Sundanese Performing Arts In The Us As Legacy Of The Center For World Music, Kathy Foley 2025 University of California, Santa Cruz

Sundanese Performing Arts In The Us As Legacy Of The Center For World Music, Kathy Foley

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Presentation of Sundanese arts in the US by non-Sundanese grew from a program of the Center for World Music (CWM), an incubator for Sundanese performing arts practice in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1970s. Those (both Sundanese and American) coming out of that encounter engaged in intercultural teaching and performance of music, dance, and wayang (puppet/human dance theatre) in the US in the then developing programs leading to a BA or graduate degree in ethnomusicology, dance, or theatre arts. Performances by Sundanese gamelan groups with American artists in and beyond the university also developed. While such groups persist, …

Beyond The "Zaman Kaset" (Era Of The Cassette); Interview With Euis Komariah, Henry Spiller

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Indonesian music fans all over the world were saddened to learn of the untimely death of Euis Komariah on 11 August 2011, in Bandung, West Java. Ibu Euis earned international fame as an award-winning singer, a teacher, and a businesswoman. I had the opportunity to interview her about her illustrious career on 19 April 2007, during her residency at the University of California, Davis. This essay provides an annotated translation of that interview, in which we addressed topics including media (radio broadcasting and the cassette industry), recording technologies, the development of new tunings and modes, and the development of jaipongan …

A Virtual Art Festival In West Java; Participatory Culture During The Pandemic, Neneng Yanti Khozanatu Lahpan

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

YouTube was used as a significant platform for public performances around the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic, including those given by contemporary and traditional artists and communities. Although this transference of public performance to virtual performance has meant challenges for traditional artists, it has also encouraged them to create new creative media spaces. Instead of confronting digital technology, some traditional artists compromise and negotiate with it. Through an ethnographic account of a performance in Tasikmalaya, West Java, this article describes how traditional artistic forms were preserved through a virtual-based art festival performed by the art community, Komunitas Cermin Tasikmalaya. Solidarity, …

The Sundanese Weekly Magazine "Manglé"; Fostering The Growth Of Sundanese Literature As Part Of Indonesian Cultural History, Taufik Rahayu

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Reflecting on the evolution of the weekly Sundanese magazine, Manglé, since its establishment in 1957, this article traces the magazine’s vital role in fostering the growth of modern Sundanese writing. For the past 66 years, it has provided a platform for Sundanese writers to showcase their works, with numerous prominent authors gracing its pages. At the peak of its success in 1964, Manglé had a circulation of 70,000 copies, but its circulation has dwindled over time. The advent of the internet and social media has presented new challenges, compelling Manglé to struggle to recapture its former glory. However, the …

Ajip Rosidi’S "Kegelisahan" (Restlessness) In Between Sundanese And Indonesian Literature, Teddi Muhtadin, Mikihiro Moriyama

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article explores the literary journey of Ajip Rosidi, one of Indonesia’s most prolific writers, highlighting his unique position between Sundanese and Indonesian literature. Ajip authored over 300 works spanning diverse genres, making significant contributions to literature and the preservation of cultural heritage. The article examines his ambivalence or restlessness (kegelisahan) regarding the tension between regional and national identities in literature, as exemplified in his reflections and creative output. Ajip’s early life in a linguistically mixed region of West Java laid the foundation for his literary pursuits in both Sundanese and Indonesian. His works often oscillated between traditional …

"Ngadéngékeun Nu Mantun"; Constructing The "Carita Pantun" Performance In Rice Planting Ritual Of The Baduy Indigenous Community, Endin Saparudin, Priscila Fitriasih Limbong, Turita Indah Setyani, R. Cecep Eka Permana

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This study aims to examine carita pantun performances in ritual contexts as observed in the Baduy community in Kanekes Village, Banten, on several occasions between 2021 and 2023. Carita pantun serves as traditional epics narrated in oral tradition performances accompanied by kacapi musical instruments. Historically, carita pantun was fully integrated into the ritual calendar and performed regularly in various regions in Tatar Sunda including West Java and Banten. Over time, it has been increasingly narrated for secular entertainment. This study explores carita pantun performances that retain a sacred function and remain deeply integrated into the life of the Baduy community. …

