E-cadherin junctions facilitate assembly and disassembly of cell contacts that drive development and homeostasis of epithelial tissues. In this study, using Xenopus embryonic kidney and Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, we investigate the role of the Wnt/planar cell polarity (PCP) formin Daam1 (Dishevelled-associated activator of morphogenesis 1) in regulating E-cadherin-based intercellular adhesion. Using live imaging, we show that Daam1 localizes to newly formed cell contacts in the developing nephron. Furthermore, analyses of junctional filamentous actin (F-actin) upon Daam1 depletion indicate decreased microfilament localization and slowed turnover. Importance: Women studying medicine currently equal men in number, but evidence suggests that men and women might not be evaluated equally throughout their education.

Objective: To examine whether there are differences associated with gender in either objective or subjective evaluations of medical students in an internal medicine clerkship.

Design, Setting, and Participants: This single-center retrospective cohort study evaluated data from 277 third-year medical students completing internal medicine clerkships in the 2017 to 2018 academic year at an academic hospital and its affiliates in Pennsylvania. OBJECTIVES: Since the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, immune modulators have been considered front-line candidates for the management of patients presenting with clinical symptoms secondary to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. Although heavy emphasis has been placed on early clinical efficacy, we sought to evaluate the impact of pharmacologic approach to coronavirus disease 2019 within the ICU on secondary infections and clinical outcomes.

Summary

Oncogenic osteomalacia secondary to glomus tumor is extremely rare. Localization of causative tumors is critical as surgical resection can lead to a complete biochemical and clinical cure. We present a case of oncogenic osteomalacia treated with resection of glomus tumor. A 39-year-old woman with a history of chronic sinusitis presented with chronic body ache and muscle weakness. Biochemical evaluation revealed elevated alkaline phosphatase hypophosphatemia, increased urinary phosphate excretion, low calcitriol, and FGF23 was unsuppressed suggestive of oncogenic osteomalacia. Stroke results in the death of around 6.5 million people annually with a majority of these occurring in developing countries. Serum calcium has been hypothesised to play a significant role in causing ischaemic stroke. This retrospective observational study was conducted to determine the correlation, if any, between serum calcium and the severity of acute ischaemic stroke in our population. Neuroscientists have discovered the existence of meningeal lymphatic vessels in the brain and have shown their importance in preventing cognitive decline in mouse models of Alzheimer s disease. With age, lymphatic vessels narrow and poorly drain cerebrospinal fluid, leading to plaque accumulation, a marker for Alzheimer s disease. OBJECTIVE: It is controversial whether adults who are obese but "metabolically healthy" have cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk comparable with that of normal-weight adults. High-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT), a biomarker of myocardial damage, is useful in characterizing subclinical CVD. We categorized obesity phenotypes and studied their associations with subclinical and clinical CVD and CVD subtypes, including heart failure (HF).

Studies reveal minimal improvements over time in the proportions of underrepresented in medicine (URiM) physicians; however, studies assessing trends in pediatric URiM trainee representation are limited. A magnetic resonance (MR) biologic marker (biomarker) is a measurable quantitative characteristic that is an indicator of normal biological and pathogenetic processes or a response to therapeutic intervention derived from the MR imaging process. Serum levels of pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal (NT) proBNP are measured at admission to assess the likelihood of acutely decompensated heart failure (ADHF). Elevated NT-proBNP levels on initial presentation are a reliable marker of ADHF. However, the prognostic significance of NT-proBNP levels measured on admission remains unknown. With a better understanding of how admitting NT-proBNP levels impacts readmission rates, length of stay and mortality, future prospective studies with specific interventions can be developed to reduce all-cause readmissions, shorten length of stay and reduce mortality.

May-Thurner Syndrome (MTS) is an anatomical syndrome characterized by a predisposition to clot formation when there is compression of the left iliac vein by the right iliac artery. In this case, we discuss an atypical presentation of MTS in a young male after rapid weight loss. The patient was admitted for an unprovoked massive proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after a two-hundred-pound weight loss during the preceding six-month period. Treatment involved mechanical thrombectomy by interventional radiology, initiation of apixaban and recommended follow up with vascular surgery for angioplasty instead of immediate stent placement.

This nosocomial infection is closely related to antibiotic use in health services and is commonly found in the elderly. Antibiotics can promote colonization and CDI by intestinal microbiota dysbiosis and complex innate immune system activation. The manifestation also has a wide spectrum, ranging from mild diarrhea to fulminant colonic mucosal necrosis. Sejak elektrokardiografi (EKG) dibawa ke perhatian klinisi oleh Einthoven1 sampai dengan saat ini, EKG masih merupakan modalitas yang tidak dapat dipisahkan dalam penilaian sistem kardiovaskular. Namun, pemeriksaan yang sederhana dan tidak invasif ini, tidak selalu mudah untuk diintepretasikan. Hasil yang tergambar di kertas EKG tidak murni dipengaruhi jaringan otot jantung saja, namun dipengaruhi juga oleh jaringan tubuh lain yang terdapat di antara jantung dan lokasi dimana elektroda diletakkan. Dengan demikian, hal ini juga harus dipertimbangkan dalam menginterpretasikan hasil EKG.
