The Narrative In The Algorithm: Storytelling, World Literature, And The Smartphone, Chad Szalkowski-Ference

In this dissertation, I interrogate the role algorithms, artificial intelligence, and smartphone technology play in contemporary world literature. My analysis begins with the post-truth condition, which speaks to the contemporary era’s embrace of alternative facts, authoritarianism, and conspiratorial thinking. I draw on narrative theory and paradigms of world literature to show how “algorithmic reasoning” has led to a state of paranoid persecution. This reasoning has forged new collectivities across traditional borders. Additionally, I show that these new collectivities and new technologies have produced new narrative points of view: the algorithmic first- and third-person, allowing narratives to retain the intimacy and …

This study examines how ideology is constructed in the translation of Indonesian political news headlines into English by ANTARA News Agency. Moving beyond the notion of translation as mere equivalence, it conceptualizes headline translation as a process of discursive recontextualization shaped by institutional practices and audience design. Using a qualitative comparative approach, the study analyses 20 pairs of Indonesian English political headlines. The analysis implied Fairclough’s (1995) three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The dimensional focusing on textual features, discourse practice, and social practice. This article examines how three recent Anglophone novels of early motherhood, namely, Szilvia Molnar’s The Nursery (as Süt Lekesi), Rachel Yoder’s Nightbitch (as Gece Kancığı), and Claire Kilroy’s Soldier Sailor (as Asker ile Denizci), circulate in Turkish translation in a context shaped by pronatalist moral economies. Pairing peritextual analysis (covers, back-cover copy, blurbs, and bio notes) with close readings of selected key scenes of postpartum crisis, feral transformation, and toddler-year burnout, I show how Turkish editions both render and manage maternal negativity: translation choices modulate voice, affect, and register, while peritexts frame these mothers for local readability …

Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1974 novel, The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia features two fictional worlds, Urras and Anarres, with distinct political structures and languages. Anarres is created by the revolutionaries who departed capitalistic Urras to create a new anarchist community, and its language was invented so as to have no word for “property” or “class.” However, the artificial distinction in the languages do not hold up the binary of possession and non-possession in these worlds, as the word “possession” permeates interpersonal relationships even on Anarres. Naomi Sím’s Taiwanese (Tâi-gí) language short story, "Emerald Orchid Love Letter" (Chhùi-Lân ê Chêng-Phoe 翠蘭ê情批) engages deeply with the questions of politics, language and religion in contemporary Taiwan. The plot of the story pivots around the central question of what language the gods speak. In the story, the narrator—caught between Taiwanese, Mandarin and English languages—finds a strange growth on her inside lip. The cure turns out to involve the sea goddess Má-chó͘, and a renewed commitment on the part of the narrator to the Taiwanese language. This monograph explores three main strategies of vocal exotification in Anglophone film: representations of accented speech, inclusion of constructed languages, and non-subtitling of snippets of other languages. Using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding framework, I approach these practices as rhetorical devices that both construct and are constructed by the complexity of our social landscapes. Portrayals of accented speech, constructed languages, and subtitling practices form a gradient of abstraction, where the denotative meaning of words gradually loses importance to the sonic characteristics of the voice. The current study investigates the relationship between noun classes and plant folk taxonomy in Chasu (G 22). The study focuses on two objectives: the first objective is to describe the plant folk taxonomy in Chasu and the second objective is to determine the relationship between noun classes and plant folk taxonomy in Chasu. Data were collected from rural villages in Same and Mwanga districts by using free listing, field interviews (jungle-walk-and-identify), and written texts containing Chasu plant names. This paper examines Walter Benjamin's engagement with the motif of Heim (home) as it interweaves with his intellectual and personal experiences during the early 1920s. Through an analysis of Benjamin’s writings and correspondence, including his plans for the journal Angelus Novus and reflections on his friendship with Fritz Heinle, the study explores Heim as both a real and rhetorical space. Initially conceived as an idealized site of intellectual and spiritual communion, Heim is transformed by personal tragedy and historical crisis into an unattainable, speculative ideal—a rhetorical atopos. Any form of audio-visual media utilises specific stylistic elements in order to represent the reality within which the media form is situated. These representations occur through the language and iconography of the media form, which works on stereotypical features that the audience can easily identify. Forming a pivotal part of the media, these representations must be rendered in the translations for a linguistically and culturally diverse audience. Audio-Visual Translation (AVT) has been used since the 1930s to make media accessible. This research proposes a structural reading of El rincón de los muertos to decode and trace echoes to the khipu which are embedded throughout the novel. Contrary to a graphic writing system, the Incan empire’s khipu (khipu) was a mnemotechnic system—a three-dimensional communicative device, an archive of memory that recorded information using different colored strings, and a system of knots. Our concept of mnemonics is different than that of the indigenous communities who relied on oral tradition and specifically for khipu a khipukamayuq (reader of khipu), in a narrative and discursive manner, to reconstruct the message the khipu contained. …

