Exploring Incivility Among Nursing And Health Science Students: A Descriptive Study, Diane Louise Smith
Exploring Incivility Among Nursing And Health Science Students: A Descriptive Study, Diane Louise Smith
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Incivility has infiltrated our institutions of higher learning as well as the world of nursing. All too familiar in nursing is the phrase “eating their young,” which aptly describes how nurses treat other nurses, even though they should be nurturing and caring professionals.
The investigator explored nursing and health science students’ perceptions of student and faculty uncivil behaviors within the academic environment, seeking the levels and frequency of the problem. Bandura’s social learning theory presents a sound theoretical framework for this dissertation. The research methodology consisted of a quantitative descriptive approach. The Incivility in Higher Education-Revised (IHE-R) Survey was used …
College As Capability Enhancement, Cristina Lee
College As Capability Enhancement, Cristina Lee
CMC Senior Theses
In this thesis I wanted to apply the Sen’s framework in Development as Freedom to college campuses. In my experience at Claremont McKenna College, I have seen how some students are able to take advantage of the resources better than others. Given that we were all accepted by the same admissions office, I always questioned why did some students know how to take advantage of the system. In order to explore this, I first discuss Sen’s capability approach. Then, I show how the capability approach is more comprehensive than social networking theory and William Deresiewicz’s account on elite colleges. Finally, …
Why That? An Ecological Perspective Of Ell Teachers’ Professional Development, Brian C. Rose
Why That? An Ecological Perspective Of Ell Teachers’ Professional Development, Brian C. Rose
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
This article aims to identify the influences which affect the professional development choices of teachers who work with English language learners. Through a qualitative analysis of the experiences of four teachers in four different schools in two school districts, the professional development choices of these teachers are seen as a response to particular institutional forces. These influences mediate the teachers’ choices for professional learning and include concerns related to the classroom, the school site, the district, and the legislative arena. Ultimately, this study provides guidance for teachers trying to identify the specific roles and responsibilities they embody in their schools …
Effects Of Environment On Depressive Symptoms On Chinese Left-Behind Children, Lanyan Ding, Eric S. Buhs
Effects Of Environment On Depressive Symptoms On Chinese Left-Behind Children, Lanyan Ding, Eric S. Buhs
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
Estimates indicate that about 70 million children in China have been left behind in their hometowns by one or both parents as their parents migrate to other places for work opportunities. However, the potential impact of parental migration on the emotional well-being of left-behind children is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine depression levels in Chinese left-behind children and to identify potential risk factors contributing to depressive symptoms in this population. Using a nationally-representative, stratified sample from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) database (3019 children, ages 10-15), an HLM model was applied at 1) the …

A Study Of Kentucky School District Websites: They’Re Colorful And Informative….But Are They Ada Compliant?, John A. Huss, Shannon Eastep
Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children
An often-overlooked component of a school district website is the necessity for that website to be accessible to those with disabilities, while following the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Workforce Rehabilitation Act. This study investigated the accessibility of school district websites in Kentucky by selecting a random sample of 50 school districts and analyzing their home pages using WAVE (Web Accessibility Versatile Evaluator), which reports accessibility violations by annotating a copy of the page that was evaluated and presenting embedded icons and indicators to disclose breaches with ADA. Out of 50 districts, …

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children
This quantitative study utilized a causal-comparative research design to determine the difference in efficacy between teacher made special education referrals in Appalachian and non-Appalachian schools of Kentucky. Data were provided from the 2014-2015 academic year. A total of 109 Kentucky schools provided data for the study. This study will help educators better understand multi-disciplinary referrals for special education as they relate to referral efficacy as based upon student qualification rates. This quantitative study determined the difference between special education qualification rates for teacher made referrals in Appalachian and non-Appalachian schools in the state of Kentucky.
Addressing Reading Fluency Of Students With Intellectual Disabilities Using A Multiple Probe Design, Sarah N. Merimee
Addressing Reading Fluency Of Students With Intellectual Disabilities Using A Multiple Probe Design, Sarah N. Merimee
Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children
Despite making up less than one percent of the student population, students with significant intellectual disabilities have the same rights to receive the best education possible as their typical peers. There is currently a paucity of research regarding effective reading instruction within a comprehensive approach, particularly in the area of reading fluency. The purpose of this study was to investigate if there was a functional relation between repeated reading and choral reading and the words correct per minute of six high school students with significantintellectual disabilities. Additionally, the extent to which fluency impacts reading comprehension was also examined. Five of …

Inquiry-Based Learning: Emirati University Students Choose Whatsapp For Collaboration, Robyn Albers, Christina Davison, Bradley Johnson
Inquiry-Based Learning: Emirati University Students Choose Whatsapp For Collaboration, Robyn Albers, Christina Davison, Bradley Johnson
All Works
Considerable research has shown the value of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) regarding student engagement and motivation, depth of learning, and cognitive flexibility. Student collaboration is one component of this approach, since students must communicate and work together inside and outside of class time when engaging with an IBL project. Choosing a mobile learning tool can benefit student collaboration in so far as the tool enables anytime/anywhere collaborative learning. This study looked at how 118 Emirati undergraduate students in a government-sponsored university in the United Arab Emirates chose to collaborate in an IBL semester-long assignment. Unlike some approaches that dictate the technology …
