Through either executive or legislative power, state and local governments are rapidly effecting policies that encourage environmental sustainability.  Many of these policies have logically targeted buildings and infrastructure, both of which have a significant adverse impact on the environment.  In the United States, 38 percent of the nation’s carbon dioxide emissions and 67 percent of its electricity usage come from buildings.  New laws and policies are attempting to decrease these figures by requiring construction projects to “go green” and implement sustainable building practices.  These legal initiatives have the potential to create substantial environmental benefits by reducing energy consumption, greenhouse gas …

The Environmentally Friendly Drilling Systems (EFD) Program, managed by the Houston Advanced Research Center, works to identify, develop and transfer critical, cost effective, new technologies that can provide policy makers and industry with the ability to develop natural gas reserves in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. Funding for the EFD Program is through a grant from the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America, established under the 2005 Energy Act. Some nations have considerably more renewable energy policies than others and this research is attempting to discover why. Renewable energy use is quickly growing in our world and has become a major topic in today’s politics. Existing literature suggests various theories as to why some nations have more renewable energy policies than others. I test these theories with data from two major data sources; REN21, the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century, and the International Energy Agency.
