Photography Senior Thesis Projects

This series is a contemporary interpretation of post-mortem photography, depicting the relationship between the physical and metaphysical remnants of life. The scenes are absent of a resident, showing only what remains, while the fabric portraits represent the ethereal vestige, the intangible memory friends and family hold on to. The corresponding paper reviews my photographic journey and details my processes necessary to create this body of work. Death is not always an easy subject to confront; with this project, I ask viewers to examine their own mortality and accept death’s inevitability.

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This book shows the creative process and final product of my Independent Study Project, conducted in Prague as part of a semester study abroad program. The project started with interviewing four Czech graphic designers who described places in Prague that are especially meaningful to them. After collecting and transcribing their stories related to their places of inspiration, I visited the locations myself and photographed the locations with sensitivity to the details the artists had emphasized as unique to their experience of the place. Views of the world come from watching, looking, and feeling emotional relationships between people, things, and places. This fabricated series establishes the willingness to believe the images are actual photographic records by combining subjects viewing a variety of images. Metaphorical narratives show a vision of the incongruent world. The engagement begins with a shadow or back of someone or thing looking into the frame. Color, texture, and form within produce a voyeuristic psychological and emotional response. The paradox is what pushes the edges of expectation. Synchronicity of the elements within the images thrust us into a surreal moment. Belief in …
