Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
Artifacts of female dress such as brooches and pendants have long been objects of interest to scholars of late Iron Age /early medieval Scandinavia. They figure in dating and tracing stylistic developments, and their presence is often (controversially) used to help assign gender to burials. There are three types of pendants which constitute a type of feminine adornment unique to Viking Age Gotland: the so-called tongue, sieve, and ladle pendants. The purpose of this paper is to examine these pendant types and the possible symbolic and magical functions behind their forms and manner of use, and how these functions intersected …

This is a brief report on a summer study abroad program which the University of Illinois conducted in Northern Sweden and Svalbard, Norway between 2012-2016, for which the author served as program organizer and instructor. It originally appeared as a post on the U.S. Department of State's blog "Our Arctic Nation," which reported on Arctic connections between each of the states in the union and the District of Columbia ( https://medium.com/our-arctic-nation ). This blog was condensed for this commemorative book which was printed in a limited edition by U.S. Arctic Council Chairmanship Initiative.

Sustainability and Social Justice
This paper looks at the structure of discrimination and marginalization of refugees and asylum-seekers. The paper investigates a new form of housing –– floatels –– which was seen in Sweden in 2016. This paper explores the relevant literature on identity, biopower, and spatial segregation, to make the case that floatels are contemporary forms of encampment. Floatels are clear examples of the State’s use of biopower to spatially segregate certain undesirable populations. By providing a case study of the situation in Sweden, the overall goal of the paper is to highlight the issues and complexity involved in refugee housing. In particular, …
