A Different Kind Of Black, But The Same Issues: Black Males And Counterstories At A Predominantly White Institution, Don C. Sawyer Iii, Phd, Robert T. Palmer Dec 2103

A Different Kind Of Black, But The Same Issues: Black Males And Counterstories At A Predominantly White Institution, Don C. Sawyer Iii, Phd, Robert T. Palmer

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

Much has been written about Black men over the years and in different institutional contexts (e.g., community colleges, predominantly White institutions [PWIs], and historically Black colleges and universities). However, very little of this research has emphasized how the intersecting identities of Black men shape their experiences in higher education. To this end, this article draws from intersectionality and counternarratives, both of which has roots in critical race theory (CRT), to discuss how race, class, and gender informs the experiences of two Black males enrolled in a PWI. This article concludes with critical implications to help institutional leaders at PWIs ...

Armando Arias, Ph.D.

Dr. Arias' forthcoming book Theorizing Cesar Chavez: New Ways of Knowing STEM (2019) provides a treatise in the social psychology of scientific thinking in everyday life or a new paradigm for critically examining the STEM movement and fields from a sociological perspective. As a strategy for stirring the imagination Dr. Arias suggest lessons from the social and behavior sciences for new ways of interpreting fields found in STEM (science, technology, engineering & mathematics).

The book is meant to be a critical examination of existing pedagogy found in the national STEM Program through the lens of sociological science friction

The Biased Media And Their Utilization Of Propaganda: The True Obstructionists Of World Events And Our Minds, David B. Ross, Gina Peyton, Melissa Tara Sasso, Rande Matteson, Cortney Matteson Dec 2019

The Biased Media And Their Utilization Of Propaganda: The True Obstructionists Of World Events And Our Minds, David B. Ross, Gina Peyton, Melissa Tara Sasso, Rande Matteson, Cortney Matteson

Dr. Melissa Tara Sasso

Propaganda is a widely controversial issue, especially when it collides with the media and politicians. This complex system creates tension between those who have a personal agenda to disseminate false statements to advance their plan to manipulate the minds of the public. Based upon 24/7 cable news and social media, there seems to be a miscommunication and disconnect from the truth regarding how the media reports world events, politics, environment, and how politicians were elected to help their constituents, not their own personal agendas. This chapter will address the concern for a better system of reporting the facts and ...

“Find That Balance:” The Impact Of Cultural Consonance And Dissonance On Mental Health Among Utah And Mormon Women, Francois Dengah Dec 2019

“Find That Balance:” The Impact Of Cultural Consonance And Dissonance On Mental Health Among Utah And Mormon Women, Francois Dengah

Francois Dengah

Cultural consonance and religious participation are both associatedwith salutogenic
mental health outcomes. Yet studies of religious and other cultural models must take
into account multiple and conflicting cultural norms. In this article, we explore the
consequences of trying to adhere to the oppositional cultural models of religious
(Latter-day Saint or Mormon) and secular American gender roles as perceived by
college-aged women at a Utah university. Using cultural consensus and cultural
consonance analysis, we demonstrate that while conforming with one model may
provide social and mental health benefits, striving for consonance with both results
in increased perceived stress levels for Latter-day ...

Hip-Hop Librarianship For Scholarly Communication: An Approach To Introducing Topics, Arthur J. Boston

Arthur J. Boston

This session compares major topics from scholarly communication and trends in Hip-Hop, with the objective of providing lessons and examples for effective teaching. By discussing Hip-Hop artists as impact-minded authors of copyrighted works navigating a marketplace newly-disrupted by Internet technology, it may be possible for students to bring their existing knowledge about the popular genre, and apply it to a new understanding of the scholarly communication environment.
Examples: Copyright, Fair Use, and Mac Miller; Prohibitive Pricing, Piracy, and Kanye West; Author's Rights, First Distribution, and Beyoncé; Open Access, Repositories, and Chance The Rapper.

