The Lion In Winter : Review Of Collected Works Of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Volume Viii: Letters And Social Aims Edited By Ronald A. Bosco, Glen M. Johnson, And Joel Myerson., Richard Deming

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The recent publication by Harvard University Press of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Letters and Social Aims, Volume VIII of the Collected Works, is in many ways the most important contribution of this ongoing project, which presents scholarly editions of one of America’s most central literary and philosophical figures. Among all of Emerson’s books, Letters and Social Aims is without a doubt the most vexed in terms of textual questions, coming as it did so late in his life and at the dimming of his powers. However, the volume also represents some of the finest, most necessary thinking of this shaper of …

Changes Coming To Documentary Editing, Amanda A Gailey, Andrew Jewell

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

This spring the Council of the Association for Documentary Editing (ADE), working with the Publications Committee, accepted our proposal to edit Documentary Editing, beginning with the 2012 issue; the Council also approved a change in the journal’s title to Scholarly Editing: The Annual of the Association for Documentary Editing. Our plan is to continue the fine traditions of the journal— essays about the theory and practice of editing, reviews of editions, and news pertinent to the ADE membership—while simultaneously taking the journal in an exciting new direction. Owing largely to a partnership with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Digital …

The Role Of Revolution And Rioting In French Wine's Relationship With Place, Brian Murphy 2011 Technological University Dublin

The Role Of Revolution And Rioting In French Wine's Relationship With Place, Brian Murphy

French Wine: The role of revolution and rioting in establishing it’s relationship with “place”

Many of the rules and regulations surrounding the production of French wines have been heavily debated and criticised over the years. They have been accused of limiting French wine’s ability to compete with new world marketing successes. Appellation d’Origine Controlee represents France’s much imitated system of controlling both geographically based names and indeed production variables associated with these AOCs in terms of “place”.

Prior to the development of the Appellation d’origine controlee laws in 1937, France bore witness to two key wine related violent episodes in …

Presidential Address--New Editorial Futures For The Past, Kenneth M. Price

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Documentary Editing has served the association well since 1979 as a print journal, but it has run into the familiar problems of a print journal with a limited circulation and ever-increasing costs for paper, printing, and mailing. There have also been problems in having a lack of continuity in the position of editor. The association owes many thanks to the publications committee, and in particular to Ron Bosco and Rich Leffler for their recent work as co-editors. Bosco and Leffler agreed to serve for two years, and with time slipping away we needed new leadership. Luckily Amanda Gailey and Andrew …

Egypt In January 2011: Social Media As A Tool And Not A Cause Of The Revolution, Jillian Tobin 2011 St. John Fisher University

Egypt In January 2011: Social Media As A Tool And Not A Cause Of The Revolution, Jillian Tobin

3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing

Overview: On January 28th, 2011 Al Jazeera English broadcasted an image of hundreds of Egyptian citizens massed on the Nile Bridge facing armed police forces (“Police attack praying Egyptians”). In order to prevent the citizens’ advance, the police arrived in tanks and pelted them with water cannons and tear gas. However, these deterrents did not dampen the Egyptians’ drive. They continued to advance by organizing themselves in rows in order to endure the obstacles as one. Ultimately, the Egyptians forced the drastically more equipped police forces to withdraw and gained access to the other side of the bridge. Their noble …

Glorious Constructions: The Struggle To Preserve Salvation-Themed Visionary Art Environments, Molly Elaine Sheehan 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Glorious Constructions: The Struggle To Preserve Salvation-Themed Visionary Art Environments, Molly Elaine Sheehan

Master's Theses

Salvation-themed art environments are a roadside rarity, built out of a strong visionary dedication to God, but the sites are disappearing simply because the work is misunderstood. The historiography on the subject is sparse, trending more toward coffee table books with big glossy pictures than real scholarly endeavors, but the consensus among all has been clear. The sites are a valuable part of the recent American cultural landscape, crossing several scholarly fields - art, architecture, and history - and uniting them into a cohesive preservation movement. On a series of trips to visit, see, and experience five of these sites, …

Reliable Words; Third Person Pronouns In Indonesian News Reports, Dwi Noverini Djenar

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article examines uses of Indonesian third person singular pronouns ia and dia in news reports. It takes as its departure point the general account of the pronouns which specifies that ia can occur only in subject position, while dia can occur in subject or object position. The article shows that, although both pronouns can occur in subject position, they differ distributionally and functionally. Ia occurs almost three times as frequently as dia and predominates in subject position, while dia occurs mostly in non-subject position. Ia is primarily used to convey the notion that the referent is a reliable and …

Gender And The Indonesian Pronouns, Hein Steinhauer

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The absence of a gender opposition in the Indonesian pronominal system requires special strategies in the translation from languages which do have such an opposition illustrated in the first part opf this article. In the second part the lexical and morphological means are discussed with which Indonesian expresses gender, culminating in a description of the use of perempuan and wanita, pria and laki-laki.

