Distress Evaluation In A Veteran Affairs Oncology Clinic, Reena Jayani, Ronald J. Markert, Amy Heard, Geetika Kumar

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Distress in oncology patients (pts) has a negative impact on quality of life, survival, and healthcare satisfaction. Higher distress leads to lower compliance with treatment and follow-up [1-8]. The 2012 American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) standard of care for oncology pts included an assessment for distress [1]. A screening process for distress allows the healthcare team to address these issues early and refer to appropriate resources [2-9]. This project was initiated to meet National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and CoC standard of care, identify distress in veterans with cancer, and address these concerns. Patients who attended the …

Circadian rhythms are generated by cell autonomous circadian clocks that perform a ubiquitous cellular time-keeping function and cell type-specific functions important for normal physiology. Studies show inducing the deletion of the core circadian clock transcription factor Bmal1 in adult mouse cardiomyocytes disrupts cardiac circadian clock function, cardiac ion channel expression, slows heart rate, and prolongs the QT-interval at slow heart rates. This study determined how inducing the deletion of Bmal1 in adult cardiomyocytes impacted the in vivo electrophysiological phenotype of a knock-in mouse model for the arrhythmogenic long QT syndrome (Scn5a+/ΔKPQ). Electrocardiographic telemetry showed inducing the …

Background

Muscle atrophy is a common pathology associated with disuse, such as prolonged bed rest or spaceflight, and is associated with detrimental health outcomes. There is emerging evidence that disuse atrophy may differentially affect males and females. Cellular mechanisms contributing to the development and progression of disuse remain elusive, particularly protein turnover cascades. The purpose of this study was to investigate the initial development and progression of disuse muscle atrophy in male and female mice using the well-established model of hindlimb unloading (HU).

Methods

One hundred C57BL/6J mice (50 male and 50 female) were hindlimb suspended for 0 (control), 24, …

Prevalence Of Tp-53/Rb-1 Co-Mutation In Large Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma, Hoda Saghaeiannejad Esfahani, Cory M. Vela, Aman Chauhan

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Introduction: Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is a rare and highly aggressive high-grade neuroendocrine neoplasm, which can arise from anywhere in the body. Due to its rarity there is a lacuna in our understanding of LCNEC’s molecular biology. In 2016, Rekhtman and colleagues presented one of the largest molecular sequencing series of pulmonary LCNEC. They differentiated genomic profiles of LCNEC into two major subsets: small cell lung cancer (SCLC)-like, characterized by TP53 + RB1 co-mutation/loss, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)-like, characterized by the lack of co-altered TP53 + RB1. This finding is of significance because at present LCNEC patients …