Transformed Images Of Women In A Sundanese Magazine; A Corpus Linguistics Perspective, Susi Yuliawati 2025 Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia

Transformed Images Of Women In A Sundanese Magazine; A Corpus Linguistics Perspective, Susi Yuliawati

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In this paper, I examine the evolving portrayal of women in Sundanese society through a close analysis of certain nouns denoting women in the magazine Manglé. Using corpus linguistics, specifically word frequency and collocation analyses, I aim to investigate the evolving images of Sundanese women in relation to Indonesia’s political context over time. I argue that the evolution shown can be seen as a detailed overview of how the images of Sundanese women have been transformed. The results indicate that the trend in constructing women’s images is predominantly through the use of the noun wanoja, in contrast to …

Sundanese "Kecap Anteuran" From The Perspective Of Japanese Onomatopoeia, Yuyu Yohana Risagarniwa, Hera Meganova Lyra, Rahmat Sopian 2025 Padjadjaran University

Sundanese "Kecap Anteuran" From The Perspective Of Japanese Onomatopoeia, Yuyu Yohana Risagarniwa, Hera Meganova Lyra, Rahmat Sopian

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

One of the distinctive features of the Sundanese language is the use of Kecap Anteuran (KA), or verb intensifiers. This linguistic feature often poses challenges when translating Sundanese into foreign languages, particularly European languages. However, we argue that Sundanese KA demonstrates a higher degree of translatability into Japanese, a language that also uses verb intensifiers similar to those found in Sundanese. In Japanese, words analogous to Sundanese KA are categorized as giongo-gitaigo, although the term onomatope is more commonly used. This study aims to identify Sundanese KA based on Tamori’s classification of Japanese onomatopoeia. Using a descriptive-qualitative approach, we …

Sundanese "Kitāb" Printed In Early-Twentieth-Century Egypt As Evidence Of Islamic Transregional Networks, Jajang A. Rohmana 2025 UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, Indonesia

Sundanese "Kitāb" Printed In Early-Twentieth-Century Egypt As Evidence Of Islamic Transregional Networks, Jajang A. Rohmana

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article will focus on Sundanese literacy as observed in the Islamic transregional networks established between the Middle East and West Java in the early twentieth century. Sundanese kitāb printed in Egypt by three Sundanese ulama reflect an increasingly intensive use of the Sundanese language in Islamic teaching in West Java compared to the earlier predominant use of Javanese. There is also a shift on the part of Sundanese ulama from manuscript to print culture. This shift corresponds to the increasing number of pilgrims and Malay-Indonesian students, including those from West Java, in Mecca and the consequent increasing demand for …

"Talaqqi" In The Age Of Bureaucracy; Symbiosis Of Pedagogical Cultures In West Javanese "Pesantren", Julian Millie 2025 School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics Faculty of Arts, Monash University, Australia

"Talaqqi" In The Age Of Bureaucracy; Symbiosis Of Pedagogical Cultures In West Javanese "Pesantren", Julian Millie

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Since Indonesian independence, the Republic’s Ministry of Religion has steadily become more deeply involved in the overseeing and monitoring of the country’s internally diverse system of Islamic education. This involvement has changed the pedagogical texture of Islamic education. The bureaucratized education system of the modern nation state aims to achieve policy goals such as quality at scale, equality of access, and standardization of curricula and teacher qualifications. In contrast, many Islamic institutions, and especially the pesantren (Islamic boarding school), structure their pedagogy around spiritual and genealogical hierarchies, and maintain teaching methods that affirm those hierarchies. This research asks about the …

Contemporary Sundanese Quran; A Departure Or Divine Proximity?, Taufiq Hanafi 2025 Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel

Contemporary Sundanese Quran; A Departure Or Divine Proximity?, Taufiq Hanafi

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Sundanese are deeply immersed in Islam, as exemplified by the adage, “to be Sunda is to be Muslim”. An important initiative within this cultural-religious context is the translation of the Quran into low vernacular Sundanese, departing from the formal and codified language forms of the original. Despite concerns about potential textual transgression, this translation negotiates linguistic barriers and reinforces cultural identity within the Islamic framework. This paper examines the contemporary Sundanese translation of the Quran, Ayat Suci Lenyepaneun (1989), and argues that its use of low colloquial Sundanese not only enhances the Quran’s legibility but also establishes an immediate …

