Relationship Between Resting-State Frontal Alpha Asymmetry And Autism Characteristics Among Neurotypically Developing And Autistic Children And Adolescents, Jarryd Osborne
Theses - ALL
Autism is a heterogenous neurodevelopmental diagnosis associated with deficits in social communication and the presence of repetitive behaviors and sensory differences. While diagnostic criteria are behavioral, these behaviors are thought to arise from atypicalities in the brain. While many studies investigating autism have focused on understanding the neural processes underlying task performance, few have focused on understanding the brain at rest. This is critical, however, as the state of the brain before a stimulus is presented (i.e. its resting state) impacts how it responds to incoming information. Frontal alpha asymmetry, the comparison between alpha frequency power in the left and …

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Faculty Scholarship
In the United States, the 40 colleges of osteopathic medicine and 157 schools of allopathic medicine face challenges in recruiting candidates who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM), and gaps in racial disparity appear to be widening. In this commentary, the authors provide an analysis of the data collected from 8 years of conducting a URiM recruitment and welcoming social events. The event is sponsored by a student special interest group called Creating Osteopathic Minority Physicians Who Achieve Scholastic Success (COMPASS) at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine - New York (TouroCOM-NY). The results of the 8-year data analysis supports the …

Essays On Trade Shocks And Firm’S Location, Dan Zhang
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation analyzes how firms can mitigate the influence of trade shock and benefit from openness and diversification. It is composed of three chapters. Chapter 1 and 2 analyze the impact of U.S. import tariffs on the export value of Chinese firms and the differential response of firms that vary in market sizes outside of the U.S. In Chapter 1, I develop a model assuming fixed capital for each firm and fixed cost of entering into new markets. This model shows that the negative impact of a U.S. tariff on the total export value of Chinese firms exporting to more …

Three Essays On Food Insecurity, Cognition, And Food Assistance In The Context Of Aging And Family Dynamics, Dongmei Zuo
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation consists of three chapters pertaining to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation, food insecurity, cognition impairment, and sibling correlation in SNAP participation over the life course. Participation in SNAP among eligible adults 60 and older is much lower than among the younger population, and rates continue to decline throughout the life course while, at the same time, the risk of cognitive impairment increases. The relationship between food insecurity and health outcomes among adults has garnered increasing attention. Some previous studies found an association between food insecurity and cognition outcomes among older adults. However, they were hampered by not …

Bullying Involvement And Depression Among Youth With Adhd: Is Positive Parenting Protective?, Jessica A. Simmons
Dissertations - ALL
Abstract Background: Youth with attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased independent risk for bullying involvement or depression yet the topic of bullying involvement and depression in ADHD is poorly understood and largely considered without a guiding theoretical framework. Research on the relation between ADHD and bullying is still in its early stages and less is known about the risk and protective factors that may contribute to the development or buffering of depression in these youth. Family factors such as positive parenting promote resilience in children with ADHD, help reduce the risk for youth depression and help to …

Gamification, the incorporation of game design features into non-game environments, has been implemented in a variety of disciplines, including education, sustainability, language learning, and workplace transformation. According to research, workplace gamification enhances employee engagement and productivity. The gaming business has leveraged incentives and motivation to drive behavior and participation. This literature study assesses gamification's potential as a technique for leadership development and competency building. Leadership is characterized by a combination of personality characteristics, knowledge, abilities, and behaviors. Existing leadership competency analysis frameworks include emotional intelligence and taxonomies such as Gallup's "Strengths Finder." Through points, levels, and leaderboards, gamification has been …

Video Games As A Way To Facilitate Leadership Skills And Competency Development, Tianshi Hao, Zhi Yin, Siyuan Chen, Anshu Lal, Jesse Llamas, Michael Llamas
The Scholarship Without Borders Journal
This scoping review examines recent literature on video games and leadership competency development to assess whether gaming can foster leadership development. The study discovered that the popularity of video games has increased and that they have the ability to enhance player leadership and real-world leadership skills. Video games can increase management, social, and creative skills, and their increasing complexity makes them beneficial for the study of leadership. There are existing structures in place for leadership development in the military and in the civilian sector, despite the fact that some studies have demonstrated their potential. This topic is relevant because the …

This study examines the influence of social standing, affluence, and privilege on the formation of leaders. The review of literature synthesizes research including individuals from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and factors that may influence leadership development. Previous research indicates that family socioeconomic situations influence the learning of leadership knowledge, the building of a leadership attitude, and the practice of leadership skills during adolescence, hence influencing the likelihood of becoming an outstanding leader. High-status persons possess leadership-enhancing benefits, such as social capital and privileged knowledge. Nonetheless, relationships, social identity, and congruence also influence the efficacy of leaders. The study concludes that parental …

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the obstacles women experience in leadership development and economic empowerment, mainly in non-Western countries, and to compare them to those in developed nations. The study reviewed current literature in order to identify the hurdles and facilitators for female leadership and economic empowerment. Research suggests unpaid work and gender harassment pose the greatest obstacles to women's leadership and economic development. Mentoring has been proven to promote women's leadership and economic empowerment in both western and non-western countries. The study also examined the function of the economic environment in the growth of women's leadership …

