Student Works (2020-2029)
Self-compassion is a growing area of research worldwide and has shown promise to be useful in providing insight and intervention against rising mental health issues. Self-compassion has also been linked to psychological well-being as well as negative psychological outcomes, which makes it an ideal measure for mental health. However, the instrument to measure self-compassion has not been comprehensively translated and validated in Malaysia yet. Previous studies are lacking in the psychometric evidence for a valid self-compassion scale in a local context. This study presents the comprehensive translation and validation of the 26-item self-compassion scale (SCS) by Neff (2003) from English …

Translation Of Humour In The English Subtitles Of Two Malaysian Chinese Films, Kah Yee Tu
Student Works (2020-2029)
This study attempts to investigate humour translation in two Malaysian Chinese New Year films: Woohoo! and The Journey. There are two objectives of this study: i) to find out the translation strategies used in subtitling humour into English subtitles, and ii) to analyse whether the humour in the films is effectively translated into English subtitles. This genre-based research examines and compares the rhetorical structures of Malaysia and England and Wales Court of Appeal judgements. This comparative genre study is motivated by a statement by the former Malaysian Judge of the High Court, Dato’ Syed Ahmad Idid and Umar A. Oseni (2011) in a writing guide book that presents a standard model to write legal judgements that can be adapted to all legal jurisdictions across the world. Normativity statements about the dos and don’ts on how to write judgements are valid and essential to the legal practices but this normative approach does not necessarily describe the …