Children Of Patanjala; Revisiting The Problem Of Baduy Origins Using Old Sundanese And Old Javanese Sources, Aditia Gunawan 2025 National Library of Indonesia

Children Of Patanjala; Revisiting The Problem Of Baduy Origins Using Old Sundanese And Old Javanese Sources, Aditia Gunawan

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Various theories regarding the origins of the Baduy people have been discussed by scholars. A recent contribution by Robert Wessing and Bart Barendregt (2005) approaches the problem from the broader context of the structure of kingdoms in Java and Pajajaran. The present paper assesses their theory in the light of documentary sources from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, not only in the Sundanese language but also in Old Javanese. These sources indicate that the religious aspects of Baduy society reflect practices and ideas that seem to have been widespread in early Java and Bali. My approach is to investigate …

Secrets Of A Beautiful Woman; R. Tjandrapradja’S "Wawacan Rusiah Nu Geulis": A Morality Tale From West Java, Wendy Mukherjee 2025 Australian National University

Secrets Of A Beautiful Woman; R. Tjandrapradja’S "Wawacan Rusiah Nu Geulis": A Morality Tale From West Java, Wendy Mukherjee

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Raden Tjandra Pradja’s Wawacan rusiah nu geulis (The verse tale of the secrets of a beautiful woman) which was published in 1921 is a verse narrative of high literary merit. A tale of sexual morality, it is an early example of the realist fiction which was to develop during the first half of the twentieth century in the Sundanese language of West Java. The work carries an unusual and intricately woven sub-text telling of ethnic and cultural tension in Bandung, the provincial capital, through the representation of non-Sundanese figures – Hadhrami Arabs and cosmopolitan foreign Muslims. An Arab, Sheikh Abubakar …

A Translation Of And Commentary On Yus R. Ismail’S Short Story “Assalamualaikum…”, C.W. Watson

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Yus R. Ismail is a prolific Sundanese short story writer whose stories regularly appear in Sundanese journals and newspapers. This story “Assalamualaikum…“ appeared in Pikiran Rakyat in August 2023. It is a characteristic story of his in that it takes as its starting point the everyday lives of Sundanese villagers, and yet at the same time creates an aura of mystery around their activities. Some brief introductory information is given on the origins of the Sundanese short story in the early twentieth century and its subsequent development up to the present. A translation of the story given parallel to the …

Beyond The Sitcom: An Examination Of Grief In Wandavision, Victoria Sweeney

Research Days

Television shows are often a medium people turn to for relaxation. However, on rare occasions, certain shows can take on deeper meaning and symbolism. WandaVision, though rooted in superhero media, is one such show that transcends its genre. While television often serves as an escape from reality, the context of the COVID-19 pandemic heightened the show's nostalgic presentation, resonating with viewers on a more profound level. Throughout the series, viewers witness Wanda Maximoff's journey through the stages of grief. As a result, many viewers can relate to her experience, finding their own sense of healing as they progress through these …

Murder On Music Row: A Narrative Analysis Of Mass-Mediated Country Music And Independent Texas Red Dirt Music, Jennifer A. Worley 2025 University of Texas at Tyler

Murder On Music Row: A Narrative Analysis Of Mass-Mediated Country Music And Independent Texas Red Dirt Music, Jennifer A. Worley

Communication Theses

This project employs Roland Barthes' narrative codes as a framework for textual analysis to examine the underlying structures and meanings within song lyrics from two contrasting traditions of country music: mass-mediated Nashville country and Texas Red Dirt. With a sample spanning a five-year period, the study explores how narrative forms reflect broader socio-cultural dynamics and economic forces. Drawing upon the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, particularly the works of Theodor Adorno and Karl Marx, the project concentrates on the commodification of cultural products and implications for authenticity and truth in cultural expression. Through a comparative analysis, the research reveals …