The Life of Omar ibn Said (1831) is a narrative written by an enslaved person in Arabic and went through multiple English translations over the centuries. This article examines the ways in which these translations involve the nineteenth-century Christian agenda as well as the translators’ decisions in the twentieth-first century that multiply Omar ibn Said’s voice. In response to the recent scholarship’s effort to find Omar’s “true self” in his writings, which shows the meshing of Christian and Islamic faith, I aim to foreground his voice as a powerful presence at the intersections of the two languages and religions. Spanish humanist Pedro Mexía (1497-1551) wrote two highly influential texts in the sixteenth century, the Silva de varia lección (1540) and the Historia imperial y cesárea (1545), which were, notably, written in Spanish, a vernacular language, as opposed to Latin, the academic language of the age. As these books presented previously inaccessible scientific and historical knowledge to the common person, they were soon translated into several languages, achieving widespread fame and influence. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาและหาแนวทางในการแปลคำศัพท์เฉพาะด้านภาพยนตร์ในหนังสือเรื่อง Cinematography: Theory and Practice For Cinematographers and Directors, Third Edition ของ Blain Brown ผู้วิจัยคัดเลือกคำศัพท์ทั้งสิ้น 30 คำ โดยมีสมมติฐานของการวิจัยว่า ในการแปลศัพท์เฉพาะด้านภาพยนตร์ให้สามารถถ่ายทอดความหมายได้ถูกต้องและเหมาะสมนั้น จะต้องใช้กลวิธีการแปลทั้งหมดสองวิธี ได้แก่ 1) แปลแบบตีความโดยใช้คำที่มีอยู่แล้วในภาษาปลายทางและใช้แนวทางบัญญัติศัพท์โดยวิธีทาบเทียบ (Mapping-Matching) ตามแนวทางของสมศีล ฌานวังศะ (ม.ป.ป.) และ 2) แปลแบบถ่ายเสียงพร้อมเติมคำอธิบายสั้น ๆ และใช้แนวทางบัญญัติศัพท์โดยวิธียืมตรง (Direct Borrowing) ตามแนวทางของสมศีล ฌานวังศะ ผลการวิจัยแสดงให้เห็นว่ากลวิธีการแปลเป็นไปตามสมมติฐานคือ (1) แปลแบบตีความโดยใช้คำที่มีอยู่แล้วในภาษาปลายทางและใช้แนวทางบัญญัติศัพท์โดยวิธีทาบเทียบ (Mapping-Matching) ตามแนวทางของสมศีล ฌานวังศะ (ร้อยละ 73.3) และ (2) แปลแบบถ่ายเสียงพร้อมเติมคำอธิบายสั้น ๆ และใช้แนวทางบัญญัติศัพท์โดยวิธียืมตรง (Direct Borrowing) ตามแนวทางของสมศีล ฌานวังศะ (ร้อยละ 26.7) ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับกลวิธีการแปลศัพท์เฉพาะในงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง ได้แก่ งานวิจัยของ วิภาดา เปรมวุฒิ (2533) โอซ่า มาร์คลุนด์ (2011) และทรงวุฒิ บุริมจิตต์ (2550) คือมีการใช้กลวิธีการแปลแบบตรงตัวและแบบไม่ตรงตัว และไม่พบกลวิธีการแปลโดยการแทนที่แนวคิดทางวัฒนธรรมในสังคมของผู้อ่านภาษาปลายทาง

