This study explores the depictions of women in Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala’s chronicle titled, El primer nueva crónica y buen gobierno. By concentrating on six distinct portraits within this manuscript, the findings intend to reveal the themes, differences, and symbolic meanings that characterize and differentiate these representations. The analysis delves into how these portrayals provide insights into the roles, status, and societal perceptions of women in Inca society during the colonial period. In New York City, only three out of ten Latinos diagnosed with depression receive treatment, compared to over half of white adults with the same condition, according to the latest Department of Health report. Despite the clear need for mental health care, access remains limited, with a lack of culturally competent services further widening the gap.

While mental health has become a more open topic in recent years, many Latinos still face significant barriers to therapy, including high costs, limited insurance coverage, cultural stigma, and disconnects between patients and providers. The Hispanic and Latino populations are the largest ethnic minority in California, and more than 10.4 million Californians consider Spanish their first language. However, English is the primary language in most educational and public spaces. This means Spanish-speaking communities have limited access to coastal ecosystems and learning opportunities about coastal areas impacted by climate change and extreme weather, which becomes a barrier to civic engagement, climate advocacy, and local decision-making. During the 2023 summer, we partnered with local climate advocacy organizations and held educational programs at two public beaches in southern California. This paper offers an American perspective on the term Mudéjar, examining debates in the study of American colonial art and architecture from the 20th century to the present day. It delves into the debates surrounding its stylistic classification and the resulting ambiguities associated with linking all geometric forms to Islamic aesthetics. The paper concludes that the current application of the term in architectural studies has overlooked criticisms from visual culture studies, which tend to ignore the constructive and design-specific aspects where Mudéjar might hold greater stylistic legitimacy.

A 55-year research project started searching for the equivalent of the U.S. “Slave Narrative” in Brazil, the American nation that enslaved nearly 50% of the African captives, and has the 2nd largest black population in the world. Delving into the archives of 4 continents and the publications of the “nova historiografia,” revealed Brazil’s unique history of slavery and required the critical abandonment of the U.S. genre to construct the “Narrativa Escravizada Brasileira” sui generi.
