An Experimental Study For The Selection Of A Test Battery For Use In The Screening Interview, Richard Manning Hawes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study is based on the assumption that there is a need for identifying, selecting, counseling, and developing teacher competencies and the recognition of the need for further studies in defining the good teacher. Such studies should contribute to more efficients methods of selecting and preparing teachers. The problem of selecting persons who are apt to make good teachers, and who have a reasonable high potential is of primary importance. By statistically selecting a brief battery of tests from a larger battery, thi study hopes to present the counselors at the College of the Pacific with a practical and usable …

Diagnostic Limitations Of The Draw-A-Person Test With The Mentally Retarded, B. Theodore Blizzard

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The historical survey in Goodenough's Measurement of Intelligence by Drawings reviews this area since 1885 and indicates a continued interest of investigators in many parts of the world in the drawings of children. A recurrent theme suggested in most of the published observations was that some characteristics of the drawings were subject to a developmental process and showed significant maturational changes. More recently, this general feeling has grown to include personality factors as a major aspect of drawing behavior to the point where current emphasis has now shifted from the formal aspects of scoring, necessary in the evaluation of intelligence, …

Relationship Of Personality Characteristics To Scholastic Achievement And Underachievement Of Talented College Students, Marjorie Regina Holmquist Jan 1960

Relationship Of Personality Characteristics To Scholastic Achievement And Underachievement Of Talented College Students, Marjorie Regina Holmquist

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One of the major problems of the modern educational system is scholastic under-achievement by talented students. Until recently the typical study had been chiefly concerned with the correlation between level of ability and academic success, while many studies referred to the presumed relationship between emotional stability and academic achievement. On the college level such characteristics as failure to adjust to college life, poor study habits, lack of awareness of his real level of ability on the part of the student, and other such Causes have been tacitly assumed as the explanation for under- achievement

Personality Differences Between Talented High School Achievers And Underachievers, Martin Leroy Mini

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Today, more than ever before, there is present an increasing emphasis on the part of educators to help the academically talented student develop his scholastic ability to its maximum level. Past experience has shown that there is a large number of talented students who are not achieving scholastically in terms of their apparent intellectual potentials. Research on the differences between achieving and underachieving talented students, has left unanswered many important questions concerned with this area of educational psychology.

A Statistical Analysis Of The Relations Between Interpersonal Perception And Adjustment In Leaders, Stephen Alan Mourer

Student Work

The study of leadership and its relationship to other psychological dimensions has been and continues to be a lively research topic in the field of psychology. The study of leadership raises many important questions that, ultimately, can only be properly answered by controlled experimentation. Who will become a leader? Under what circumstances will he lead? What are the psychological dimensions most commonly related to leadership? What is leadership? Can we train leaders? These questions and many others serve as a continuous challenge to researchers In psychology as well as related disciplines. The Importance of leadership to day was

A Comparative Study Of The Experimental Characteristics Of A Group Of Peptic Ulcer And Non-Ulcer Subjects, Frank George Mullen Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: The research about to be reported is one part of a larger research project being conducted at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. The objective of this research program is to attempt to systematically study psychological factors related to peptic ulcer by means of a behaviorally-oriented approach.

The problem in this study is a comparison of duodenal ulcer patients and a matched control group of non-ulcer subjects on various measures of reported behaviors of important persons in the early lives of the subjects. The major purpose of these comparisons is to generate hypotheses concerning the etiology of peptic …

The Cue Value Of Certain Attributes Of Faces, Joseph William Openshaw Dec 1959

The Cue Value Of Certain Attributes Of Faces, Joseph William Openshaw

Doctoral Dissertations

Of all the objects considered to be members of the broad class of things called "stimuli," undoubtedly the most important subset for the understanding of human behavior is other humans. The present research investigates some aspects of the complex stimulus provided by the appearance of another person and the function of selected dimensions of variation of such stimuli in a learning situation. It is an attempt to produce information regarding the relative effectiveness of certain kinds of cues provided by a person's face, when one is required to learn to respond differently to faces. The importance of research in …

A Longitudinal Study Of The Relations Between Sex, Intelligence, Reading Grade Achievement, And Rate Of Reading Growth From Grades Four Through Eight, Janice M. Ebert

Student Work

Reading has been acknowledged as one of the basic subjects in formal education experience. School administrators, teachers, psychologists, parents, and other interested persons have stressed the urgent demand for such a skill for solving problems, reasoning, and learning. A considerable amount of time, effort, and attention has been devoted to reading in the elementary school. It has a vital place in nearly every aspect of academic endeavor. Unless a child attains a certain facility in reading, his educational progress is hindered. Snedaker and Horn indicated concern when they stated that pupils must obtain from books a vast part of their …

The Role Of Learning In Olfactory Sensitivity, Monroe P. Friedman Aug 1959

The Role Of Learning In Olfactory Sensitivity, Monroe P. Friedman

Doctoral Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: In recent years the psychological literature has reflected an increasing interest in the role of learning in perception. On the theoretical level, this interest is expressed principally by the considerable attention given to two current attempts to account for perceptual learning (Gibson & Gibson, 1955a: Postman, 1955). On the empirical level, the problems of industry and the military have generated a multitude of investigations in this area. These problems range in diversity from the training of military personnel in the identification of aircraft to the training of tasters in the food industry.

The remainder of this chapter will be …

A Comparison Of The Revised Stanford-Binet Scale And The Terman-Mcnemar Test Of Mental Ability With Respect To The Prediction Of Scholastic Achievement, Sanford L. Mcdonald

Student Work

Although more than fifty years have passed since the Frenchmen Alfred Binet and Theophile Simon published the first effective intelligence test, psychological testing has evolved through many stages since that time. There are many different types of psychological tests now, with numerous methods of interpretation. However, through all of this evolution the basic purpose of the tests has remained the same— to measure Individual differences. Just as Binet and Simon's first intelligence test ". . . succeeded in differentiating between children of various age and grade levels and made possible the prediction of the child's progress in school, so psychological …
