This field study was carried out with 10 public service interpreters by telephone in France with the aim of highlighting the aspects considered by practitioners as a source of constraints specific to the French-Arabic language pair. Three main questions were addressed with the participants: (1) the difficulties inherent to the variety of dialects spoken by Arabic-speaking users and (2) the issues of cultural differences between interpreter and users. International Journal of Tour Guiding and Visitor Attraction Research

This study investigates the challenges licensed guide interpreters in Japan encounter related to using the English language by examining foreign language tour guides’ use of English through interviews and surveys. The findings reveal that guides prioritise effectively conveying information and cautionary points to guests. They adjust their speaking speed, pronunciation, volume, vocabulary, and sentence structures to ensure easy understanding. Approximately 80% of the vocabulary used is at or below B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), indicating the issues which non-native speakings guides face. This experiment sought to explore whether an interviewer’s body language availability would have any effects on participants’ interactional engagement levels, positivity-negativity of interaction, and their nonverbal synchrony. Six participants answered questions about their well-being during a Zoom interview. Participants were exposed to three Near and three Far video framing conditions alternating every 10 min. Results showed that body language availability did not have reliable effects on the examined nonverbal communication indices. Time, however, did have some significant and close-to-significant effects on certain variables. Treatment reversal graphs showed that body language availability may reliably impact some participants’ responding. However, the rarity …

Through a narrative about the formation and advancement of Wichita State University’s community-based health equity initiative Alce su Voz (‘Speak Out’), this article presents a reflection on the author’s role as a community-engaged scholar and the multiple levels of work in which linguists can engage to support linguistic social justice. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาและหาแนวทางในการแปลคำศัพท์เฉพาะด้านภาพยนตร์ในหนังสือเรื่อง Cinematography: Theory and Practice For Cinematographers and Directors, Third Edition ของ Blain Brown ผู้วิจัยคัดเลือกคำศัพท์ทั้งสิ้น 30 คำ โดยมีสมมติฐานของการวิจัยว่า ในการแปลศัพท์เฉพาะด้านภาพยนตร์ให้สามารถถ่ายทอดความหมายได้ถูกต้องและเหมาะสมนั้น จะต้องใช้กลวิธีการแปลทั้งหมดสองวิธี ได้แก่ 1) แปลแบบตีความโดยใช้คำที่มีอยู่แล้วในภาษาปลายทางและใช้แนวทางบัญญัติศัพท์โดยวิธีทาบเทียบ (Mapping-Matching) ตามแนวทางของสมศีล ฌานวังศะ (ม.ป.ป.) และ 2) แปลแบบถ่ายเสียงพร้อมเติมคำอธิบายสั้น ๆ และใช้แนวทางบัญญัติศัพท์โดยวิธียืมตรง (Direct Borrowing) ตามแนวทางของสมศีล ฌานวังศะ ผลการวิจัยแสดงให้เห็นว่ากลวิธีการแปลเป็นไปตามสมมติฐานคือ (1) แปลแบบตีความโดยใช้คำที่มีอยู่แล้วในภาษาปลายทางและใช้แนวทางบัญญัติศัพท์โดยวิธีทาบเทียบ (Mapping-Matching) ตามแนวทางของสมศีล ฌานวังศะ (ร้อยละ 73.3) และ (2) แปลแบบถ่ายเสียงพร้อมเติมคำอธิบายสั้น ๆ และใช้แนวทางบัญญัติศัพท์โดยวิธียืมตรง (Direct Borrowing) ตามแนวทางของสมศีล ฌานวังศะ (ร้อยละ 26.7) ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับกลวิธีการแปลศัพท์เฉพาะในงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง ได้แก่ งานวิจัยของ วิภาดา เปรมวุฒิ (2533) โอซ่า มาร์คลุนด์ (2011) และทรงวุฒิ บุริมจิตต์ (2550) คือมีการใช้กลวิธีการแปลแบบตรงตัวและแบบไม่ตรงตัว และไม่พบกลวิธีการแปลโดยการแทนที่แนวคิดทางวัฒนธรรมในสังคมของผู้อ่านภาษาปลายทาง

