Clear-Sighted Statistics, Edward Volchok

Open Educational Resources

Clear-Sighted Statistics is an open-access introductory statistics textbook that can be read for free on computers, tablets, and smart phones.

The title Clear-Sighted Statistics stems from a simple observation: When we visualize data, the results of our analyses become apparent.

Throughout Clear-Sighted Statistics, data visualization is used to help you clearly see how to analyze the data and make the results of your analyses clear. In addition, Microsoft Excel—a great charting tool—is used to demonstrate some of the statistical techniques that are often ignored in an introductory statistics course: Effect Size, Statistical Power, the probability of a Type ...

Homo Ludens Moralis: Designing And Developing A Board Game To Teach Ethics For Ict Education, Damian Gordon, Dympna O'Sullivan, Ioannis Stavrakakis, Andrea Curley

Conference papers

The ICT ethical landscape is changing at an astonishing rate, as technologies become more complex, and people choose to interact with them in new and distinct ways, the resultant interactions are more novel and less easy to categorise using traditional ethical frameworks. It is vitally important that the developers of these technologies do not live in an ethical vacuum; that they think about the uses and abuses of their creations, and take some measures to prevent others being harmed by their work.

To equip these developers to rise to this challenge and to create a positive future for the use ...

A collaborative system design initiative at the University for Business and Technology in Kosovo aims to make local knowledge visible and to enhance local knowledge creation, within the university and throughout the country. Since its inception in 2015, design activities aimed to activate systems through modeling the global knowledge landscape, technology enabled systems, and human activity processes. Within the framework of Informed Systems, application of Informed Learning theory and Information Experience Design (IXD) guided prototyping systems that informed building an institutional repository named UBT Knowledge Center. The knowledge vision anticipates that sustained curation, organization, discovery, access, and usage processes will ...

Weapons Of Mass Creation, Andrew Monterroso

Academic Excellence Showcase Proceedings

What are math wars? Why do they exist? This is a disagreement created by those who decide how we educate students. With this ongoing war on math, we have undoubtedly created ways to improve our ways of student learning. In my poster, I will be introducing the effects on students from math wars and ways we can counteract them to benefit student learning. I will also be examining helpful tools like project-based learning, the communicative approach, and mixed-attainment grouping that we can use to improve student learning capabilities.

Developing Sophisticated Reasoning Through Experiential Cognitive Dissonance, Leslie Mclane May 2020

Developing Sophisticated Reasoning Through Experiential Cognitive Dissonance, Leslie Mclane

Academic Excellence Showcase Proceedings

In Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, equilibration promotes increasingly complex forms of thought. When children encounter new events that they can interpret and respond to using either actions or thoughts (schemes), they experience equilibrium. Children assess schemes as they learn from experiences, modifying and forming new schemes through the process of assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation is when children can respond to and possibly interpret events in a way that is consistent with existing schemes, while accommodation requires modification or the formation of a new scheme (Ormrod, 2016). As children age, they increasingly meet situations in which their current ...

Decolonizing Inclusive Education: A Collection Of Practical Inclusive Cds- And Discrit-Informed Teaching Practices, Brent Elder May 2020

Decolonizing Inclusive Education: A Collection Of Practical Inclusive Cds- And Discrit-Informed Teaching Practices, Brent Elder

College of Education Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, we present a collection of decolonizing inclusive practices for elementary education that we have found effective when implementing them in postcolonial countries. The choice and implementation of such practices was informed by the intersectional and interdisciplinary theoretical framework of Critical Disability Studies (CDS) and Disability Critical Race Theory in Education (DisCrit), and guided by decolonizing methodologies and community-based participatory research (CBPR). The main purpose of this paper is to show how critical theoretical frameworks can be made accessible to practitioners through strategies that can foster a critical perspective of inclusive education in postcolonial countries. By doing so ...