Lexicon And Word Formation In Indonesian Bajo, Chandra Nuraini

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper1 deals with the phonology and the lexicology of the Indonesian Bajo language and more specifically with the dialect or variant that can be heard all around the Flores Sea in Kangean, South-East Sulawesi, Sumbawa, and Flores. The phonological survey focuses on vowel lengthening, gemination, pre-nasalized phonemes, and sandhi. The second part of this paper proposes an insight into Bajo lexicology, restricted to nominal and verbal derivation.

Climate And Culture Changes, Lessons, And Challenges, Yunita T. Winarto 2010 Universitas Indonesia

Climate And Culture Changes, Lessons, And Challenges, Yunita T. Winarto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

From generation to generation over the centuries, people in all parts of the world have developed adaptive social-cultural institutions and strategies of natural resource management based on the intimate relationship they had with their environment. At present, recent global warming is threatening people's lives. Unfortunately, climate change is a natural phenomenon which is neither easy to observe, nor to predict and anticipate accurately. In many places, local people can no longer rely on earlier experiences and existing socio-cultural institutions to adjust to unprecedented changes. We are in urgent need of specific efforts to re-interpret and enrich our knowledge of this …

Data For Lexicography; The Central Role Of The Corpus, Allan F. Lauder 2010 Universitas Indonesia

Data For Lexicography; The Central Role Of The Corpus, Allan F. Lauder

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper looks at the nature of data for lexicography and in particular on the central role that electronic corpora can play in providing it. Data has traditionally come from existing dictionaries, citations, and from the lexicographer's own knowledge of words, through introspection. Each of these is examined and evaluated. Then the electronic corpus is considered. Different kinds of corpora are described and key design criteria are explained, in particular the size of corpus needed for lexicography as well as the issue of representativeness and sampling. The advantages and disadvantages of corpora are weighed and compared against the other types …

Aspect And Modality In Indonesian; The Case Of "Sudah", "Telah", "Pernah", And "Sempat", Philippe Grangé

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In this paper, I describe four Indonesian aspect markers, sudah, telah, pernah, and sempat, showing that the main opposition between them relies not only on their aspectual meanings, but also on the various modalities they express. The opposition between the very frequent markers sudah and telah is analysed in detail. The syntactic and semantic survey shows that these two markers are not synonyms in most contexts.

Cross- And Trans-Language Morphology; The Lexicography Of Indonesian Names, Dick van der Meij 2010 Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatulah Jakarta

Cross- And Trans-Language Morphology; The Lexicography Of Indonesian Names, Dick Van Der Meij

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Different form many other name-giving possibilities in the world, in Indonesia parents are free to give their children any name they like. These names, many of which are auspicious in view of the child's future, are often constructed by means of productive morphological procedures. Seven suffixes are followed through history and culture and their possibilities in making new names are explored. The suffixes concern the female -ingsih, -ingrum, -ingtyas, -ingdyah, -astuti, -wati, and the male -wan. Various ins and outs concerning these suffixes are explored and their attachments to various words from various word classes from Indonesian, Javanese and other …

Dharmawang A'S Heritage On The Appreciation Of The Old Javanese Mah Bh Rata, Willem Van Der Molen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

As we all know, the Old Javanese Mah bh rata was not created from scratch by a Javanese author but was translated (in some sense) from the Sanskrit. The story of Hi imb reveals an interesting difference between the Old Javanese version and the Sanskrit version of the text. In the latter2 Hi imb appeals to Kunt , Bh ma's mother, after Bh ma keeps rejecting her. However, it is not Kunt who gives the answer but Yudhi hira, her son: he is the one who gives permission to Hi imb to take Bh ma as her husband. We should …
