Alternative Teacher Certification: An Investigation To Determine The Effectiveness Of Alternative Teacher Certification In The State Of Florida According To Principals' Perspective, Nelson Torres

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alternative Certification Programs (ACPs) have been established in 47 states across the country, including Florida, to help alleviate the teacher shortage many public school districts have been experiencing during the last two decades. This teacher shortage has been reported to be more prevalent in areas where fully qualified and committed teachers are most needed. Current literature has identified areas such as inner-city schools, at-risk and minority students, bilingual education, math and physical sciences, and the special education field as the educational areas where the shortage is most significant. Faced with this dilemma, states have instituted ACPs as unconventional ways to …

The Effect Of School Culture On Science Education At An Elementary School: An Ethnographic Case Study, Lori Meier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This ethnographic case study investigated one elementary school to understand how the school's culture influenced its science curriculum design and instruction. The main data was formal and informal semi-structured interviews with key teachers to understand their values, beliefs, practices, materials, and problems with science instruction. To triangulate these data, the researcher observed classroom practice, school-wide activities, and collected artifacts and documents. Data were analyzed using a theoretical framework that emphasizes that culture cannot be reduced to beliefs, values, practices, materials or problems, but rather each aspect of culture is interdependent and mutually reinforcing. The main finding suggests that the school's …

Finding My Breathing Space, Laurie Ann Ballew Jan 2006

Finding My Breathing Space, Laurie Ann Ballew

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

In the winter of 2003, we made our third annual snowshoeing trip to Mt. Baker. During our first adventure freshman year, Greg and I saw the breath-taking views that make Artist Point the popular snowshoeing destination that it is. The sky was glacier- water blue, and not even a thumbprint of a cloud marked the horizon. The following year, the weather was overcast, and our group ended up turning back early. In 2003, we planned to go the weekend after finals before heading home for the Christmas holiday. Greg invited his friend JP along, who had never been snowshoeing. On …

Does The Advertising Effect Of Athletics Impact Academic Rankings?, Brad A. Trenkamp

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The study presented here examines the relationship between athletic success and academic quality among Division I universities. The analysis begins by revisiting models that have been previously examined by other researchers. The current literature is then extended using a new model incorporating academic rankings. The previously used models incorporate objective measures of academic quality. The new model presented here uses rankings which have a subjective input. It is then examined to see whether the subjective opinions present in the academic rankings are influenced by athletic success. The analysis supports the assertion that successful football programs enhance the academic mission of …

A Qualitative Study: Does Anger Elicit Gender Normative Aggressive Reactions?, Austin Beer Jan 2006

A Qualitative Study: Does Anger Elicit Gender Normative Aggressive Reactions?, Austin Beer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Previous research indicates that males primarily use physical aggression and females use relational aggression when angered. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether males are really primarily physically aggressive and if females are primarily relationally aggressive when angered, through qualitative methodology. One group of males and one group of females participated in an online chat room discussion. Groups and individuals discussed situations that angered them and how they responded to being angered. Dialogue was evaluated to answer the question: Do males and females tend to aggress in gender normative manners? Four themes emerged from discussion indicating that these …

Need, Qualifications, Training, Responsibilities, And Supervision Of Paraprofessionals In Special Education : A Qualitative Case Study Approach, Heather L. Marolf

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The increasing number of one-on-one paraprofessionals has intensified interest in issues regarding their appropriate employment. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to determine the perceptions of a paraprofessional assigned to provide one-on-one supports for a student with special needs regarding how the need for paraprofessional assistance was determined, who participated in the selection process, necessary qualifications for employment, assigned roles and responsibilities, training opportunities, and supervision practices. Data was collected through three semi-structured interviews with a one-on-one paraprofessional. Additional themes identified through data analysis included barriers to job performance, job satisfaction, negatives of being a one-on-one paraprofessional, and …

No Child Left Behind (2001) And High Stakes Tests : How They Affect Teachers' Experiences In The Classroom, Emily N. Olson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether No Child Left Behind (2001) and high-stakes tests affect teachers' experiences in the classroom, in areas such as instruction, attitude/anxiety, and job satisfaction. This study also investigates whether teachers in schools labeled "in need of improvement" are affected differently than teachers in schools that are not labeled. Thirty-eight teachers in four urban elementary schools in Iowa who work with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students responded to a 30-question survey that used a 5-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics as well as ANOVA to investigate a possible difference …

Functional Behavioral Assessment : A New Model For Interviewing, Shelley K. Schafer Jan 2006

Functional Behavioral Assessment : A New Model For Interviewing, Shelley K. Schafer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The factors which affect how children learn are as varied as the individual students within any given classroom. These factors can affect not only the academic resilience of the student, but their behavior as well. Problem behaviors that create substantial amounts of tension in the classroom can inhibit the academic success of an individual child, as well as the performance of his or her peers. Some students do not have the appropriate behavioral repertoires necessary to cope with the many academic and social expectations of attending school. The purpose of the current study is to develop and assess the effectiveness …

A Day In The Parc: An Interactive Qualitative Analysis Of School Climate And Teacher Effectiveness Through Professional Action Research Collaboratives, Shannon Lasserre-Cortez Jan 2006

A Day In The Parc: An Interactive Qualitative Analysis Of School Climate And Teacher Effectiveness Through Professional Action Research Collaboratives, Shannon Lasserre-Cortez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the effects Professional Action Research Collaboratives (PARCs) have on several variables including teacher effectiveness, school effectiveness, and school climate. Mixed methods including Interactive Qualitative Analysis and non-parametric Mann Whitney U statistics were used to explore these effects. PARC participation was found to have no significant effect on school climate or teacher effectiveness; however, PARC Schools demonstrated higher school effectiveness scores than Comparison Schools. This project also generated a systems relationship diagram of school climate in PARC schools using Interactive Qualitative Analysis, and this paper offers a criticism of this fledgling method of data collection and analysis. There …

A Delicate Dance: Autoethnography, Curriculum, And The Semblance Of Intimacy, Laura Marshall Jewett

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Have you ever had a dream that you shared an intimate moment—grew close—with someone who in your waking life you barely knew; or that you knew a language that outside of your dream you did not understand? Or if you are a teacher, have you ever dreamt that you connected with a student—actually taught them something? If upon waking you have felt the residual yet potent ephemeral as-ifness of such closeness, you have experienced what is the focus of this study: the semblance of intimacy. This dissertation, via autoethnography, couples experiences teaching multicultural education and learning to zydeco dance in …

Applying Intellectual Development Theory To College Student Drinking, Linda Marie Regira Jan 2006

Applying Intellectual Development Theory To College Student Drinking, Linda Marie Regira

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study evaluates the presence of a relationship between a student’s level of Intellectual Development, as measured by Moore’s Learning Environment Preferences (LEP) test, and harmful drinking behavior in college students. An online survey instrument was sent to a random sample of 3,000 undergraduate students at a large public research-intensive four-year college in the South via student email accounts. The survey instrument included items about student drinking behavior, perception of peer student drinking behavior, and the Learning Environment Preferences Test. The results showed that there is a statistically significant relationship (inverse) between intellectual development and binge drinking behavior, after controlling …
