Young healthy non-Hispanic Black (BL) adults have an attenuated increase in blood flow to working skeletal muscle during exercise compared to non-Hispanic white (WH) adults. Cerebral blood flow also increases during exercise; however, previous work has mainly included WH adults. There are no studies investigating potential differences in cerebral vascular responses to exercise in BL adults. Shaulis et al., (2022) found that walking on a non-motorized treadmill (NMT) elicited greater EMG activity from plantar flexor (PF) muscles compared to walking overground (OG) and on a motorized treadmill (MT). PURPOSE: To compare kinematics, kinetics and EMG in OG, MT, and NMT walking. The use of e-cigarettes (i.e., vaping) has risen dramatically in the last few years. Vaping is more appealing and accessible to young people than traditional smoking. The ease of use can increase the frequency of vaping, which may increase the amount of nicotine consumed. Nicotine is a potent vasoconstrictor that may also affect blood pressure (BP). Indeed, previous studies have shown that traditional cigarette smoking increases BP variability. The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) has ~3x higher rates of diagnosed cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) than the US, which combine to be the leading cause of preventable death in the developed world. Microvascular blood flow (MBF) responses are an early indicator of vascular insulin resistance, and is blunted with obesity, T2D, and those at high risk for T2D. We have previously shown that apparently healthy people in the RGV display impaired MBF responses, helping explain the disparities noted with chronic disease. Family history of hypertension (FHH), being an unmodifiable risk factor, increases probability of developing hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of hypertension in Hispanic/Latino (H/La) males is 50.3%, while it is 48.9% in non-Hispanic white (NHW) males and 57.5% in non-Hispanic black (NHB) males. Among adolescents aged 8 to 17, H/La youth has the highest incidence of hypertension as compared to all other races. It is evident that young normotensive adults with positive family history of hypertension (+FHH) exhibit exaggerated exercise pressor response. Exercise has been shown to produce an anti-inflammatory response and an increased exercise tolerance in heart failure (HF) patients. In rats, monocrotaline (MCT) leads to pulmonary arterial hypertension-induced HF (PAH-HF), resulting in exercise intolerance and chronic inflammation. Heart failure is a common and severe disease that worsens morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. One of the clinical manifestations of heart failure is peripheral muscular atrophy, whose presence impacts the prognosis of heart failure patients. Sublingual sufentanil was developed to reduce pain following a traumatic injury in the field (e.g., battlefield). However, it is unknown whether an analgesic dose of sufentanil affects cardiovascular responses to a painful stimulus in humans. Advanced age is associated with an increase in basal inflammation of the organs. Previously we have found that T cells accumulate in the liver of old mice. A large proportion of these cells are CD8+ and produce inflammatory cytokines. We have previously demonstrated that CD8+ T cell depletion results in improved glucose tolerance in old mice. However, the mechanisms by which CD8+ depletion improves glucose tolerance is unclear. Women have been historically excluded in physiology research due to the assumption that the menstrual cycles influence physiological biomarkers. Research has shown that cortisol concentrations are higher during the follicular phase compared to the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. In addition, morning cortisol concentrations have been shown to be significantly higher in the morning compared to evening. The literature on MT, predominantly observational in nature, remains notably limited within the realm of dance. Body volume (BV) indicates the total 3-dimensional (3D) space an individual occupies. BV is either used alongside body mass in density-based two-compartment models or in conjunction with other body components in multi-compartment models to estimate body composition (BC). BV estimates are typically produced by costly laboratory methods, such as hydrostatic weighing or air-displacement plethysmography (ADP). However, more accessible options are emerging.
