สภาพแวดล้อมเป็นหนึ่งในสิ่งสำคัญที่ส่งผลต่อการเสื่อมสภาพของงานศิลปะ ภายในพิพิธภัณฑ์จึงมีข้อกำหนดเพื่อควบคุมปัจจัยที่ก่อให้เกิดการเสื่อมสภาพ อย่างไรก็ตามยังมีงานศิลปะจำนวนมากที่ไม่ได้ถูกเก็บรักษาภายในสถานที่ที่มีการควบคุม ดังนั้นหากสามารถทำนายกระบวนการเสื่อมสภาพที่เกิดขึ้นและมีการป้องกันแก้ไขทันที จะสามารถช่วยรักษางานศิลปะนั้นให้อยู่ในสภาพดีและยืดเวลาที่ต้องบูรณะออกไปได้ งานวิจัยนี้จึงสนใจศึกษาผลของการจำลองการเสื่อมสภาพที่มีสาเหตุจากแสงและความชื้นต่อสมบัติทางกายภาพและเคมีของสารสี เพื่อใช้ในการติดตามการเสื่อมสภาพขององค์ประกอบของชิ้นงานศิลปะ โดยทดลองกับสารสีจำลองที่พบในพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์รัชกาลที่ 5 และพระบรมราชินีนาถ ที่หอประวัติจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย งานวิจัยนี้แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ส่วนหลัก ประการแรกคือการวิเคราะห์สารสีที่ใช้ในพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์ด้วยการถ่ายภาพเชิงเทคนิคและเอกซเรย์ฟลูออเรสเซนต์สเปกโทรสโกปี ประการที่สองคือการศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสารสีในแผ่นสีตัวอย่าง เมื่อผ่านการจำลองการเสื่อมสภาพที่ระยะเวลาการเร่งการเสื่อมสภาพด้วยแสงที่ 5, 30, 50, 70 และ 100 ชั่วโมง และที่ระดับความชื้นสัมพัทธ์ 55% และ 75% ตรวจสอบผลด้วยอินฟราเรดสเปกโทรสโกปีและรามานสเปกโทรสโกปี ร่วมกับการวิเคราะห์ความต่างสีระหว่างแผ่นสีตัวอย่างภายใต้สภาวะควบคุมและแผ่นสีตัวอย่างที่ผ่านการเร่งการเสื่อมสภาพ ประการสุดท้ายคือการทำนายการเสื่อมสภาพของพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์ด้วยการเปรียบเทียบระหว่างสเปกตรัมการสะท้อนที่ได้จากสีในพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์และแผ่นสีตัวอย่าง จากผลการวิจัยที่เทียบกับแผ่นชาร์ทสารสี CHSOS คาดว่ามีการใช้สารสีจำนวน 12 ชนิดในพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์ เมื่อศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเคมีของสารสีในแผ่นสีตัวอย่างที่ผ่านการเร่งการเสื่อมสภาพและแผ่นสีตัวอย่างภายใต้สภาวะควบคุม พบว่าสารสีที่เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสเปกตรัมอินฟราเรด ได้แก่ สารสีสีดำงาช้าง สารสีสีน้ำตาลอัมเบอร์ สารสีสีแดงอะลิซาริน สารสีจากดินแดง สารสีสีเหลืองโครเมียม สารสีจากดินเหลือง และสารสีสีน้ำเงินมายา และสารสีที่เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสเปกตรัมรามาน ได้แก่ สารสีสีขาวไททาเนียมและสารสีสีขาวสังกะสี เมื่อวิเคราะห์ความแตกต่างสี พบว่าตัวอย่างสีที่ความชื้นสัมพัทธ์ 75% มีแนวโน้มที่จะให้ความแตกต่างสีมากกว่าตัวอย่างสีที่ความชื้นสัมพัทธ์ 55% อย่างไรก็ตามการเปลี่ยนแปลงจากการจำลองการเสื่อมสภาพนี้ยังไม่มากพอที่จะใช้ทำนายการเปลี่ยนแปลงในภาพพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์ได้อย่างแม่นยำ เพียงแต่ระบุได้ว่าการเสื่อมสภาพของสารสีในพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์เทียบได้กับการเสื่อมสภาพมากกว่า 20 ปี ของการเก็บรักษางานศิลปะไว้ในพิพิธภัณฑ์
