Sabbatical Summary Statement, Gina Walls Sep 2005

Sabbatical Summary Statement, Gina Walls

Sabbaticals

As a product of the community college myself, I have long been interested in the factors that effect student persistence - in what helps a community college student stay in college. As a Parkland faculty member, I have been interested in developing programs and activities that would improve student persistence. Out of this interest, ORN 101 was created and implemented at Parkland in 1992. ORN 101 (renamed PSY 109 in 2004) is an orientation to college course which includes topics such as goal setting, educational planning, and career and personal development. Reforming Welfare Reform Postsecondary Education Policy: Two State Case Studies In Political Culture, Organizing, And Advocacy, Charles Price

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Welfare reform had the unforeseen effect of causing large numbers of public assistance recipients to drop out of college, discouraging their pursuit and acquisition of postsecondary education (PSE) credentials. There is a growing body of research that shows the value of postsecondary education in getting public assistance recipients onto a path toward occupational and social mobility. The restrictions of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families PSE policy, coupled with the recognition that college participation should be an option for qualified welfare recipients, influenced the emergence of many successful state and county-level movements focused on reforming welfare reform PSE policy. Their work …

Klipsun Magazine

Autumn is the season of transition at Western. A new academic year embarks, and the accompanying anxiety and excitement consumes university life.

New students curiously walk the campus, helping each other navigate the unfamiliar environment. Old friends meet and catch up on the events of summer. Days become shorter, and the colors of Bellingham change.

Klipsun is also in transition. The magazines format has changed to embody shorter features and increased visual content. Inside this issue, readers will discover a great range of transitions that Western students and members of the greater Western community experience.

Academic And Professional Integrity: New Snake Oil In Old Bottles?, Gordon A. Crews Sep 2005

Academic And Professional Integrity: New Snake Oil In Old Bottles?, Gordon A. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

This presentation was given in September of 2005 as Dr. Gordon A. Crews’ presidential address during his year as president of the Southern Criminal Justice Association. It is an overview of the issue of academic and professional integrity, or lack thereof, in higher education. The comparison of academics to “snake oil salesmen” of the past is the central focus of this presentation. The presentation also analyzes the issues of integrity and collegiality in the three traditional areas of academics’ professional lives: teaching, research, and service.
