“I am the only person who’s unique like I’m unique,” looks at how being the odd-one-out can be good in some situations and terrible in others. Whether it’s good or bad, it seems, ends up being very complicated.

“Children and Dogs,” examines how no matter what, children and dogs are always the same in every culture. They don’t know the rules of their societies and, in many ways, this is a wonderful thing. Children and dogs share an innocence that makes their lives more enjoyable.

Globitos De Nieve, Lauren Keny 2021 Denison University

Globitos De Nieve, Lauren Keny

Collage

“Globitos de Nieve” explores the meaning of a snow globe, what exactly a snow globe is, what it symbolizes, and a suggestion of how to use one. The snow globe is a great venue for the human imagination.

La Apatía, Alyssa Rossodivita 2021 Denison University

Something I have noticed about Denison is that I am surrounded by people who care immensely about the world and about humanity. These people have encouraged and inspired me to educate myself, experience things for myself, and form opinions myself—all of which were new to me as a freshman. These experiences have led me to a very important understanding: we all have the capacity to contribute to the community, and we all have the responsibility to be informed and compassionate. Life is based on the relationships we build and the community we are a part of.

This essay was inspired by my various dormitory experiences. I feel it is a rather good guide to living with someone new and to the beginning of the college experience. Avoid the same mistakes I made!

La Competición De Denison, Danielle Torpey 2021 Denison University

La Competición De Denison, Danielle Torpey

Collage

Students at Denison become competitive about the sacrifices they make for their studies. The harder students work, and the less they sleep, the more credit they get in the competition. The irony is that the person who wins ends up being the most exhausted and cannot pass his classes.

“A Él” De Mis Sueños, Catherine Mehta 2021 Denison University

“A Él” De Mis Sueños, Catherine Mehta

Collage

This short story is derived from the Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda poem “A él.” It incorporates phrases from the poem and develops them into a concrete plot. It explores the literary and personal interpretations of a poem in the form of prose and imitates the style and narrative emphasis of the original work.
