Salted Paper Prints And The Harvard Class Albums, Melissa Banta, Elena Bulat
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The first appearance of photographs in class albums at Harvard University occurred in 1852, beginning a tradition that has continued to the present day. The albums include photographic portraits of the graduating college classes, faculty, and staff as well as views of the campus. The class photographers, including John Adams Whipple, James Wallace Black, and George Kendall Warren, created salted paper prints for the albums from 1852 until 1864. The collection of early class albums was recently surveyed, as part of a larger initiative undertaken by Harvard Library’s the Weissman Preservation Center to preserve and enhance access to salt prints …

When Narrative Fails: Context And Physical Evidence As Means Of Understanding The Northwest Boundary Survey Photographs Of 1857–1862, James A. Eason
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The photographs of the Northwest Boundary Survey, taken chiefly in 1860–1861, present many of the problems commonly encountered in the study of nineteenth-century photography. These details will help archivists and other collection managers make good decisions about depth of cataloging, digital imaging choices, and interfaces for online …

In my work, my main concern is my physical appearance and its relationship to interior emotion (the outward vs. the inward). It is my hope that I communicate emotion through images of my body and, in turn, create a dialogue between me and my audience. It is my goal to create photographs that can communicate feeling without …

Schmucker Art Catalogs
Following the Industrial Revolution in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, countries such as the United States and England experienced a widening gap between the rich industrialists and the impoverished working class. As a result, poverty quickly shifted from a localized problem to a national epidemic. Each country was faced with the challenges of addressing and alleviating poverty on a national scale. With a limited amount of resources, questions arose about who should receive relief. What should it look like? How should it be administered? And how would poverty and policy affect political, economic, social and familial structures? [ …