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาศึกษากลวิธีการแปลประโยคอติพจน์จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ในนวนิยายเรื่อง Crazy Rich Asians ของ Kevin Kwan (2513) และฉบับแปลภาษาไทย เหลี่ยมโบตั๋น แปลโดย ศศิ พินทุ์ (2559) รวมถึงปัจจัยทางวัฒนธรรมบางประการที่ส่งผลต่อการแปลอติพจน์จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยได้คัดเลือกประโยคที่ปรากฏการใช้อติพจน์จำนวน 60 ประโยค ตามแนวทางการจำแนกประเภทอติพจน์ของ Claudia Claridge (2011) และใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์แนวทางการแปลความเปรียบและสำนวนภาษา (Trope Change) ของ Andrew Chesterman (2001) จากการจำแนกประเภทอติพจน์ที่ปรากฏในประโยคต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ จำนวน 60 ประโยค พบอติพจน์ในตัวบทต้นฉบับ 6 ประเภท ได้แก่ อติพจน์แบบคำเดียว อติพจน์ระดับวลี อติพจน์ระดับอนุประโยค อติพจน์ที่แสดงจำนวน การเปรียบเทียบขั้นสูงสุด และการใช้การเปรียบเทียบ โดยแบ่งเป็นอติพจน์ประเภทเดียวประโยคจำนวน 53 ประโยค และใช้อติพจน์มากกว่าหนึ่งประเภทร่วมกัน จำนวน 7 ประโยค จากการวิเคราะห์พบว่ากลวิธีที่ผู้แปลเลือกใช้ในการแปลประโยคอติพจน์ที่คัดสรรจำนวน 67 แห่ง มีทั้งหมด 3 กลวิธี ได้แก่ การรักษาอติพจน์หรือใช้สำนวนภาษาประเภทเดิม (55 แห่ง) เปลี่ยนไปใช้อติพจน์หรือสำนวนภาษาประเภทอื่น (3 ครั้ง) และแปลโดยไม่เก็บอติพจน์หรือสำนวนภาษา (9 แห่ง) โดยกลวิธีที่พบมากที่สุดคือ คงความเปรียบหรือสำนวนภาษาประเภทเดิม นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าประเด็นที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเรื่องเพศ เป็นปัจจัยทางวัฒนธรรมที่ส่งผลต่อการแปลอติพจน์จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ซึ่งผู้แปลเลือกใช้กลวิธีการกรองทางวัฒนธรรม (cultural filtering) ควบคู่กับการคงความเปรียบหรือสำนวนภาษาประเภทเดิม โดยใช้คำที่มีความหมายต่างกัน หากแต่ยังมีความเชื่อมโยงกันในแง่ของการสื่อความ จึงทำให้เห็นภาพการเปรียบเทียบไปในทำนองเดียวกันกับต้นฉบับโดยหลีกเลี่ยงการใช้ถ้อยคำที่สื่อความทางเพศอย่างโจ่งแจ้ง เพื่อให้เหมาะสมกับบริบทวัฒนธรรมไทย

แนวทางการแปลข้อความแสดงอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในบทความสารคดีของนิตยสาร National Geographic จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย, สริตา บูรณะสัมฤทธิ

