Foreshadowed Cruelty: Mary Osgood’S Psychopathic Tendencies In Daniel Mason’S North Woods, Winston P. Kauffman

In this essay, I examine the character of Mary Osgood in North Woods by Daniel Mason, arguing that her behavior reflects traits associated with psychopathy. While Mary and her sister Alice initially appear to represent a typical form of sibling rivalry, Mary’s cruelty, emotional detachment, and manipulation suggest something more troubling from the beginning. When Mary ultimately kills Alice, this shocking moment confirms the darker implications that had been subtly foreshadowed throughout the narrative. By drawing on psychological research on empathy deficits and psychopathic traits, I argue that Mary’s actions align with modern understandings of psychopathy. Mason uses this characterization …

This paper explores several representations of pink kryptonite. In Doug Murphy’s animated short film True Colors (2017), Superman (Jason J. Lewis) transforms into a woman when he’s exposed to this substance. This short, as we have shown elsewhere (2025), offers a useful lens for examining the perpetuation and the critique of gender stereotypes in superhero media: Superman may be equally capable regardless of his sex, but the film pokes fun at, rather than celebrates, his transformation. Pink kryptonite rarely appears in the canon. A single panel in Supergirl (2003) has received perhaps the most sustained attention. Tom Ue’s archival work …

The study presented in this chapter foregrounds student voice research and students as participants in identifying locations on our urban research campus where linguistic diversity can be acknowledged and developed as a tool for knowledge-making. Beyond acknowledging the presence of diverse languages and linguistic practices on our urban campus, this study takes steps toward ensuring that linguistic diversity is recognized by faculty and administrators as a rich and active feature of campus life that crosses academic boundaries.

This dissertation proposes an expansive, interspecies definition of performance that uses behavior rather than cognition as the decisive feature and illustrates how such a definition can reshape our approach to theatre and performance history. Using the concept of responsivity, which refers to the embodied and affective ways that humans and non-human animals acknowledge and react to one another, I trace human–animal interactions across a variety of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century performance genres, from the aristocratic stag hunt and entertainments involving trained animals to the plays of Molière and Shakespeare.
