Artificial Intelligence Applications For Social Science Research, Megan Stubbs-Richardson, Lauren Brown, Mackenzie Paul, Devon Brenner
Social Science Research Center Publications and Scholarship
Our team developed a database of 250 Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications useful for social science research. To be included in our database, the AI tool had to be useful for: 1) literature reviews, summaries, or writing, 2) data collection, analysis, or visualizations, or 3) research dissemination. In the database, we provide a name, description, and links to each of the AI tools that were current at the time of publication on September 29, 2023. Supporting links were provided when an AI tool was found using other databases. To help users evaluate the potential usefulness of each tool, we documented information …

Determinants Of Social Loneliness And Its Association With Negative Coping Styles, Mark Facey
Determinants Of Social Loneliness And Its Association With Negative Coping Styles, Mark Facey
Research Datasets
The original study linked to this dataset argued that underlying antecedents of social loneliness maintain negative behaviour, whereby it becomes chronic and problematic. Four intrinsic antecedents of social loneliness are examined (Secure and Insecure Attachment, Emotional Regulation Problems – Expressive Suppression, Unclear Self-Concept, and Neuroticism) along with negative (Ignoring and Withdrawing) behavioural coping styles. Attachment type, Neuroticism, and to a lesser extent, Self-Concept Clarity, Expressive Suppression and Withdrawal coping styles may play an important role in averting or predicting Social Loneliness. Behaviourally, those who are higher in Social Loneliness, particularly young adult females, may adopt less Withdrawal coping styles once …

Breath Counting As A Measure Of Sustained Attention In Mindfulness Meditation And Its Effect On Mood, John Clapper, Stephen Ware, Fitria Jong Martinez, Kevin Benitez, Hideya Koshino
Psychology Faculty Publications
A great deal of research is currently being carried out on mindfulness meditation, but most of this research suffers from obvious problems and shortcomings. Particularly lacking are objective, observable measures of mindfulness performance that would make it possible to track long-term improvement while at the same time assuring experimental control during individual sessions. One promising method is the so-called breath counting task (BCT) devised by Levinson et al. (2014), which pairs a button-pressing response with each breath during a meditation-like cognitive task. This study involves two experiments investigating the effects of individual-difference variables such as depression, anxiety, personality (Big 5), …

This Excel document contains an open-source version of the data for “When people estimate their personal intelligence who is overconfident? Who is accurate”, an article to appear in 2021 in the journal Personality and Individual Differences. The file contains data related to two forms of the measure, the “Self-Estimated Personal Intelligence”. The first is a 120 item version of the scale (the SEPI-120; the second is a 16-item version (the SEPI-16). Personal intelligence involves the ability to understand personality in oneself and others. Self-estimated personal intelligence (as contrasted with the actual ability) involves holding opinions of oneself such as “I …
Attitudes And Knowledge Of Autism Spectrum Disorder Among Australian Undergraduate Psychology Students, Tiffany Williamson
Attitudes And Knowledge Of Autism Spectrum Disorder Among Australian Undergraduate Psychology Students, Tiffany Williamson
Research Datasets
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has generated much research interest in recent times due to a soaring increase in diagnosis rates and a movement to recognise ASD as a cognitive style, rather than a cognitive deficit. Psychologists are responsible for the timely and accurate diagnosis of ASD and supporting clients on the spectrum with general mental health care. Undergraduate psychology students may go on to further study to become registered psychologists or choose to pursue other careers in mental health care and support work in which they will likely have contact with members of the autistic community. However, little research into …

Predictors Of Academic Success In Web-Based Courses: Age, Gpa, And Instruction Mode, Elizabeth J. Vella, Elizabeth F. Turesky, Jenni Hebert
Psychology Data
Purpose: Determine whether students enrolled in blended courses achieve higher grades relative to those enrolled in completely online courses. Methods: Mixed models regression evaluated predictors of grade across 2,174 students enrolled in web-based courses at the University of Southern Maine. Results: A significant main effect indicated higher grades amid students enrolled in blended relative to completely online courses. An interaction between GPA and instruction mode revealed students with average GPA or at 1 SD below the mean to earn higher grades in blended courses relative to those offered strictly online. Another interaction between age and instruction mode …

Utilizing Emotionally Responsive Virtual Human Role-Play Simulations To Train Users To Identify, Talk To And Refer Students In Psychological Distress Including Those At-Risk For Suicide: A Meta-Analysis, Glenn Albright, Jesse Davidson, Ron Goldman, Kristen Shockley, Sue Eastgard, Joy Himmel
Publications and Research
Background: The American College Health Association found that over 30% of students reported difficulty in functioning due to feeling depressed, overwhelming anxiety (50%) and anger (36%). Suicide is the second leading cause of death among US adolescents and over half of mental illnesses emerge prior to adulthood. A similar study found that nearly half of student veterans met criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and 46% had suicidal ideation. Left untreated, mental illness can lead to increased absenteeism, lower academic performance, disrupted classroom behaviors and compromises school safety. Educators and students are well positioned to identify and refer students in …