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในตัวบทสารคดีวิทยาศาสตร์จากนิตยสาร National Geographic และกลวิธีการถ่ายทอดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์จากต้นฉบับอังกฤษไปยังฉบับแปลภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยศึกษาแนวคิดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ของ Lakoff และ Johnson (2003) แนวทางการระบุรูปภาษาที่แสดงอุปลักษณ์ของกลุ่ม Pragglejaz Group แนวทางการแปลอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์จากงานวิจัยตัวบทประเภทต่าง ๆ ตลอดจนประเภทอุปลักษณ์ที่พบในตัวบทวิทยาศาสตร์และสารคดี และประยุกต์ใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์กลวิธีการแปลของ Papadoudi (2010) Schäffner (2004) Deignan et al. (1997) และ Toury (1995) ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ผลการวิจัยพบว่า จากข้อมูลอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ที่เก็บจำนวน 126 ตัวอย่าง มีจำนวนรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 114 รูป สามารถจำแนกอุปลักษณ์ที่พบได้ 19 ประเภท เรียงลำดับจากมากที่สุดไปน้อยที่สุด ได้แก่ อุปลักษณ์สงคราม อุปลักษณ์มนุษย์ อุปลักษณ์การเดินทาง อุปลักษณ์เชิงกายภาพ อุปลักษณ์สิ่งมีชีวิต อุปลักษณ์คอมพิวเตอร์ อุปลักษณ์ศิลปะ อุปลักษณ์ธุรกิจ อุปลักษณ์เครื่องนุ่งห่ม อุปลักษณ์สุขภาพ อุปลักษณ์เกม กีฬา และการแข่งขัน อุปลักษณ์ก่อสร้าง อุปลักษณ์เครื่องจักร อุปลักษณ์พืชและการเพาะปลูก อุปลักษณ์เชิงทิศทาง อุปลักษณ์อาหาร อุปลักษณ์สัตว์ อุปลักษณ์ศาสนา และอุปลักษณ์ภัยธรรมชาติ จากการวิเคราะห์ พบว่าอุปลักษณ์ที่พบในภาษาอังกฤษปรากฏในภาษาไทยทุกประเภท ยกเว้นอุปลักษณ์ภัยธรรมชาติ ผลการวิเคราะห์บทแปลแตกต่างไปจากสมมติฐานเดิมที่ตั้งไว้ว่ากลวิธีการแปลที่พบมากสุดคือการแปลอุปลักษณ์โดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิม การแปลอุปลักษณ์โดยใช้มโนทัศน์ที่แตกต่างกัน และการแปลโดยไม่รักษาอุปลักษณ์ ตามลำดับ แต่ผลการวิจัยพบว่ากลวิธีการแปลที่พบมากสุด ได้แก่ 1) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิมและใช้รูปภาษาเหมือนเดิม พบร้อยละ 52.34 2) การแปลโดยไม่รักษาอุปลักษณ์ พบร้อยละ 21.09 3) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิมแต่ใช้รูปภาษาที่ต่างไปจากเดิม พบร้อยละ 10.94 4) การแปลโดยใช้มโนทัศน์ที่ต่างกัน พบร้อยละ 10.16 5) การตัดอุปลักษณ์ในภาษาต้นทางทิ้ง พบร้อยละ 3.91 และ 6) การแปลสิ่งที่ไม่ใช่อุปลักษณ์เป็นอุปลักษณ์ พบร้อยละ 1.56 ทั้งนี้ ไม่พบการเพิ่มอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ลงไปในบทแปล โดยสรุป อุปลักษณ์ในตัวบทสารคดีวิทยาศาสตร์จากภาษาอังกฤษสามารถถ่ายทอดเป็นภาษาไทยได้เป็นส่วนใหญ่โดยไม่มีอุปสรรค โดยอุปลักษณ์แต่ละประเภทสามารถถ่ายทอดได้ผ่านกลวิธีที่แตกต่างกัน …

This article presents an academic review of the collection of articles “on translation” and entitled river in an ocean. It engages with the foreword by Françoise Vergès and the introduction by editor Nuzhat Abbas, which set the tone of ‘decolonial feminism’ that permeates the essays. The reviews of the eleven essays—by women from southeast Asia, Africa, Palestine and Saudi Arabia—come from the perspective of feminist translation studies but pay careful attention to their very specific concerns around exile and life in diaspora.

Global right-wing anti-gender movements have developed a transnational pattern in their uses of language as a means of subjugation and of control, and this article examines manifestations of this pattern in two specific states: Brazil and Russia. By exploring the anti-gender languaging, rhetoric, and legislation advanced by Jair Bolsonaro (President of Brazil 2019–2022) and Vladimir Putin (President of Russia 2000–2008 and 2012 to the present) and their supporters, we find that, in both contexts, anti-gender campaigns are reactions to and also drivers for increasingly dramatic political and social conflicts, and in each case, anti-gender ideologies are embedded in larger right-wing …