Credit, Sectoral Misallocation And Productivity Growth: A Disaggregated Analysis, Carlos Urrutia, Felipe Meza, Sangeeta Pratap Sep 2019

Credit, Sectoral Misallocation And Productivity Growth: A Disaggregated Analysis, Carlos Urrutia, Felipe Meza, Sangeeta Pratap

Carlos Urrutia

We study the relation between credit conditions, misallocation of resources, and productivity growth in a multi-sector model with financial frictions. In our framework, working capital constraints and borrowing limits create wedges between the marginal product of inputs and their relative prices, which we can map into distortions to the capital to labor ratio and to the use of intermediate goods. The distribution of these distortions across sectors and their changes over time affect aggregate TFP. We construct a novel dataset for the Mexican manufacturing activity that merges real and financial data at the 4-digit sectoral level and use our model ...

Is The Church Israel Today2.Docx, Barry D. Fike

Barry D. Fike

Many questions have arisen in the church as to whether it replaced Israel as God's people or were we added onto Israel in the Olive Tree analogy talked about in Romans 11. This paper look at the Kingdom Now movement and the error perpetrated by it and a re-investigation into the nature of the body of Christ and Israel.

Transformation From Within: Practicing Global Education Through Critical Feminist Pedagogy, Ann M. Oberhauser Aug 2019

Transformation From Within: Practicing Global Education Through Critical Feminist Pedagogy, Ann M. Oberhauser

Ann Oberhauser

This paper examines the transformative role of critical feminist pedagogy as it applies to global experiential learning. I argue that a feminist approach to global education challenges racialized, neoliberal, and colonizing dimensions of higher education. Global experiential learning provides the basis for an interactive or relational form of critical feminist pedagogy within cross-cultural and transnational communities. The methodology for this research is grounded in decolonizing and feminist pedagogies that address multiple levels of engagement within the education process and among students, faculty, and communities. This discussion demonstrates how critical feminist pedagogy effectively addresses societal issues concerning power, privilege, and knowledge ...

Gendered Livelihood Strategies In Rural South Africa And Appalachia, Ann M. Oberhauser Aug 2019

Gendered Livelihood Strategies In Rural South Africa And Appalachia, Ann M. Oberhauser

Ann Oberhauser

This paper examines the contextual nature of gendered livelihood strategies through a comparative study of rural women”s producer groups in former homelands of South Africa and Appalachia. This comparative approach situates gendered livelihood strategies in distinct local contexts that are constituted by specific historical dynamics and cultural relations. Producer groups are defined here as cooperatives, networks, and other collective economic activities that generate income for households and are part of community-based economic strategies. The discussion focuses on the link between socio-economic conditions and gendered livelihood strategies and the economic viability of these producer groups as sustainable income-generating activities, especially ...

Locating Gender In Rural Economic Networks, Ann M. Oberhauser

Ann Oberhauser

In recent decades, increasing entrepreneurial activities among women have contributed to shifting livelihood strategies at the household, community, and regional scales. In this paper I examine home based work in an economic network to highlight the intersection of gender and economic practices in rural Appalachia. The research demonstrates that these livelihood strategies both construct and are shaped by dynamic material conditions and social processes in place. Economic restructuring in the central Appalachian region has led to the reworking of economic strategies, despite a continued reliance by households on homework and informal activities. The case study for this project as an ...

A Moral Panic Over Cats, William S. Lynn, Francisco J. Santiago-Ávila, Joann Lindenmayer, John Hadidian, Arian D. Wallach, Barbara J. King

William S. Lynn, Ph.D.

Some conservationists believe that free-ranging cats pose an enormous risk to biodiversity and public health and therefore should be eliminated from the landscape by any means necessary. They further claim that those who question the science or ethics behind their arguments are science deniers (merchants of doubt) seeking to mislead the public. As much as we share a commitment to conservation of biodiversity and wild nature, we believe these ideas are wrong and fuel an unwarranted moral panic over cats. Those who question the ecological or epidemiological status of cats are not science deniers, and it is a false analogy ...

