Bullying At The Fire Station? Perceptions Based On Gender, Race And Sexual Orientation, John C. Griffith, Donna L. Roberts, Ronald T. Wakeham

Discrimination and strained co-worker relationships based on gender, race or sexual orientation are forms of bullying in the workplace. This research examines firefighter perceptions with regard to bullying as defined above. Survey questions were based on the National Report Card on Women and Firefighting study (Hulett, Bendick, Thomas & Miccio, 2008). The web-based survey was distributed through the National Fire Academy Training, Resources and Data Exchange Network, (TRADENET). Findings from 113 completed surveys indicated that most firefighters did not perceive bullying issues were pervasive in the fire service. However there were large differences in perception between female and male firefighters. …

According to national trends on reference statistics from ARL, reference questions are declining. At our university, however, reference statistics are on the rise. While this is great news, we don’t know why it's happening.  We wish that we could attribute this good fortune to our approachable posture and wonderful instruction sessions ... we’re the sirens of the library luring nearby students to our reference desk with our enchanting smiles, but instead of meeting disaster, students find information.

Pepperdine librarians created a comprehensive guide on publishing resources in response to questions we have received over the year from professors on topics such as the best journals to publish in, the prestige of journals, and how often their articles are cited. By creating this guide, we increased our knowledge of bibliometrics, which involves measuring the influence of scholarly research based on how often articles, books and journals are cited by other researchers. We have increased faculty engagement with the library because professors are interested in resources that assist them with the publishing and ultimately their success as scholars. Pepperdine …

Scholars have noted that race and ethnicity, socio-economic status (SES) as well as other socio-demographic factors may limit participation in local food systems based on the historic and structured patterns of inequalities that remain in communities promoting alternative agriculture and food (agrifood) activities. However, few empirical studies have examined the barriers which prevent people from participating in local food system activities. This paper uses survey data from the 2008 Ohio Survey of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Issues to consider whether barriers such as interest, time, financial resources, geography and space impact the participation of households in home gardening. Democracy, according to a large body of research, contributes to human development by improving citizens' lives (Prezeworkski et al. 2000; Gerrign et al. 2012; McGuire 2010; Baum and Lake 2003; Gerring et al. 2015). Broad evidence demonstrates that democracies provide higher standards of living, on average, for their citizens than authoritarian countries (Boix 2001; Brown and Hunter 2004; Brown and Mobarak 2009; Besley and Kudamatsu 2006; Lake and Baum 2001). The Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) is a planning and implementation model that mobilizes communities to collaborate on developing and implementing an evidence-based prevention system. This model follows a structured five-step process with two cross-cutting elements (cultural competence and sustainability) that emphasizes building capacity of coalitions to strategically plan, implement, and sustain evidence-based prevention services to reduce adolescent substance use. This study utilized a repeated cross-sectional design. Participating youth were in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 and lived in one of 27 counties in a Southeastern state that was funded through the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention’s SPF State Incentive …

Arbitration clauses in consumer contracts have been subject to controversy in many jurisdictions; recent U.S. and Canadian Supreme Court case law have been used as examples. European Union (E.U.) law, which originally excluded arbitration in general from the Brussels/Rome regimes, has recently taken a mixed, and to some extent limited, approach by including Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) entities “imposing” a solution in its recent ADR Directive 2013/11. There seems to be an indirect encouragement to develop consumer arbitration schemes in E.U. Member States as a second route to justice.
