In 1918, a female from Entlebuch, Switzerland who had already been living abroad for several years, including time in the USA,ended her journey with a trip in the United States. The Swiss author Gottfried Keller (1819-1890) was a major figure within the late nineteenth-century German-language literary movement known as "Poetic Reali sm" ("Poetischer Realismus") . The very name of the movement suggested that " Poetic Reali sts" had retouched or revi sed reality by "poetici zing" it. [First paragraph] Gil Renberg has done the field an incredible service with the publication of this monumental and far-reaching study. In the preface, Renberg states that one of his primary goals is to offer scholars a single resource for ancient incubation across the Near Eastern and Classical worlds (XVI). He has done precisely this with an exhaustive treatment of textual and archaeological evidence for incubation, including quotations of relevant texts in both the original language and in translation, alongside complete publication histories. By the end of 1934, Jacques Feyder had led a distinguished career in French silent cinema, had directed a critically acclaimed adaptation of Émile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin (1928) in Berlin, had returned from a three-year contract in Hollywood, had brought Le Grand Jeu to the screen (the greatest box-office success of the 1933–34 season), and appeared to be virtually unstoppable as he proceeded to direct his next film, Pension Mimosas. In 1971, an Iowa road crew accidentally unearthed an unmarked
cemetery. There were twenty-eight skeletons. Twenty-seven belonged to
whites, and state money quickly paid for their reburial. The other, a young
female Indian was packed in a box and shipped off to the University of
Iowa and the state archeologist. A local Indian by the name Running
Moccasins learned of the Incident and demanded that the woman's bones
be returned for proper burial.

This study focuses on the cultural heritage of artisan coastal fishing in the west of Ireland in the 19th century. The town and port of Dingle, County Kerry, offers an important case study on the progress of local development and changing British policies. While there was clearly an abundance of fish, the poverty and the lack of capital for improvements in ports, vessels, gear, education, and transportation, left the fishing industry underdeveloped until well after the 1890s. In addition, a growing rift developed between the traditional farmer-fishermen and the new middle-class capitalist companies. After several royal commissions examined the fishing …

Translator’s Note: For most readers outside of Denmark, the Danish Golden Age begins and ends with Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard. At the time, however, both Andersen and Kierkegaard were outsiders in respect to the dominant cultural circle, that of the actress Johanne Luise Heiberg, her husband Johan Ludvig Heiberg, and his mother Thomasine Gyllembourg. Gyllembourg, along with Steen Steensen Blicher and Bernhard Severin Ingemann, is credited with giving Denmark its first canonical prose fiction. The Bridge
A literary translator ought, as much as possible, take on the voice of the author, or the author’s characters, in much the same way an actor takes on a role in a play. The goal is that the reader forget that the words they are reading have been translated at all. The new work needs to stand on its own as a legitimate work of literature, hopefully bearing successfully the unspoken attitudes and inferences of the original author, but in the new language. The artifice involved ought to be invisible.

It was in the early 1990's that I first met Bob. He was teaching, first as a Soros Foundation Fellow and then as a Fullbright Professor at the Lajos Kossuth University in Debrecen, a city in eastern Hungary. It was only a couple of years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communism. This was a time when it had finally become possible for Hungarians to travel freely in the world, but in practice very few of us were able to afford to do so.