Increasing Faculty-Librarian Collaboration Through Critical Librarianship, Adrienne Gosselin, Mandi Goodsett Aug 2019

Increasing Faculty-Librarian Collaboration Through Critical Librarianship, Adrienne Gosselin, Mandi Goodsett

Mandi Goodsett

Through the lens of critical librarianship, librarians are becoming increasingly involved in social justice, civic engagement, and human rights issues. This paper examines the collaboration between a subject librarian and a faculty member in an assignment that engaged in Public Sphere Pedagogy (PSP), a teaching strategy with the goal of increasing students’ sense of civic agency and personal and social responsibility by connecting their classwork to public arenas; and project-based learning, wherein students develop a question to research and create projects that reflect their knowledge, which they share with a select audience.

The Lines Between The Checkboxes : The Experiences Of Racially Ambiguous People Of Color, Tyce Nadrich Aug 2019

The Lines Between The Checkboxes : The Experiences Of Racially Ambiguous People Of Color, Tyce Nadrich

Tyce Nadrich

The influences of race on people’s lived experiences are vast and enumerable. Despite advancements in multicultural counseling literature, the experiences of racially ambiguous people of color, or persons who do not align with preexisting ideas about race (Brown & Brown, 2004; James &Tucker, 2003; Young, Sanchez, & Wilton, 2013), are relatively unknown. Further, the racially ambiguous experience is often conflated with persons of mixed-race heritage (Young, Sanchez, & Wilton, 2013). The goal of this dissertation study was to understand the lived experiences of racially ambiguous people of color. Participants identifying as racially ambiguous were recruited to discuss their lived experiences. Grounded in Critical Race Theory (Crenshaw, Gotanda, Peller, & Thomas, 1995; Haskins & Singh, 2015), this phenomenological, qualitative study included two in-depth, semi-structured interviews. A cross section of 14 participants with varying ages, genders, racial compositions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and cultures engaged in this study. Findings suggest that the construct of racial ambiguity is not confined to persons of mixed-race heritage, and racially ambiguous people of color have a unique ...

The Benefits Of Open Educational Resources (Oers) For Faculty And Students, Larry Sheret, Lindsey M. Harper

Larry Sheret

Many Open Educational Resources (OERs) have been developed during the past ten years that have the same quality as those offered by major publishers. We will identify the pros and cons of switching from a traditional textbook to an OER. After the Q&A, we will work with the participants to locate an OER textbook that each participant will evaluate for possible adoption. This session is most suited to faculty who are teaching lower division General Education classes with a large number of students enrolled in a lecture or in multiple sections.

Personality Traits As Predictors Of Leadership Style Preferences: Investigating The Relationship Between Social Dominance Orientation And Attitudes Towards Authentic Leaders, Joseph E. Trimble, Phd, Jordan A. Romager, Kamran Hughes

Joseph E. Trimble, PhD

Background and Purpose: The purpose of the current study was to assess the degree to which followers view authentic leadership as viable. Prior research has suggested that authentic leaders are multiculturally competent and effective in the workplace. For authentic leadership to thrive, it will help to better understand followers’ attitudes towards it. We investigated followers’ attitudes towards authentic leaders along with other influential leadership styles. Additionally, we sought to further an individual difference perspective concerning how followers view their leaders. We examined the relationship between followers’ level of social dominance orientation and their attitudes towards authentic leaders.

Investigating The Framing Effect In Social And Behavioral Science Research: Potential Influences On Behavior, Cognition And Emotion, Joseph E. Trimble, Phd, Kamran Hughes, Joshua Thompson Aug 2019

Investigating The Framing Effect In Social And Behavioral Science Research: Potential Influences On Behavior, Cognition And Emotion, Joseph E. Trimble, Phd, Kamran Hughes, Joshua Thompson

Joseph E. Trimble, PhD

The framing effect has far-reaching implications for our understanding of social psychology and intergroup behavior. In recent decades, the effect garnered considerable attention in the fields of psychology, political science, and communication studies. Whether the effect is demonstrated by repetitious news stories or in voting behavior, framing matters. It matters for both theoretical and pragmatic reasons. We will make connections between framing and politics as a way of illustrating the real world applicability of this effect. The practical relevance of the framing effect is why effectively researching it is so crucial. The purpose of this paper is to propose ways ...

