Making Connections, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Nov 2011

Making Connections, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

Last summer as instructors at a creative-writing conference, we had an experience that made us better writers. While critiquing a promising piece of fiction, we became frustrated because we couldn't put our finger on why the story didn't quite work. The tale, which centered around a young soldier's baptismal firefight in Vietnam, at first seemed solid. The main character was believable, the setting was described in gritty realism, and the plot had a beginning, middle, and end. But although the story was technically correct, it didn't really capture our interest. We found we couldn't get ...

School Governance : Research On Educational And Management Issues, John Ainley, Phil Mckenzie Jul 2009

School Governance : Research On Educational And Management Issues, John Ainley, Phil Mckenzie

Dr John Ainley

In a number of countries the past 20 years have seen increases decentralisation of authority for a range of decisions to individual schools. A range of arguments has been advanced in support of decentralisation but a common belief is that shifting authority to schools will enhance the quality, effectiveness and responsiveness of public education. This paper argues decentralisation is not a unitary concept and can be applied to different elements of the teaching and learning environment: curriculum organisation, financial management, personnel management and resource allocation. Research that has investigated the impact of decentralisation itself on student learning outcomes has not ...

Seeing The Students Behind The Stereotypes: The Perspective Of Three Preservice Teachers, Alison Cook-Sather, Ondrea Reisinger Dec 2000

Seeing The Students Behind The Stereotypes: The Perspective Of Three Preservice Teachers, Alison Cook-Sather, Ondrea Reisinger

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

Stereotypes are a particularly insidious factor in the formation of pre‐ and in‐service teachers’ images of students. Teachers who rely on stereotypes rather than try to see the students behind them run the risk of letting cultural and individual biases work to their own disadvantage and to the disadvantage of the next generation of high school students. This article describes a project called Teaching and Learning Together that brings preservice teachers into direct dialogue with high school students with the goal of helping preservice teachers learn to attend to high school students and analyze the pedagogical implications of that ...

In Search Of Aesthetic Space: Delaying Intentionality In Teaching/Learning Situations, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta Dec 2000

In Search Of Aesthetic Space: Delaying Intentionality In Teaching/Learning Situations, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta

Faculty Publications: Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education

Aesthetic considerations are qualitative, personal, and value laden and do not fi t well into existing educational frameworks. Yet, I think greater aesthetic awareness is a pragmatic and philosophical necessity missing in much schooling. An aesthetic context calls for a rethinking and revaluing of what is educationally important. Th is paper explores such possibilities along with the concrete implications of taking aesthetic considerations seriously, within a school setting. Opened in September, 1997, the Creative Arts Centre, Milton Williams School, Calgary Board of Education, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, has chosen to value the creating process, primary to the arts, within the school ...
