The Lake View Cemetery, founded in 1869, was modeled after the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France. Over 107,000 individuals are interred on the sprawling 285 acre expanse that is located four and one-half miles from Cleveland's Public Square. According to a Plain Dealer report in 1870, the cemetery was designed to combine all the attractive features that "nature and true art can produce" to harmonize nature's alphabet-"stone, earth, wood and water." Picturing “Doing Gender”, Danielle Lutz

This project explores the idea of “Doing Gender,” a term coined by sociologists Candace West and Don Zimmerman. The photographic series is comprised of diptychs in which I photographed people performing a feminine gender performance, as well as a masculine one. By exploring gender in this way and capturing it on camera, I have illustrated ways in which gender is a learned performance. This paper details the methods used to create this project, as well as its intentions as an analysis of gender performance.

Commercial photography has a tendency to force upon us a standard template of what the ideal person is or looks like. Unfortunately, the artificial standard is horribly unachievable and detrimental to physical and mental health, which produces sentiments of insufficiency and abjection with the self, especially among young impressionable girls. In a sick - and very modern - twist of evolutionary progress we find ourselves idealizing the depictions of models appearing to be on the verge of starvation. This article examines the power and sexuality in models produced through commercial photography and its effects on society at-large.

The works presented in "Anatomies of Melancholy" explore the residual affects of pain and trauma through photography. By combining personal stories with documentary photography this body of work conveys a tension between the (in)visibility of pain and the need to speak*. Through the process of spending time with individuals and discussing their personal trauma while making photographs, I hope to acknowledge and even conserve the pain of others. Though the images do not include a narrative of the subjects' pain, they are able to communicate and begin a visual discourse. The raw and emotive images become a platform for the …