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาศึกษากลวิธีการแปลประโยคอติพจน์จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ในนวนิยายเรื่อง Crazy Rich Asians ของ Kevin Kwan (2513) และฉบับแปลภาษาไทย เหลี่ยมโบตั๋น แปลโดย ศศิ พินทุ์ (2559) รวมถึงปัจจัยทางวัฒนธรรมบางประการที่ส่งผลต่อการแปลอติพจน์จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยได้คัดเลือกประโยคที่ปรากฏการใช้อติพจน์จำนวน 60 ประโยค ตามแนวทางการจำแนกประเภทอติพจน์ของ Claudia Claridge (2011) และใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์แนวทางการแปลความเปรียบและสำนวนภาษา (Trope Change) ของ Andrew Chesterman (2001) จากการจำแนกประเภทอติพจน์ที่ปรากฏในประโยคต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ จำนวน 60 ประโยค พบอติพจน์ในตัวบทต้นฉบับ 6 ประเภท ได้แก่ อติพจน์แบบคำเดียว อติพจน์ระดับวลี อติพจน์ระดับอนุประโยค อติพจน์ที่แสดงจำนวน การเปรียบเทียบขั้นสูงสุด และการใช้การเปรียบเทียบ โดยแบ่งเป็นอติพจน์ประเภทเดียวประโยคจำนวน 53 ประโยค และใช้อติพจน์มากกว่าหนึ่งประเภทร่วมกัน จำนวน 7 ประโยค จากการวิเคราะห์พบว่ากลวิธีที่ผู้แปลเลือกใช้ในการแปลประโยคอติพจน์ที่คัดสรรจำนวน 67 แห่ง มีทั้งหมด 3 กลวิธี ได้แก่ การรักษาอติพจน์หรือใช้สำนวนภาษาประเภทเดิม (55 แห่ง) เปลี่ยนไปใช้อติพจน์หรือสำนวนภาษาประเภทอื่น (3 ครั้ง) และแปลโดยไม่เก็บอติพจน์หรือสำนวนภาษา (9 แห่ง) โดยกลวิธีที่พบมากที่สุดคือ คงความเปรียบหรือสำนวนภาษาประเภทเดิม นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าประเด็นที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเรื่องเพศ เป็นปัจจัยทางวัฒนธรรมที่ส่งผลต่อการแปลอติพจน์จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ซึ่งผู้แปลเลือกใช้กลวิธีการกรองทางวัฒนธรรม (cultural filtering) ควบคู่กับการคงความเปรียบหรือสำนวนภาษาประเภทเดิม โดยใช้คำที่มีความหมายต่างกัน หากแต่ยังมีความเชื่อมโยงกันในแง่ของการสื่อความ จึงทำให้เห็นภาพการเปรียบเทียบไปในทำนองเดียวกันกับต้นฉบับโดยหลีกเลี่ยงการใช้ถ้อยคำที่สื่อความทางเพศอย่างโจ่งแจ้ง เพื่อให้เหมาะสมกับบริบทวัฒนธรรมไทย

แนวทางการแปลข้อความแสดงอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในบทความสารคดีของนิตยสาร National Geographic จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย, สริตา บูรณะสัมฤทธิ

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในตัวบทสารคดีวิทยาศาสตร์จากนิตยสาร National Geographic และกลวิธีการถ่ายทอดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์จากต้นฉบับอังกฤษไปยังฉบับแปลภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยศึกษาแนวคิดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ของ Lakoff และ Johnson (2003) แนวทางการระบุรูปภาษาที่แสดงอุปลักษณ์ของกลุ่ม Pragglejaz Group แนวทางการแปลอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์จากงานวิจัยตัวบทประเภทต่าง ๆ ตลอดจนประเภทอุปลักษณ์ที่พบในตัวบทวิทยาศาสตร์และสารคดี และประยุกต์ใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์กลวิธีการแปลของ Papadoudi (2010) Schäffner (2004) Deignan et al. (1997) และ Toury (1995) ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ผลการวิจัยพบว่า จากข้อมูลอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ที่เก็บจำนวน 126 ตัวอย่าง มีจำนวนรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 114 รูป สามารถจำแนกอุปลักษณ์ที่พบได้ 19 ประเภท เรียงลำดับจากมากที่สุดไปน้อยที่สุด ได้แก่ อุปลักษณ์สงคราม อุปลักษณ์มนุษย์ อุปลักษณ์การเดินทาง อุปลักษณ์เชิงกายภาพ อุปลักษณ์สิ่งมีชีวิต อุปลักษณ์คอมพิวเตอร์ อุปลักษณ์ศิลปะ อุปลักษณ์ธุรกิจ อุปลักษณ์เครื่องนุ่งห่ม อุปลักษณ์สุขภาพ อุปลักษณ์เกม กีฬา และการแข่งขัน อุปลักษณ์ก่อสร้าง อุปลักษณ์เครื่องจักร อุปลักษณ์พืชและการเพาะปลูก อุปลักษณ์เชิงทิศทาง อุปลักษณ์อาหาร อุปลักษณ์สัตว์ อุปลักษณ์ศาสนา และอุปลักษณ์ภัยธรรมชาติ จากการวิเคราะห์ พบว่าอุปลักษณ์ที่พบในภาษาอังกฤษปรากฏในภาษาไทยทุกประเภท ยกเว้นอุปลักษณ์ภัยธรรมชาติ ผลการวิเคราะห์บทแปลแตกต่างไปจากสมมติฐานเดิมที่ตั้งไว้ว่ากลวิธีการแปลที่พบมากสุดคือการแปลอุปลักษณ์โดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิม การแปลอุปลักษณ์โดยใช้มโนทัศน์ที่แตกต่างกัน และการแปลโดยไม่รักษาอุปลักษณ์ ตามลำดับ แต่ผลการวิจัยพบว่ากลวิธีการแปลที่พบมากสุด ได้แก่ 1) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิมและใช้รูปภาษาเหมือนเดิม พบร้อยละ 52.34 2) การแปลโดยไม่รักษาอุปลักษณ์ พบร้อยละ 21.09 3) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิมแต่ใช้รูปภาษาที่ต่างไปจากเดิม พบร้อยละ 10.94 4) การแปลโดยใช้มโนทัศน์ที่ต่างกัน พบร้อยละ 10.16 5) การตัดอุปลักษณ์ในภาษาต้นทางทิ้ง พบร้อยละ 3.91 และ 6) การแปลสิ่งที่ไม่ใช่อุปลักษณ์เป็นอุปลักษณ์ พบร้อยละ 1.56 ทั้งนี้ ไม่พบการเพิ่มอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ลงไปในบทแปล โดยสรุป อุปลักษณ์ในตัวบทสารคดีวิทยาศาสตร์จากภาษาอังกฤษสามารถถ่ายทอดเป็นภาษาไทยได้เป็นส่วนใหญ่โดยไม่มีอุปสรรค โดยอุปลักษณ์แต่ละประเภทสามารถถ่ายทอดได้ผ่านกลวิธีที่แตกต่างกัน …

