Public Education For Democracy: Teaching Immigrant And Bilingual Children As Equals, Luis E. Poza, Sheila M. Shannon
Public Education For Democracy: Teaching Immigrant And Bilingual Children As Equals, Luis E. Poza, Sheila M. Shannon
Faculty Publications
This theoretical essay offers a genealogical analysis (Foucault, 1975) that problematizes the idea of “public” with respect to schooling immigrant and bilingual students. “Public” has been reconfigured in ways that privilege hegemonic whiteness, resulting in policies and practices such as standardized testing, for example, that primarily evaluate, sort, and penalize (Foucault, 1975) schools serving these students. We contend that testing’s pernicious impacts stem from a raciolinguistic project of American identity (Flores & Rosa, 2015). Educators, adapting to the tests (Freire, 1974), cement linguistic and racial hierarchies. Referencing classrooms from our teaching and empirical work, we argue for teacher education that …

Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
A 1981 report on an investigation undertaken partly to procure data for the classification of public lands located in the Salinas Valley-Parkfield area of California withdrawn from entry pending classification, and partly to determine areas in which the geologic conditions were favorable for oil prospecting so as to prevent useless expenditures in drilling dry holes in unfavorable areas. The work on which the report was based was done during the field seasons of 1915 and 1916.

Is A Country’S Aggregate Income Related To Its Level Of Happiness?, Alexis Crispin, Sam Schreyer
Is A Country’S Aggregate Income Related To Its Level Of Happiness?, Alexis Crispin, Sam Schreyer
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
The Easterlin paradox suggests that a greater level of economic prosperity does not translate into more happiness for a society. We investigate this paradox using a methodology new to this literature called quantile regression (QR) analysis. We find evidence that aggregate income is statistically related to a nation’s average level of happiness, but (i) the magnitude of this relationship is relatively modest, and (ii) greater levels of income bring about smaller and smaller increases in a nation’s happiness. These results provide a more nuanced understanding of the empirical support for and against the Easterlin paradox.

Electronic Properties Of A New Photosensitizer-Dye Derived From A Cadmium Selenide Mediated Retinoid/Carotenoid-Based Complexes Of Rhenium (I), Fred M. Schertz Ii, Runfan Yang, Amelia Richter
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
Two new inorganic-based photosensitizer dyes of rhenium(I) attached to retinoid/carotenoid ligands have been synthesized. All ligands were prepared via Knoevenagel condensation reactions of all-trans-retinal (1) and β-apo-8’- carotenal with cyanopyridyl. Electronic UV/Visible absorption spectroscopy shows that these complexes absorb visible light efficiently. Absorption wavelengths are in the 450 nm to 600 nm range. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the frontier molecular orbitals involved during absorption process occur from the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) to low-energy LUMOs (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) of the Re metal center. Theoretical treatments also show that these orbitals are located primarily on the …

Clement And Linda Mcgillicuddy Humanities Center Spring 2018 Report, Clement And Linda Mcgillicuddy Humanities Center
General University of Maine Publications
The Clement and Linda McGillicuddy Humanities Center promotes a broad spectrum of human culture through programs that aim to foster intellectual curiosity, critical reflection and creative innovation. It serves as a locus for humanities research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and meaningful conversations among scholars, artists, students and the public.
Central to the center’s mission is the belief that study of the humanities cultivates compassion across differences, develops empathy, and, in addition to providing a sound training in critical thinking, develops the emotional and intellectual agility needed to brilliantly navigate an increasingly interconnected and complex global landscape.
The center supports lectures, symposia, discussion …

Teacher Education Program Redesign: Maintaining A Focus On Social Justice In An Increasingly Challenging Context, Grinell Smith, Colette Rabin
Teacher Education Program Redesign: Maintaining A Focus On Social Justice In An Increasingly Challenging Context, Grinell Smith, Colette Rabin
Faculty Publications
This qualitative case study describes the outcomes of a major reorganization of a well-established five semester post-baccalaureate combined credential/MA program into a three semester program. The original program focused squarely on social justice and multicultural awareness; reorganization was driven entirely by external forces, many of which the department faculty viewed as anathema to our larger purposes as educators that are based on deficit-models of diversity, ignore relational aspects of teaching, and are at the heart of efforts to privatize teacher education. Reorganization involved heavy reliance on “touchstone texts,” immersive field experiences, and student action-inquiry centered on making theory to practice …

Using Random Forests To Describe Equity In Higher Education: A Critical Quantitative Analysis Of Utah’S Postsecondary Pipelines, Tyler Mcdaniel
Using Random Forests To Describe Equity In Higher Education: A Critical Quantitative Analysis Of Utah’S Postsecondary Pipelines, Tyler Mcdaniel
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
The following work examines the Random Forest (RF) algorithm as a tool for predicting student outcomes and interrogating the equity of postsecondary education pipelines. The RF model, created using longitudinal data of 41,303 students from Utah's 2008 high school graduation cohort, is compared to logistic and linear models, which are commonly used to predict college access and success. Substantially, this work finds High School GPA to be the best predictor of postsecondary GPA, whereas commonly used ACT and AP test scores are not nearly as important. Each model identified several demographic disparities in higher education access, most significantly the effects …
A Blend Of Absurdism And Humanism: Defending Kurt Vonnegut’S Place In The Secondary Setting, Krisandra R. Johnson
A Blend Of Absurdism And Humanism: Defending Kurt Vonnegut’S Place In The Secondary Setting, Krisandra R. Johnson
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
This essay argues that Kurt Vonnegut blends a unique humanist stance into his absurdist plots and characters, ultimately urging readers to confront the absurd with a kindness and human decency his protagonists often find rare. As a result of this absurd and humanist synthesis, I defend and promote Vonnegut’s place in the secondary English curriculum, despite his rank on many banned books lists, since his characters’ journeys correlate thematically with the growth and process of postmodern adolescents and encourage moral responsibility without sentimental manipulation.
Focusing on Cat’s Cradle, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, and Slaughterhouse-Five as primary sources, specifically …
Allopathic Medicine’S Influence On Indigenous Peoples In The Kumaon Region Of India, Eliana M. Blum
Allopathic Medicine’S Influence On Indigenous Peoples In The Kumaon Region Of India, Eliana M. Blum
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper focuses on the use of western medicine in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India. The goal of this research is to understand which healing practices are preferable in rural villages. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 53 participants, including two spiritual healers, two doctors, and one pharmacist. Results indicate that allopathic medicine, otherwise known as modern medicine or western medicine, has become the go-to remedy for even the most remote people in India. Nearly all participants use allopathic medicine, but less than half of the participants experiment with other forms of healing, such as Ayurveda, homeopathy, meditation, and yoga. …

A Community's Collective Courage: A Local Food Cooperative's Impact On Food Insecurity, Community And Economic Development, And Local Food Systems, Tabitha C. Barbour
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
According to the USDA’s “Food Security Status of U.S. Households” in 2014, 48.1 million people live in food insecure households. In Indiana, more than 1 million people suffer from food insecurity with rates as high as 19.2% of Marion County’s population according to the Map the Meal Gap 2014 report. The Community Controlled Food Initiative (CCFI) is a local food cooperative operated by the Kheprw Institute and neighborhood residents in the Mid-North Indianapolis Community. The cooperative formed to address food insecurity in August 2015 in response to the closing on the local Double 8 Foods grocery stores. CCFI hosts a …
