Character Development And The ‘In-Between’, Laxmi Pathak, Wayne Melville May 2023

Character Development And The ‘In-Between’, Laxmi Pathak, Wayne Melville

Critical Humanities

A plethora of discussions have been made on character development since Aristotle’s musings on Eudaimonia. These musings have led to multiple perspectives on character development; however, they rarely touch on the area of the ‘in-between,’ a space of tensionality (Aoki 1996) for character development within multi-cultural settings. This article explores the concept of character development, discusses the importance of the language of virtues, critiques the notion of the ‘in-between,’ in connection with home- and host- cultures, and concludes with the implications of the ‘in-between’ within the context of character development in multi-cultural settings. The intent is to explore the ‘in-between’ …

Three Sides To Success: Exploring How Inclusive Partnerships Can Nurture Robust Family And Community Engagement In The Classroom For African-American Students, Orianna Vaughn

Education | Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which conscious family and community partnerships with middle schools can play an integral part of academic achievement for Black children. Family and community engagement play a critical role in a student’s success as support, and knowledge of their scholar’s strengths and interests can be an asset not only in the classroom, but to the scholar’s overall academic success, which can “lead to higher educational aspirations and increased student motivations'' (Bartz, et al. 2017). However, presiding narratives of disengagement and disinterest from Black parents in their scholar’s academic life have …

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Preparing preservice teachers (PSTs) as teachers of writing has gained attention in recent years, but little is known about their preparedness when engaging with student writers over extended periods. We examine PSTs’ preparedness to teach writing within a structured literacy tutoring experience to better understand the skills and knowledge of PSTs related to teaching writing. Results indicate PSTs contextualized writing instruction, considered clients’ affect around writing, and used data to inform writing lessons. PSTs were also grappling with specific pedagogical considerations related to writing instruction, offering implications for teacher educators and researchers.

What Is Inquiry-Based Mathematical Learning?, Suzanne Marie Killian May 2023

What Is Inquiry-Based Mathematical Learning?, Suzanne Marie Killian

2023 Symposium

To make schools accountable for the education and learning they provided for their students, updating the Elementary and Secondary Education Act with the No Child Left Behind Act created a ripple effect of damage to student learning. This kind of pressure on schools and students puts more focus on students getting good grades than focusing on effort. Lack of effort created bad habits and poor study skills, especially in mathematics. Recent studies state that math proficiency in the U.S. is 38% and 50% in Washington state (Public School Review, 2023). This type of learning outcome cries for help on how …

The Impact Of Classroom And Behavioral Management On The Quality And Level Of Learning In Music Education, Matthew Nicholas Farr May 2023

The Impact Of Classroom And Behavioral Management On The Quality And Level Of Learning In Music Education, Matthew Nicholas Farr

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Music classrooms are often larger in class size than other subject areas. Larger class sizes affect discipline, especially in areas where there is only one teacher for the class or where classroom and behavior management is a point of concern. While little research will support the idea that effective classroom and behavior management can impact learning in music education, research does support the idea that lower discipline infractions in a classroom have higher academic achievement results. Classroom management in the band room can be well maintained when there are limited distractions that take the focus off of the instruction. If …

Twice-Exceptional Autism And Home Education: A Phenomenological Analysis, Tiffany Brook Hartman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

It is common for autistic and particularly twice-exceptional (2e) children to be schooled from home at a higher rate than their neurotypical peers. Much of the current research investigating this phenomenon is conducted from the perspective of the public school system. This point of view is generally critical of the curriculum taught in the home, has largely limited parental voices in the literature, and overlooks possible circumstances in the public school system that might have led families to choose to homeschool. This qualitative analysis conducted open-ended interviews of parents with twice-exceptional autistic children who have home-educated or currently educate their …