This project spotlights improvised housing in the peripheral areas of São Paulo, Brazil, better known as favelas. For over a century, the favela has been known as a place of death, violence, crime, and oppression. Paradoxically, the first favelas in Rio de Janeiro were named after a plant that produces flowers. However, today, these communities are rarely compared to their beautiful, symbolic-of-life namesake. Instead, this prejudgement is rampant not only globally, but also within the proper city– which perpetuates social division. Such bilingual towns offer opportunities to examine the extent to which translation, including the decision not to translate, plays a role in shaping the public spaces of cities. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาและหาแนวทางการแปลกริยาไร้ประธาน “ให้” ที่แสดงมาลาบอกเล่า มาลาสั่ง และมาลาอนุญาตใน พระราชบัญญัติส่งเสริมการพัฒนาและคุ้มครองสถาบันครอบครัว พ.ศ. 2562 จากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ โดยมีสมมติฐานว่า กริยาไร้ประธาน “ให้” เป็นคำแสดงมาลาบอกเล่า มาลาสั่ง และมาลาอนุญาต และในการแปลกริยาดังกล่าวจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษจะขึ้นอยู่กับประเภทของมาลา โดยจะต้องเลือกคำแสดงมาลาที่สอดคล้องกันในภาษากฎหมายอังกฤษ จากการศึกษาพบกริยาไร้ประธาน “ให้” ในตัวบททั้งสิ้น 74 จุด แบ่งเป็นโครงสร้าง ให้ + (กรรม) + กริยา 60 จุด และ (กรรม) + ให้ + กริยา 14 จุด ไม่ละกรรม 55 จุด และละกรรม 19 จุด โดยสามารถจำแนกมาลาออกเป็น 4 ประเภท ได้แก่ 1) มาลาสั่ง 52 จุด 2) มาลาบอกเล่า 15 จุด 3) มาลาอนุญาต 6 จุด และ 4) มาลาสั่ง + อนุญาต 1 จุด กริยาไร้ประธาน "ให้" ที่พบสามารถแปลโดยใช้คำแสดงมาลาที่สอดคล้องกันในภาษากฎหมายอังกฤษ 60 จุด อีก 11 จุดต้องปรับเป็นคำชนิดอื่นเพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับโครงสร้างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษ และอีก 3 จุดไม่ได้ทำการแปลเพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงความซ้ำซ้อน กล่าวโดยสรุปได้ว่ากริยาไร้ประธาน “ให้” ในตัวบทส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในโครงสร้าง ให้ + (กรรม) + กริยา (81.08%) ไม่ละกรรม (74.32%) แสดงมาลาสั่ง (70.27%) และสามารถแปลโดยใช้คำแสดงมาลาที่สอดคล้องกันในภาษากฎหมายอังกฤษ (81.08%) ผลการวิจัยสอดคล้องกับสมมติฐานที่ตั้งไว้และยังสอดคล้องกับงานวิจัยที่ผ่านมาซึ่งระบุว่ากริยาไร้ประธาน “ให้” ในภาษากฎหมายไทยสื่อความหมายสั่งและอนุญาต งานวิจัยนี้ยังพบประเด็นที่น่าสนใจเพิ่มเติม 2 ประการ ได้แก่ …

Human beings share commonalities, many of which are intricately woven into literature. Literary works allow individuals to explore and gain insights into diverse cultures and ideas across spatiotemporal contexts. Against this backdrop, this study compared two literary works, Oedipus Rex (Sophocles, 1992) and Utenzi wa Nyakiiru Kibi [‘Epic of Nyakiiru-Kibi’] (Mulokozi, 1997), to gain insight into the two societies from which the stories are derived. Using Aarne and Thompson’s (1961) classification of the Oedipus story, the study finds that Utenzi wa Nyakiiru Kibi qualifies as an Oedipal story as it meets several Oedipal narrative motifs in the Oedipus story. Publishing the Pan-Jewish emerges from a question about sites of synthesis between claims of sacred continuity and novel forms of communication. It centers on the first ten years of Hamagid (1856-1866), acknowledged within the historiography as history’s first Hebrew-language newspaper. Eliezer Lipman Silberman, an Orthodox butcher founded Hamagid in East Prussia as a bulwark of his vision of traditional Judaism. The first chapter of this dissertation examines the formal elements of the newspaper as a medium, demonstrating the myriad ways in which it presented novel experiences for its reading public. This study aims to provide insights into the impact of COVID-19 on the Irish Sign Language Interpreting profession in regards workplace wellbeing and occupational health. A two-staged mixed method data collection took place in the form of an anonymous online survey followed by focus groups. This captured work practices throughout the pandemic, the impact it had on Ssign Language Interpreters (SLIs), as well as mechanisms employed regarding wellness and self-care. The results reveal many issues impacting SLIs in Ireland during the COVID-19 pandemic, including drastic decreases in workload, and a forced transition into an online environment.