Cultural Influences Of Leadership Curriculum: A Literature Analysis Between Western And Eastern Leadership Curriculum, Siyuan Chen, Zhi Yin, Tianshi Hao, Anshu Lal, Jesse Llamas, Michael Llamas
The Scholarship Without Borders Journal
This literature review seeks to determine how Western and Eastern cultures influence leadership training and curriculum design. According to research, cultural differences may make it difficult to develop a universal leadership curriculum. Due to cultural variations, establishing a universal leadership curriculum might be difficult, and it is most ideal to create a leadership curriculum that fits a specific culture to maximize the efficiency of a leader. Cultural factors such as society structure and dispute resolution continue to influence the desired leadership curriculum and training in target regions. Western leadership has been impacted by growth mentality, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution, …

This study intends to compare the evolution of female leadership in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) area, Asia, and the Western countries. According to data from the International Labour Organization, the COVID-19 epidemic has significantly impacted women's labor force participation globally and expanded the gender gap, with the MENA area being the most affected. There is a well-established global trend of rising female leadership; yet, there are still disparities in the gender composition of leadership between Western countries and other areas, with Western countries having a greater share of female leaders. In the MENA area and Asia, imposed …
Climate Adaptation Plans In Ontario: Small And Medium Municipalities Preparedness For Extreme Weather, Zakary Blomme
Climate Adaptation Plans In Ontario: Small And Medium Municipalities Preparedness For Extreme Weather, Zakary Blomme
Major Papers
Combatting climate change has largely been understood as a matter of federal and provincial jurisdiction and as a result has mostly been executed in a preventative lens. However, the effects of climate change are most significantly felt at the municipal level. As a result, I argue the onus for combatting climate change should switch to the municipalities in order to focus on climate mitigation and adaptation. In fact, many of the larger cities in Ontario such as the City of Windsor have acted on this and created Climate Adaptation Plans to aid in mitigation and adaptation efforts. The larger cities …
Sustainable Futures-Integrating Indigenous Perspectives Into An Environmental Assessment Framework: An Analysis Of The Mauri Model, Anna Bettini
Journal of Environmental Sustainability
The twin concepts of sustainable development and sustainability have been key points in new policies. Nonetheless, only the Western scientific perspective is typically considered, excluding other voices and leading to a very narrow vision of “sustainability”. The following article investigates the benefits to including indigenous knowledge and principles, considering their values rather than limitations and presents two specific case studies using the Mauri Model Decision Making Framework, a tool applied for environmental assessment, seen as a more cultural-friendly sustainable approach.
“He’S In Jail Now And I Don’T Feel Bad”: Analyzing Sureties’ Decisions To Report Bail Violations, Rachel Schumann, Carolyn Yule
“He’S In Jail Now And I Don’T Feel Bad”: Analyzing Sureties’ Decisions To Report Bail Violations, Rachel Schumann, Carolyn Yule
International Journal on Responsibility
The control, supervision, and rehabilitation of criminalized people often falls on the shoulders of non-state agents and organizations. Surety bail releases are a clear embodiment of this trend, as the courts call upon relatives, friends, and employers to supervise the pre-conviction activity of people accused of a crime. According to the law, sureties must report all bail violations to the police; the resulting diffusion of responsibility is said to increase the penal state’s power and control over criminal justice-involved individuals while minimizing reputational risks. Yet how sureties carry out this role in the community remains unexplored. Using data from 36 …

Why Is Food Insecurity High Among U.S. Grandparents Who Are Caring For Grandchildren?, Madonna Harrington Meyer, Anna Delapaz
Population Health Research Brief Series
One in four grandparent-headed families report food insecurity, compared to one in seven among all families with children. Generally, the more care grandparents provide for their grandchildren, the more likely they are to be food insecure. This brief summarizes finding from interviews conducted in 2021 with U.S. adults ages 60 and older who are caring for their grandchildren. The authors summarize the factors contributing to food insecurity among grandparents and call for better policies to assist food-insecure grandparents providing care for their grandchildren as they grapple with inadequate funds, burdensome food assistance programs, inadequate transportation, shortages of fresh foods, and …
A Comparative Study: The Effectiveness Of Various Search Strategies For Finding Critical Evidence In Crime Scene Analysis, Elianna Tracy
A Comparative Study: The Effectiveness Of Various Search Strategies For Finding Critical Evidence In Crime Scene Analysis, Elianna Tracy
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
In crime scene investigations, evidence is collected in hopes of establishing probable cause to present in court. There are numerous strategies, but four well-known techniques are spiral, grid, parallel, and wheel (Lothridge, 2014). Many factors like room size, room shape, type of crime, time-sensitivity, available personnel, and more contribute to which search strategy is used. The question is which search strategy is the most effective; meaning it spends a minimal amount of time and collects the most evidence in a square room when compared to other strategies. The purpose of this project was to use mathematical modeling to outline and …

Many people avoid politics due to feeling unqualified, uninformed or intimidated. That is not the case with Jonny Gartner, a 2023 political science graduate of Cedarville University who now serves as the systems and reporting manager at Cedarville.
For Gartner, who is originally from Columbus, Ohio, and now lives in suburban Dayton, Ohio, finding ways to use his degree to actively influence and support his community and encouraging others to do the same is his focus. One way he is using his influence is by serving as a delegate for the Nikki Haley campaign at the July GOP convention in …