Notes On The Economics Of Residential Hybrid Energy System, Mahelet G. Fikru, Gregory M. Gelles, Ana M. Ichim, Joseph D. Smith

Joseph D. Smith

Despite advances in small-scale hybrid renewable energy technologies, there are limited economic frameworks that model the different decisions made by a residential hybrid system owner. We present a comprehensive review of studies that examine the techno-economic feasibility of small-scale hybrid energy systems, and we find that the most common approach is to compare the annualized life-time costs to the expected energy output and choose the system with the lowest cost per output. While practical, this type of benefit—cost analysis misses out on other production and consumption decisions that are simultaneously made when adopting a hybrid energy system. In this ...

Impacts Of Resource Fluctuations And Recurrent Tsunamis On The Occupational History Of Čḯxwicən, A Salishan Village On The Southern Shore Of The Strait Of Juan De Fuca, Washington State, U.S.A, Ian Hutchinson, Virginia L. Butler, Sarah K. Campbell, Sarah L. Sterling, Michael A. Etnier, Kristine M. Bovy

Sarah L. Sterling

A summed probability density function (spdf), generated from the catalog of 101 radiocarbon ages on wood and charcoal from the Čḯxwicən archaeological site (Washington State, USA), serves as a proxy for the site's occupational history over the last 2500 years. Significant differences between spdfs derived from a null model of population growth (a bootstrapped logistic equation) and the observed index suggest relatively less cultural activity at Čḯxwicən between about 1950–1750 cal BP, 1150–950 cal BP, and 650 to 550 cal BP; and increased activity between about 1350–1250 cal BP and 550–500 cal BP. Peaks in ...

Building A Landscape History And Occupational Chronology At Čḯxwicən, A Coastal Village On The Strait Of Juan De Fuca, Washington State, U.S.A., Sarah K. Campbell, Sarah L. Sterling, Dennis E. Lewarch Aug 2019

Building A Landscape History And Occupational Chronology At Čḯxwicən, A Coastal Village On The Strait Of Juan De Fuca, Washington State, U.S.A., Sarah K. Campbell, Sarah L. Sterling, Dennis E. Lewarch

Sarah L. Sterling

Geoarchaeological analysis at Čḯxwicən, an ancestral Klallam village near Port Angeles in northwestern Washington State, U.S.A., highlights the resilience of coastal foragers and their connection to place. Ancestral Klallam peoples occupied ever-changing beach and spit landforms growing within the shelter of Ediz Hook on the Strait of Juan de Fuca (SJDF) for 2700 years. Geoarchaeological methods were employed to define seven chronostratigraphic zones that chronologically structure the cultural deposits and allow them to be correlated to a sequence of beach development and to markers for tsunami that overtopped the site. Initial habitation prior to 1750 BP utilized a ...

Surveying Libraries To Identify Best Practices For A Menu Approach For Library Instruction Requests, Candice Benjes-Small, Jennifer L. Dorner, Robert Schroeder Aug 2019

Surveying Libraries To Identify Best Practices For A Menu Approach For Library Instruction Requests, Candice Benjes-Small, Jennifer L. Dorner, Robert Schroeder

Robert Schroeder

A challenging situation has developed in regards to library instruction. With increases in both the quantity of information and the variety of information technologies being made available to researchers, the information literacy landscape is getting more complex. Simultaneously, the time allotted for library instruction is remaining essentially the same. In order to market the breadth of content available for library instruction sessions and to promote collaboration between librarians and teaching faculty in order to create optimal instruction sessions an 'a la carte menu' approach to library instruction requests was adopted by Radford University in 2004. Since the late 1990s a ...
