The major conclusions in Georgia Warnke's illuminating Essay, Law, Hermeneutics, and Public Debate are persuasive, but some that appear almost self-evident instead rest on controversial evaluative judgments. Many of my comments deal with these complexities, drawing from her book on interpretation and political theory as well as her Essay. Other remarks develop subjects Warnke barely touches. My thoughts are, thus, some combination of clarification, supplementation, and disagreement.

My initial effort is to refine in just what senses interpretations of texts, social practices, and legal rules must speak to our concerns. I next explore how interpretations of legal texts that are …

This thesis will examine Native American oral narratives and determine what influence western culture has had on the written recording of these stories. By examining traditional literature, I will analyze a trickster myth in order to establish Native American literary patterns. I will then examine Henry Schoolcraft's translations of Chippewa oral narratives and determine what is characteristic of Native American oral narratives and what alterations he made in order to market these narratives to an audience deeply entrenched in western literature.

This research sought to identify stylistic guidelines which could be used by the authors and editors of English language texts in order to improve the quality of subsequent machine translations to other languages. A literature review was conducted to provide background information and to determine what guidelines would be appropriate. Nine guidelines were developed on the basis of the review. The guidelines were then tested. They were applied to five paragraphs from a Royal Australian Air Force technical publication by the researcher and an independent volunteer. Increasing Staff Use Of Sign Language, Melanie Hepworth Neville

This study examined the effectiveness of two procedures, a visual cue and performance posting, to modify the use of sign language by psychiatric technicians. The visual cue was first introduced alone, then paired with performance posting to encourage staff use of sign language with the developmentally disabled children in their charge. Application of the visual cue alone produced little change in staff sign useage. The visual cue plus performance posting condition increased staff use of sign language during mealtimes. Four weeks of follow-up data indicated that the use of sign language remained at a level well above baseline.

The same age which produced the great epic, Beowulf, also produced some of the most beautiful, most lyrical, poetry ever written. Scholars who first looked into The Exeter Book Boomed to have been less impressed by this subjective, elegiac poetry than they were by the monumental epic which had already been acclaimed as one of the greatest literary accomplishments of our ancestors. The interest in the lyrics has grown slowly through the years since 1831, when the first transcript vas made of this eleventh century manuscript.
