Queer Is Here, Hopefully To Stay: The Incorporation And Reception Of Lgbtq+ History At The History Colorado Center, Madeline Ohaus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Historically, the documentation of LGBTQ+ histories, struggles, and accomplishments has been absent from museum collections and exhibitions. Scholars argue that given the authoritative nature of museums and their influence on the public, exclusions of LGBTQ+ history can mount to institutional erasure of queer identities. However, in the past decade, there has been an increase in attempts to document and curate exhibitions highlighting and encouraging the public to engage with LGBTQ+ history. While this history is imperative to preserve and display, it can be met with controversy, leading some LGBTQ+ history exhibitions to be relocated or even removed. During the summer …

'They Were Known Accordingly’: The Journey Of The Land Otter Pole And Memorial Pole At The Denver Art Museum, Penske Stranger Mccormack
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 2019, two Kaigani Haida (Alaskan Haida) totem poles (Xaadas Gyáa’ang) were re-raised in the renovated Northwest Coast gallery of the Denver Art Museum. Lee Wallace and his family, descendants of Haida carver Dwight Wallace and Dwight’s son John Wallace, led a ceremony that publicly acknowledged the Wallace family’s connection to the two poles, reintroduced Haida cultural protocols into their care and viewing, and set the stage for future collaborations between the museum and family. This study explores the history of the poles and the intersecting forces that shaped their journey from Sukkwan, Alaska, to Denver, including shifting ideals of …

Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Three-dimensional (3D) scanning and 3D printing of natural history specimens presents interesting opportunities for informal and formal science education, as well as specimen preservation and display. Museum staff in several museums have begun scanning and making specimens available online. However, very few mineral specimens are available as scanned 3D objects, because minerals present unique challenges in scanning. Specifically, their variable surface reflection properties (“luster”) and surface complexities make them complicated specimens to reproduce. This paper examines the variables involved in 3D scanning and 3D printing mineral specimens, lays out criteria for ideal candidates, and presents workarounds to common problems. In …

The Colonial Quarter is a living history venue of Spanish and British colonial heritage in St. Augustine, Florida. Since 1966, the site has housed interpretive structures and programming related to St. Augustine’s colonial history. Over time, management of the site has fallen under the purview of the state of Florida, the city of St. Augustine, and the University of Florida Historic St. Augustine (UFHSA) Direct Support Organization, which functions as a managing agency for the state. In 2013, the UFHSA Board entered into a public-private partnership with the Colonial Quarter, LLC. This marks the first instance of private sector involvement …

El Refugio De La Imagen Chamánica En El Mundo Malagana, Sonia Blanco, Catalina Simmonds Caldas
Segundo congreso internacional de iconografía precolombina. Barcelona, 2023. Actas.

Analysis Of The Integration Of High-Tech Virtual Technology To Improve The Audience's Experience: Taking China Exhibition Hall As Examples, Zizhou Guo
MA Theses
The existence of an exhibition hall is nothing more than to display the works of art, and the design of an exhibition hall is nothing more than to let the audience better understand the works of art. In order to do this well, the design of exhibition space, as a container for artworks, plays an important role. This paper starts with the exhibition space of the exhibition hall, analyzes some new features and existing problems of the exhibition space of the contemporary exhibition hall, and takes space scale, space sequence, exhibition and display methods, and multimedia as the research objects. …

The Application And Impact Of Digital Technology In Jewelry Art, Lai Tai
MA Theses
Since the invention of the first electronic computer in 1946, digital technology
has gone through three stages: the computer, the Internet, and a new-generation of information technology. The form of digitalization has different background and
environment, and the meaning explained is also different. The digitalization of
specific affairs is actually in a narrow sense, while the digitalization of enterprises and organizations is mostly in a broad sense. Digital technology has a big feature, which is that it can let you leave the physical world and come to the digital world. The digital technology revolution promotes the digital transformation of mankind. …

MA Theses
Exploring the importance of the protection and preservation of Australian Aboriginal
cultural heritage, this thesis seeks to examine a need for change in the way
governments approach cultural heritage repatriation from a legal and ethical
perspective. By analyzing binding and non-binding laws of the United Kingdom and
Australia, this paper suggests the need for the improvement of legal frameworks and legislation currently in place regarding cultural heritage repatriation. It also identifies challenges Indigenous communities face in the quest to reclaim control over their cultural heritage, history, and identity. Examining contrasting case studies of repatriation, the impact legislation has on the …

Postcolonial Museums And National Identity In Vietnam, Reese W. Hollister
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
Following the Vietnam Wars, the nation of Vietnam used museums to construct its identity for both national and international audiences. This paper first investigates the colonial origins of Vietnam's museum landscape, stemming from French ethnographic museums in colonial Indochina. Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origins and Spread of Nationalism then serves as the theoretical framework to understand Vietnamese nation's collective, historical memory of the French and American Wars. This paper concludes that the Vietnamese national identity is based on the shared trauma and socialist solidarity that arise from anti-colonial resistance. Museums both construct and preserve this national identity, …

Communal Appropriation: Considerations Of Heritage And Cultural Preservation, Nikia Chaney
CGU Theses & Dissertations
While cultural appropriation is widely taken as a negative phenomenon that should be avoided, aspects of cultural appropriation are desirable for cultural preservation and heritage. These aspects can expand upon a museum's function by fostering an authentic connection to the community that would enhance the exhibition of cultural artifacts with authenticity, sustainability, diversity, and accessibility. This paper interprets auto-ethnographical visits to two sites, the Watts Tower Community Center in Los Angeles, CA, and the Fairfield House in Bath, England as a way of understanding community appropriation. Both the Watts Tower Community Center and the Fairfield House are inhabited by black …

The prevalence of virtual museums has grown in recent years and this relatively new exhibition format has presented the museum field with opportunities for growth. In an effort to explore the virtual sphere as an effective avenue for museum growth and change, I conduct an analysis of what virtual museums are, the challenges they pose, and the benefits they can provide to museum education. Case studies of University of California Chico, University of New Mexico, University of Arizona, and University of Nevada Reno’s virtual exhibition of materials from each university’s anthropology collections serves to further the exploration of the efficacy …
