Critical Geopolitics And The Reconstruction Of Meaning: A Discourse Analysis Of The 'Terrorism' Label Applied To Hamas By Western Hegemony, Cahaya Mulyani Sakti, M.Hamdan Basyar

The emergence of Hamas in 1987 cannot be separated from the configuration of modern colonialism and the continuity of occupation that shaped the political reality. Hamas’s early phase was rooted in socio-religious activities through education and community empowerment programs, before evolving into armed resistance against the occupation. The labeling of Hamas as a “terrorist” organization began in the mid-1990s in U.S. legal documents, which subsequently generated debate and gave rise to counter-narratives. This study employs the frameworks of critical geopolitics (Ó Tuathail & Agnew) and the Discourse-Historical Approach (Wodak) to analyze the labeling of Hamas as “terrorist” by Western hegemony. …

Morocco is confronted with terrorist threats stemming from its strategic geographical position and ongoing geopolitical conflicts, exacerbated by the Salafist movement. In response, the regime has taken measures such as suppressing Islamist groups and integrating them into the political process. King Mohammed VI has adopted a holistic approach, combining security measures, human development, and the promotion of tolerance values to counter terrorism and ensure national stability. These discourses firmly denounce terrorism and jihadism, highlighting their threat to Morocco’s security and cohesion. This article discusses the etymology of lexical doublets in English, approaches of scholars to the development of lexical doublets, their division into semantic groups, their use in languages, in discourse and their functional and semantic aspects. Semantic grouping of lexical doublets from different languages has been explored with examples. In addition, borrowings, formation of vocabulary derived from different languages as lexical doublets, and their structural, semantic, functional and linguocultural features were compared and analyzed for their similarities and differences.

Language is fundamental in shaping our understanding of the world we live, and as such, studies of discourse are invaluable in providing insight into the worldviews of historical actors. Though much has been written on the depiction of colonized peoples and its Oriental undertones, little has been said about the discourse on a colony itself.