การแปลภาษาภาพพจน์เปรียบเทียบในหนังสือด้านสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์เชิงปรัชญาการออกแบบ เรื่อง The Eyes Of The Skin: Architecture And The Senses ของ Juhani Pallasmaa, มานิตา บวรกีรติขจร

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการแปลภาษาภาพพจน์เชิงเปรียบเทียบที่มี มโนอุปลักษณ์แฝงอยู่ในงานเขียนด้านปรัชญาการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรม ซึ่งมักปรากฏการใช้คำศัพท์เชิงนามธรรมและภาษาภาพพจน์ (Figurative language) ที่โดดเด่นเพื่อสื่อถึงมโนทัศน์ทางปรัชญา (Philosophical concept) ผู้วิจัยเลือกศึกษาหนังสือ เรื่อง The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses ของ จูฮานิ พาลาสมา (Juhani Pallasmaa) งานเขียนสำคัญในแวดวงสถาปัตยกรรมเชิงทฤษฎีที่มีรากฐานแนวคิดจากปรากฏการณ์วิทยา (Phenomenology) และการตั้งคำถามต่อแนวคิดดวงตาเป็นศูนย์กลางของการรับรู้ (Ocularcentrism) โดยเนื้อหานี้เป็นพื้นฐานสำคัญในการศึกษาการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรม แต่ยังไม่เคยมีการศึกษากลวิธีการแปลหนังสือประเภทนี้อย่างเป็นระบบในบริบทภาษาไทย ในการวิเคราะห์ตัวบท เลือกพิจารณาส่วนที่ 2 (Part 2) จำนวน 34 หน้า พบว่ามีลักษณะของการใช้ภาษาภาพพจน์เปรียบเทียบที่มีมิติของมโนทัศน์ทางปรัชญาแฝงอยู่ โดยเฉพาะมโนทัศน์ที่เป็นมโนอุปลักษณ์ (Conceptual metaphor) เชิงภววิทยา (Ontological metaphor) ซึ่งสะท้อนกรอบความคิดของผู้เขียนที่ได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากปรากฏการณ์วิทยา การแปลเนื้อหาดังกล่าวจึงจำเป็นต้องทำความเข้าใจความหมายแฝงและความหมายเชิงมโนทัศน์ (Connotative and conceptual meaning) เพื่อถ่ายทอดเจตนารมณ์และความลึกซึ้งของต้นฉบับได้อย่างแม่นยำในขั้นตอนการแปล ได้ประยุกต์ใช้แนวทางการแปลแบบตีความ (Interpretive approach) ของ ฌอง เดอลิลส์ (Jean Delisle) ร่วมกับทฤษฎีการตรงประเด็น (Relevance theory) ของ แอ็นสท์ ออกุสท์ กัทท์ (Ernst August Gutt) โดยมุ่งเน้นการแปลด้วยการตีความและการสร้างความหมายที่เทียบเคียงต้นฉบับ (Interpretive resemblance) เพื่อรักษาความหมายเชิงมโนทัศน์ คุณลักษณะของภาษาภาพพจน์ และถ่ายทอดแนวคิดของผู้เขียนให้สอดคล้องกับบริบทภาษาไทย
