A Statistical Analysis Of Economic Perceptions In The 2015 United Kingdom General Election, Amarvir Singh-Bal Mr. May 2019

A Statistical Analysis Of Economic Perceptions In The 2015 United Kingdom General Election, Amarvir Singh-Bal Mr.

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper characterises the vote which took place in the United Kingdom's (U.K.) 2015 General Election as an ‘accountability instrument.’ In doing so, the research interrogates which sections of the electorate hold the incumbent government more accountable for economic outcomes between the 2010 and 2015 U.K. General Elections. The Rational Choice Theory and the Michigan Model are used in this study to present two interlinked, and yet distinct, hypotheses – that less politically informed and non-partisan voters are more likely to hold the government accountable for economic performances; compared to the politically informed and partisan voters within the ...

Advanced Statistics In Arkansas Sports Reporting, Andrew Lee Epperson May 2019

Advanced Statistics In Arkansas Sports Reporting, Andrew Lee Epperson

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to analyze how Arkansas’ sports journalists are adapting to the recent surge in available advanced statistics that are being used by certain national news organizations. Using in-depth qualitative research that includes in-depth interviews with a number of individuals in the print, broadcast, and athletics side of sports coverage, we discover how journalists and coaches use these next-generation analytics, what they fundamentally mean for the evolution of each respective path, and why so few Arkansas reporters and writers use them at the time of this paper’s defense. We see how budgets and deadlines restrict the use of ...

Issue Salience And Lawmaking: How Public Attention Drives Lawmaker Behavior, Joseph Colin Zamadics Jan 2019

Issue Salience And Lawmaking: How Public Attention Drives Lawmaker Behavior, Joseph Colin Zamadics

Political Science Graduate Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation advances issue salience as a theoretical concept in lawmaking. Often, issue salience is used as a control or omitted from analyses that focus on other concepts in lawmaking such as public opinion, constituent demographics, and lawmaker characteristics. I argue that the field's theoretical understanding of lawmaking is incomplete without considering issue salience. In order to insert issue salience into current models of lawmaking, the concept must be better defined. I uncover various nuances in issue salience by parsing out differences in issues and the lawmaking entity that is the receiver of the signal. I do so by ...

Promoting An Ethical Economics Classroom Through Partnership, Simon Halliday Jan 2019

Promoting An Ethical Economics Classroom Through Partnership, Simon Halliday

Economics: Faculty Publications

In teaching economics, the instructor scaffolds what they teach on an implicitly assumed or explicitly recognized ethical vision. Such a vision holds true even as economists often separate “positive economics” from “normative economics,” claiming positive economics finds its basis in data and theory whereas normative economics concerns the ought or ethical statements that data or theory may imply (Davis, 2016). Economics, furthermore, suffers from lack of diversity: from white men constituting the majority of researchers and teachers, to textbooks that fail to show the diverse range of real people participating in the economy (Aerni, Bartlett, Lewis, McGoldrick, & Shackelford, 1999). In ...

Social Justice, Numeracy, And Teaching Statistics At A Community College, Edward Volchok Jan 2019

Social Justice, Numeracy, And Teaching Statistics At A Community College, Edward Volchok

Numeracy

The author of this article reflects on the issues of justice, democracy, and numeracy. As one who has taught statistics in a community college for over 12 years, spent 28 years as a Marketing Consultant, and holds a PhD in political science, the author’s thesis is that while an advanced, democratic society can only be just with a numerate citizenry, fostering numeracy is not easy. In this article the author describes the daunting tasks of trying to define what justice is and reviews activities from his statistics class that help students develop their numeracy.

Metamorphic Robustness Testing: Exposing Hidden Defects In Citation Statistics And Journal Impact Factors, Zhi Q. Zhou, T.H. Tse, Matt Witheridge Jan 2019

Metamorphic Robustness Testing: Exposing Hidden Defects In Citation Statistics And Journal Impact Factors, Zhi Q. Zhou, T.H. Tse, Matt Witheridge

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

We propose a robustness testing approach for software systems that process large amounts of data. Our method usesmetamorphic relations to check software output for erroneous input in the absence of a tangible test oracle. We use this technique to testtwo major citation database systems: Scopus and the Web of Science. We report a surprising finding that the inclusion of hyphensin paper titles impedes citation counts, and that this is a result of the lack of robustness of the citation database systems in handlinghyphenated paper titles. Our results are valid for the entire literature as well as for individual fields such ...
